Brings back high school days, and remember all the school dances, and "hops" we used to call "sock hops" dancing in your socks. Easier to slide around and lots of fun. Young people should be exposed to this rock an roll, and blues-based music, because even in the 50"s at all these rock and roll school dances, everyone will remember we had at least one CHARLESTON dance from the 20's 30's. All young people now say "say what?"
It's funny how an older black guy managed to put out hit songs which embodied the concerns of white teenage kids. This song still rings true, even today.
Not accidental. Berry was drawing on stock imagery from slave culture, which he inherited from the blues, e.g. the long hard work day followed by dancing and singing at night, the harsh task-master, stock phrases like "lay your burden down," etc. There is a real, if trivial, experiential resonance there, so he's playing on that tradition in a humorous way. It's a very clever song on that level, almost certainly missed by almost every one of those high kids for whom it rang such a resonant note.
Chuck Berry; Born 10/18/26 in St. Louis, Mo. Singer/songwriter/guitarist. Appeared in several movies. Won Grammy's Lifetime Achievment Award in 1984. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Movie documentary/concert tribute to Berry, HAIL!, HAIL! ROCK "N" ROLL, released in 1987.
Whats the deal with the "Old Phonograph Player"? those were antiques long before RocknRoll. Unless it just adding effects to the visuals, it sure tears up those records. But have it...
Yeah, Chuck deserves better.. 'Hi-Fi' was the way we heard that one. Besides.. listen to the lyrics when Chuck says: .. 'hail hail rock & roll.. deliver us from the DAYS OF OLD..!!
Ye, i see whatcha mean, civil rights had not arrived when the phonograph was around. is a interesting effect though, untill a younger generation stops and thinks how far back Rock goes!! Hahaha!!
no man has had so much influence on rock 'n roll as Chuck Berry... he was the idol of all the 4 beatles, and the rolling stones, queens of the stoneage etc. are still influenced by em

Absolutely - the white men "created" a white jesus and a white rock star. Both have been black, Baby! : ) I´m white (just to avoid discussions about rassism)
What qualifies musical criticism? Is this a merit by intellectual understanding? Should we all then step aside and leave the esthetic interpretations of music and art to Schopenhauer and existentialists?
C.Berry surely didn't write that garbage, nor did B. Holley, or E.Cochran. Wonder what textbook & in what b.s.jazz-guitar "degree" program(lol)it came from? Ignorant AND a plagiarist. No Elvis, no Berry, no Holley, no Beatles, no AC/DC...
brings back good memories

It's too bad all teachers who were teachers back then are either dead or retired, it just shows our decay as a society.

Amazing, true Rock n' Roll. I had heard the AC/DC version of this song and loved it, found out Chuck made it first, magically classic.

Public Enemy can say something like that about Elvis, but you, white-bread, head-band-face "killa", and the Dutch-moron below, cannot.
