As a musician.. and a fan of many types of music, I can tell you that "mastering" an instrument has nothing to do with writing amazing music and/or being an artist. I can also tell you that for many people, the more you "master" an instrument, the harder it is to write from the soul, because you have too much theory in your head to be creative and spontaneous... many of the greatest musicians learned by ear and nothing else. Also, many of the "simplest" songs are the most profound.
