  • My surround sound test scene.

  • 1:17 thuglife

  • fantastic to watch. Thanks for uploading!!

  • so many retards on this thread its ridiculous.. go read a fucking history book not wikipedia.

  • Viva Cinco de Mayo, Napoleon never defeated Mexico.

  • @Levipf2 napoleon never "attacked" mexico, and why would he attack a country half-way across the world like his idiot nephew?

  • sharpshooters to the tops mr. Howard, the royal marines kicked ass.

  • In reality the ship that they hunted was American, but that would hardly have made the film popular in the world's largest movie market, so they resorted to the old favourites of the French instead.

  • @Nizlopi2 no they never hahahaha the french had almost conquered the world at the time this movie is set, emperor napoleon was the greatist french leader ever to have lived and he almost invaded briton. the ship Acheron was the french ship they chased around south america. it was never an american ship, sorry mate but your just wrong.

  • @DeanMurray08 Of course it's true that Napoleon nearly invaded Britain. In fact, the whole story is fiction:

'The novel provided much of the overall plot-structure for the 2003 Peter Weir film...though the fictional USS Norfolk morphed into the fictional American-built French privateer Acheron...' (Wikipedia)

Having said that, the Acheron (in the film) is based on the historical American ship the USS Constitution, which captured a number of British ships during the War of 1812.

  • This guy are the British not english.

  • i wish they'd make another movie!

  • God save UK !

  • @cyracom

    God save Ireland

  • @Theirishman96

Imagine a world without the classic greece: Pythagoras, Socrates, Democritus, Plato, Aristotle, Alexander the Great and more, included some unknown, after the destruction of the great library of Alexandria. That's the meaning of "god save the U.K." and no more.

Have you seen the classic style public buildings of Washington, USA, and other major capitals of the West (America and Europe)?

That tells you the words: democracy and freedom?

  • @cyracom

yeah the greeks did contribute a lot ..but my definitions of "God save Ireland" is for god ..to ..save ..Ireland....the U.K. doesnt need saving they are a prosperous country. Ireland needs god..they do not need greek architecture and philosophiy

  • This film is not only very well made but describes faithfully that English character, heritage of classical culture: the passion for science and for the competitiveness or sportsmanship, both embodied in the characters of the doctor and captain respectively.

  • One of the greatest war films of all time.

  • 02:20 - total win.

  • Isn't the enemy ship too far away at the beginning of the clip to be firing a broadside? I thought ships were usually within pistol range before firing.

Also, would chunks of the ship be ripped open like that from a faraway broadside? I thought you had to get really close before the hull was damaged that badly.

  • There is a bit of truth to the scenario in this movie. There's a scene where a couple sailors talk of the Acheron being built in Boston.

Lord Nelson once quote....." I see trouble for England in those big Yankee Frigates".....referring to the great strides American shipwrights made in naval technology and hull design. American builders could also afford to use lavish amounts of tough, seasoned oak, where the English builders could not. All this would later be evident in the War of 1812.

  • @Lex5576 the jack aubrey tales have a lot of basis in real history.

  • For the Folks who enjoy this shit (I do) see if you can get hold of Diary Of A Shellback, or, Two years Before The Mast.. Accounts of iife on the sailing ships. Good reads.

  • This week on Fighting Round The World Russell Crowe is going to be fighting Frenchmen, they're angry bastards, but usually surrender pretty quickly

  • Arrh the British were unstoppable :D they could fire three times as fast as the french, even napoleon himself admitte he was a coward on the waves ^^

  • Vive l'Achéron !

    Vive la France :)

  • @Heybuddy06 You know I would love to have a war with you Frenchies, admittedly you are the only ones who can stand up to the Brits back then maybe apart form the Russians or Prussians who had 500,000 men armies, but I would love to have a war with you 19th century style most of you French will be black or Moroccan/Algerian any way let's do it after the recession finishes, I would be honoured to kick your arses.

  • @nounever Yep, but it would be your end. The french army was and is still the best army on land, you are the best on seas. ( I would like it too , but you have to come in France and not hidding on your island like you always did before :D)

  • @Heybuddy06 there wasn't any hiding, most of it was in mainland Europe? dude!¬

  • @nounever Nop, from 1797 to 1807 you were hiding, then you went, but there was no Napoléon, and you fought a very little part of our army, who was already broken by guerrilla. England gave money to Prussia and Russia, Austria to stop us, lots of money, but they always failed ( 7 coalition to stop us, 6 failed )

  • Can anyone offer me a job on a true sailing ship? Cos I'd be away. Drop of a hat.

  • i would have loved to be at the wheel of the acheron!

    mighty and beautiful ship

  • For some reason I find it super epic when theyre dragging their ship. The shreded sails the way the hull is tilted is just so badass. I can see why people give ships names. They are so dependent on their ship, and their ship so dependent on them.

