I own this video and Richard Schmid's "November" video. The "November" video has a really strange ending. He has four people asking phony questions. They look like groupies. I would rather see him doing more painting than let these people ask prepared questions and snicker at him.
Consummate skill. This guy could be represented in every art museum. In Britian all the modern stuff we ever get is ex-public schoolboy mediocrity, or the latest pop art '/ironic' fads....
Quite a poseur. All affectation, and little substance. Watching him paint this series of flicks and flecks reveals this artist's thought process while working, and it is shallow indeed. He misses the bigger picture while trying to impress an audience with whimsical hand movements.
Could someone please explain what he sees in that randomness? he does completely random strokes there.. I'd like to do that too - but i just can't paint what i DONT see.. I see tight, defined clear grass or flowers, but he sees random mass of green shades.
@YTDekus Squint, look for the patterns within the clearly defined shapes, invent new masses and shapes, it is not about painting what you see, it is about inventing a painting that expresses the mood or beauty you are striving for 'using' what you see before you. It is about finding that one true shape that expresses 'grass' better than painting tens of thousands of strands of grass. Mostly though it is about inventing beauty, not grass!
@YTDekus I think Schmid would frown uncomfortably if you told him he was a direct painter, or any genre for that matter, I don't recall reading in any of his books of him saying he was anything in particular, just a painter who uses the tools he has [mental and physical] to express emotion, movement etc. I may be wrong, but I think it is evident if you look at the photo and the painting that he does not just paint what he sees. That said, seeing is an abstract term. So perhaps he does!
@kuentai Thank you for answering. I hope this will free me from always trying to render every single leaf and grass strand.. its so annoying. I must learn not to draw what i actually see..
I own every DVD this man has made. Each one is inspirational. You cannot go wrong buying any of them if you are interested in becoming a better painter.
I would love to see the beggining stages of the painting. I asume naively that he started from plein air. It was very "interesting" to see all the multimedia he uses as reference though, it surprised me.
One has to love an artist who focuses on the positive and beautiful things rather than the ugly and horrible things in the world. Personally i am tired of all the "political" paintings. Schmid is one of my favorite painters, and his skill is only matched by the older masters (John Singer Sergeant, and Sorolla etc.).
I couldn't afford a DVD and bought the book, "Everything..." by Mr Schmid and have enjoyed it immensely for over a year, now, still learning from it by trying his methods and teachings. If I could afford a disc, I would buy as many as I could.
well, it looks easy and almost monochromatic in some pantings. but generalize his work in that way (that a kid could do it better) sounds like an insult to me.
im not a fan or something, i didn't purchase any articles related to him. but after seeing his landscapes on his homepage and in the internet, i am amazed by them.
well yeah, it might sound like an insult, but seriously, im really not trying to, just using the commonsense, if you go to some gallerias (even the smallest) you will see works 10 times better (unless ofcourse its "abstract"), and yeah the snow painting in his website is extremely beautiful, too bad his other works not near as good as the snow landscape/house.
The fact he makes it look like "doodling" shows what a great artist he is....... Go look at a few impressionists and their doodles. Richard is a wonderful artist.
Funny how Smidt sounds like sh*t....just like the painting. Might have liked it more if the guy was a bit more humble instead of being up his own ass.
I was told by an artist student friend of mine- if you only buy one book buy Richard Schmidt-which I did - at great expense - but worth every penny.
So enjoyed this clip - and in reading the book, not only is it very easy to understand and enjoy, but one gets a true feeling of what a nice gentle man this is.
Thank you - and if any videos are forthcoming - I would certainly appreciate knowing about them
He has the the most incredibly sensitive eye. He is a painting genius. I stare in awe at his work. I love being able to hear how he thinks about temperature and creating interest in a painting. Thank you for sharing this.
- spoken without an ounce of arrogance - and handled every bit as deftly as his paintbrush. Did you notice the eloquence of his hand posture while painting, and also while talking? To me the greatest inspiration I draw from his character (daily) is not just to paint alla prima - but to live alla prima in every moment. Cheesy, but true :)
This artist is an utter genius. Who else can handle paint like he does and talk intelligently all the while? Schmid has been an inspiration and mentor for many of today's best. His videos and books are great. Wish your audio was better on this, but I assume you did this without permission? If you really want to put up something of better quality you might contact him or West Wind. And all of you hoping to get a lesson without buying a video...Support your favorite artist!
Richard Schimd has been one of my great mentor for a very long time this is my first time watch his demo.i only read about his working step on international artist magazine and American artist mag. i love his work to the extreme. thanks to you schmid.
