this weekend i was firing an anagama kiln with nils lou out here in oregon and i was looking in his shed full of pottery and found a whole assortment of pots that your brother had given him! i thought it was way cool cuz ive never actually seen them in person!
I went to the open day at Muchelney and John Leach threw a plate and then got interupted before we saw how he would get it off the wheel head. I look at leachpots today and what do I see!!! Uncanny!
Fabilous! Thanks so very much for Mucheiney Pottery and Johnny he's truly amazing!!! Those plates seem to be so easy, until I try it! ;-) And forget picking it up like that I ruin even the easiest pot. Thanks so much! Have a great day! Karen in CT
He makes that look WAY to easy! Rapidac picked up on that subtle splash of water on the wheel head before he slid the plated onto it. It's those little things that are done so naturally that they are never pointed out. I have picked up several things like that on Simon's videos. Now if we could watch them in slow motion, we could probably pick up even more hints.
But Johnny only lifted after he applied a liberal amount of water to slide the plate off the wheelhead. The plate distorted for a moment but went right back to its correct form.
Was it you who sent me the DVD as there was nothing in to say who it was from ? ...is it Andrew or Stuart ? sorry confused potter here ! Let me know so i can write to you properly .cheers SL
Having a thick base for a foot adds strength for being able to take if off the wheel—and not doing it too slowly.

I'm going to try pushing out my plates this way, I'm not ready to pick them up this way yet.
Thanks

Wow, I have never seen anyone lift a plate like that. Gutsy. I try almost everything I see in your videos but that one is scary. Someday soon . . .

Thank you,
Simon for taking us to Muchelney again!
I so love to watch John throw and work with such ease. Practice makes perfect
plates! I would think they'd warp terriably?
Thanks John, for putting up with us!
Hugs

Hmmm. Now I intrigued.
I generally like to splash a little water down on the far portion of the wheel head, behind the pot.
Then I saw on some slip or other that they were bing mindful not to unsweep any water with they cut off.
So. Is it ok to get a little water under the pot?

Plates without bats - awesome. I'll have to try this. I'm also in awe of how quickly he made them. He's been at it for a wile.

agree also, if I lifted a plate off that way it would be ruined, think it has alot to do with the clay we use. thanks Simon

It amazes me how the plates retain their shape after being lifted. I would love to have seen more of Johnny's throwing of plates.