  • Just remember to pick the lesser of two weevils!

  • Why the hell are people making WW2 comments? This film was not set in that period, go watch WW2 clips and spout off about it there...

  • I'd rather root for HMS Surprise but the Acheron packs a hell of a punch. I wonder what build she is? Heavy frigate, like USS constitution? Scared the shitz out of me when I frist saw this film, the sound of the guns are so realistic....

    "Broadside incoming, hit the deck!!"

    boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-ba-boom-boom-boom-boom!

I love the sound of a clean, rolling broadside.

  • @DarthUltronicus Actually that is the sound of real guns firing. They also used live ammunition for this movie to get the sound of flying cannon balls right.

  • @Daedalus94 So as far as using real cannons, were the guns on both ships real or props?

  • @DarthUltronicus The Acheron and everything in and on it are CGI based on the USS Constitution. The HMS Surprise is both CGI, scale model and a real ship with real guns. The sounds for the Acherons guns is from real guns.

  • @Daedalus94 Question, is it illegal for a citizen to own a sailing ship (replica) that they had built/purchased, if it in-fact has real cannons aboard? What I mean is, are the cannons allowed on a civillian ship, or is that against the law?

If anyone else would like to answer this, feel free to do so. Thanks =)

  • @DarthUltronicus I am not really the right person to answer that question as I am not from the US. Here in Norway it`s illegal to own cannons, at least working cannons. I do believe it would be the same in the US.

  • @Daedalus94 In that case, If i had cannons that were replicas but not working (literally), would they let me? As long as I proved they can't do anything but roll on wheels?

  • @DarthUltronicus I do believe that is a possibility. The only way to be sure is to test the theory. As I said I am not the best person to ask those kinda questions.

  • @Daedalus94 Well, guess I better start saving up, lol.

  • @DarthUltronicus You can carry weapons on a ship, you can buy cannons very legally. At the Ft. Moultrie Reenactment in Charleston in April 2011, there was a mock pirate ship that carried cannons and fired upon Fort Sumter.

  • i forgot how amazing this move is man holy shit

  • As proud as i am of my glorious country England, i can not help but point out to @jimbob29uk that Britain did not stand alone against Hitler but many others laid down their lives in ending Hitler and his Nazi regime and we must be modest as a nation and remember those other country's that fought and suffered for the freedom . RULE BRITANNIA

  • Peter Weir and Crowe-what a match! Did you ever not believe Crowe as that Commander: Pull for Lucky Jack.

  • What pisses me of in the face of an otherwise GREAT movie, is the fact that Holumn is seen here to holf his gun crews in check, and is the 1st officer under fire to remind the men to "hold you possitions",Yet, later he is accused of all manner of foul behavior.

I susspect all of that BS talk just B4 his death would have been easily dealt with at the simple mention of his sturdy leadership when the surprise 1st came under fire...

I think less of the men in this story for thier turning in him.

  • @popceed More to it in the series, if it makes you feel better. In "The Far Side of the World" Hollom's character carries on an illicit, but very public, affair with the then gunner's wife. Although the crew aren't concerned with the immorality of the act, there is worry that in combination with certain other conditions it would bring ill luck on the ship. For simplicity, this was left out of the film. Instead we have the heroic fatalism in his suicide, which doesn't happen in the book.

  • My friend at the top, it is the same reason that I love Das Boot with subtittles, its a wonderful submersion to have the movie spoken in the language of the hero, right or wrong...

  • This is not much of a battle more like a English ship surprise attacked and just trying to narrowly escape.

  • @fatboy537 Surprise attack, no pun intended hardy hardy har

  • Amazing to think that Britain stood alone against Napoleon and Hitler and still stands proud. We have lost our world power but our spirit remains the same. Rule Britania!

  • the dominant and econoically powerful era's for counties were probably the 16th and 17th centuary's were spain's, the 18th centuary was both france and Britain's, the 19th centuary was Britains Centuary after this movies war overcoming france, the 20th has been the USA's, the 21st will probably be China's. by the way Great Movie :)

  • In the sense of the ship battle and land battle-at least you could run away from a land battle: think Monty python's "run away!"

  • ahahaha God sakes don't drop anything then boom they drop everything xD

  • French focused on the land, england focused on the sea. good choice England

  • on a ship absolutely no place was safe. at least on a battlefield it's a whole field for a cannonball to choose where to hit

  • Wooden Ships and Iron Men!

  • This is when Britain was a glorious nation. Now it's a club of pakis, blacks and alcoholics, in whose capital, London, you can't exactly tell in what country you are. All, and I mean all, for absolutely nothing.

  • @Forset1 ur a racist

  • @bh5496 And Britain is today a joke compared to what it once was. I'm not british, by the way.

