Actually, I think you'll find that it was the "Give 'em enough rope tour" . The album was released in November 1978 and I remember seeing them at the Music Machine in Camden. That must have been very late 78 or early '79 because I remember getting the album the day it was released, when I was at Uni in Leeds.

This is a wonderful song, which I've said before. Quintessially English, based on English values, which alas, are fast fading. As Blitzkriegpunk said earlier, The Clash encompassed all that was good about the punk movement, the raw excitement is evident in every Clash performance. I don't think Billie Joe and Green Day are keeping the Clash legacy going at all. Green Day is a Pop-Punk band, which has grown to be a much different genre that doesn't really share the same foundation as classic punk such as this.

I think the hate comes from Billie Joe acting like he's the same as this, but it's clear he can't hold a candle to it. Unfortunately, most kids these days are missing out because they don't really know what real punk is or who The Clash really were.

What I meant was that Green Day will do Clash songs, and talk about them alot of the time. And for kids who have never heard of The Clash, they'll probably be like, oh hey, lets go check them out.

I'm 17 and Green Day got me into punk and by citing one of their influences as the Clash they got me to delve into old fashioned english punk, which I now love and I recently bought one of the Clash's albums. In the later years Green Day have really changed their tone into a more pop-punk sound but their older stuff is excellent.

Who else other than Mick Jones could arrange this old chestnut into a rock and roll classic? Strummer took this song into the stratosphere with this performance. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" is so undervalued by Clash fans. I still love the album, warts and all. The live versions of the songs are fantastic. Sandy Pearlman did what he wanted, but the songs were better than he was at the controls.
