Mew won't cause ANY problems because the devs themselves put it into the game. It was just only catchable "legally" during an event (which is not available anymore of course)

I remember encountering mew in the same cave where mewtwo is at in one of the versions. He comes out as a wild pokemon every 40 minutes or so of searching and is at a high level. without any cheats or glitches.

I should be more specific: the rule was that anything you did in-game that didn't alter the ROM itself was considered fair-game. This was after someone kamikaze'd their red version to destroy someone else's cart with an M'... it might've been after the 2nd gen came out and there were even more dangerous glitch pokés that could more easily destroy carts, but I don't remember exactly... it was forever ago~

Glitching is always fair, so long as it's equal to all players (See: CvSNK2 Roll-Cancel)

For example, this mew he caught? totally allowed into a competition, regardless of which of the three groups were hosting it.

@Dragongod41 it's actually based on your last-fight's special stat, so if you use a poké with a special stat of 28, let a ditto transform into it, kill the ditto, it's the same effect as killing the slowpoke. Alternatively, any poké with a special stat of 28 will give it to you, there's a couple trainers who's last poké has such a stat, but since stats in the wild are random, it's effectively guess and check if you're using random pokés

I don't know why people keep bitching about this. Too unbelievable to be a working cheat? Well, IT WORKS, try it yourselves! And unlike Missingno, Mew does NOT screw up your game because Mew is an existing pokemon.

There is a explanation of the cheat mechanics in sites like Bulbapedia, search for "Mew glitch".

As a matter of fact, when the game was released, some players triggered this cheat by accident and saw Mew. That is the reason why Nintendo had to admit Mew's existence.

I think this was prior to the worldwide release and happened only in japanese versions, that's why we westerners discovered Mew later, with the "glitch" now being a cheat.

The title says "Mew Glitch" but honestly by Nintendos idea they implemented a 151st Pokemon in the Game as a Secret and only those who had played the game long enough to get really good at it and know alot about the Pokemon in the game just might have gotten their chance to be doing the never ending Event thats in all the first Versions

You can catch other pokemon using this technique. Like if you fly away at the beginning of a different battle and then fight someone else you might end up with a Hypno or something. It was done on purpose, the person who discovered it was probably looking at the code and saw some weird lines of script. Missingno was a glitch however, I think it has something to due with them canceling a pokemon at the last second and instead of going back and editing the code they just took a short cut.

@maxk880 i don't think so. i've read some stuff about this, and it is a glitch. when that guy sees you next to lavender town, and than you fly away, some process get's interupted. When you return later on to the route, the game will try to resume the fight, but this will go wrong and result in a wild battle. The species of the pokémon will depend on a piece of memory-code from a previous battle. When you have battled that slowpoke, that piece of memory code will result in a mew.

Growl at the Slowpoke six times. It will make the Mew level 1. Then put Mew first in your party, and walk around in the grass that has low level wild pokemon. The greass before Cerulean works fine. Then, while in battle, swap out Mew for a different pokemon. Win the battle. Mew should rise to level 100.

even better is the one in the grass on route 25, get a Mew early in the game and win easy. Even better, if you fight other trainers then you get other pokemon. (I have 150 without having to trade). Just keep repel on hand in case you have to walk through grass, the glitch is based on the pokemon you meet, even random wild ones.