  • @Forset1 I agree, Britain was the top dog back then along with France

  • @Forset1 The Brits will STILL kick the living shit out of most countries; with or without our help. They have a powerful surface fleet, submarine fleet, Marine Corps, Army - including SAS. Ask Argentina! (What a fucking joke that was.)

  • The poor old Surprise really took a beating that day.

  • Anyone with a heavy bass surround sound needs to watch this movie... It is awesome...

  • And to humble the guys still blowing hot air about Britishness two hundred years back, let's remember that many of the British navy's best sailing ships were in fact French and Spanish captures (the HMS Surprise is, in the novels, and was, in reality, a French ship). That's what's great about that period, each power had something great to offer. Wouldn't be fun to watch otherwise. Cheers.

  • @niclasjt

It's not the weapon, it's the soldier who wields it. Any weapon, no matter how powerful, would be useless in the most incompetent hands.

  • reload and give them hell!!!!!

  • 2:23 is epic!!!

  • i love how jack keeps his cool giving orders when hes up against a ship 3 times bigger

  • a brilliant battle, but i hardly find it fair, look at the french ship, long range 18 ponders, 2 ft thick hulls (penetrable only at super close range) fast as hell, 20 gun batteries, and look at the english, thin hulls, crap short range cannons, 2 times smaller, slow and well,

  • @tiagandremo but they won didnt they?

  • @lobster9207 goes to show that its not size that matters

  • In the end of the movie, the Captain prays the Lord's prayer, and he says, "...Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven..."

    But what it actually says in the King James Version (KJV) of the Holy Bible is this;

"...Thy will be done IN earth, as it is in heaven..."

It seems to me, they had a much more 'holistic' view of the Earth then, and I get the impression that when they wrote this to read 'in earth', they were actually including the sky and the sea as well as the land; the whole planet.

  • This British were always known for taking the first hit from their opponents, and then going in and completely kicking ass. I am not British, I completely acknowledge that they were the best sailors and had the most powerful navy, and naval masterminds, who ever lived.

  • @TheJamesDun yeah but they had alot of foreign people in the navy aswell, technacly they were the ones risking their necs agaisnt cannon fire and all sorts, alot of the sailors were from all over the world, french, spanish, portuguese, italian, all over, so they cant say they were the best because british history is multicultural,

  • never trust the french

  • haha great movie. i wonder if they were really that polite. liek they just got hit and hes like "mr. hollar damage report if u please. haha great mannars

  • @jakethesnakee93 yes, they are that polite, they are British. Freaking out and overdramatising is left to the americans. We can be in the gravest situation but maintain our stiff upper lip.

  • @trigga1uk Don't be so quick to judge all of America. The Yankees are the over dramatising and freaking out bunch, the Rebels--the soldiers who fought for the Confederate States of America, where a whole different story.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheJamesDun Over dramatizing and freaking out? I thought we were on the same side, but since we aren't, I'll point some things out: It was the Yankees that won the Revolutionary war; built five of the six original frigates for the war of 1812, including Constitution, which defeated FIVE British ships; oh and went ahead and won that Civil War those rebels you mention started. All while avoiding slavery -- go figure. Seems to me that perhaps freaking out has its uses, when properly directed.

  • @niclasjt

Of course a little emotion doesnt hurt and americans have nothing to be ashamed of in their navy, but if all the british in this movie calling eachother by Mr., and saying please and thankyou doesnt make you smile theres something wrong with you

  • @niclasjt To correct you, the best ships in the Royal Navy were ships of the line, none too many being foreign ill tell you. Where do you think those sailors manning the Constitution had come from exactly? You certainly need your americanness humbling lol

  • @stig781 Right, but I'm talking the best sailers, meaning the ships that actually 'sailed' well, typically frigates. Ships of the line were notoriously poor sailers, despite their power. But you're right about the sailors themselves: many of them, if not English, learned their trade in the Royal Navy. Impressment was a hell of a thing.

  • @niclasjt Quite right.

  • @stig781 To correct you, many RN ships were Dutch and French built. Taking rather than burning was encouraged hence Prize money for crews if a ship was sold back into the service. The Surprise is itself French built in the books you haven't read.

  • @trigga1uk Sure helps when you're losing a Raj and some colonies.

  • @jakethesnakee93 lol now all they need to say is FIRE!!!please!!!

  • For me, Master and Commander is an outstanding movie!

I love tall ships and this movie is like a dream for me

I also really like the english-version of the movie, because I´m German and I like the atmosphere if there is an English Frigat with English Crew and also English speakers^^

    Thanks for uploading the Vid!!!

  • well said!

  • I agree. Movies should never be dubbed; sub-titles are enough.

  • @myena33 absolutely true. dubbed movies are garbage

  • @Kerensky91 hahaha same, if it was a french crew I would absolutely have to watch it in french with subtitles lol
