This is why I read the scripture out loud in public. As you will noticed, when the street minister quoted John 1:1 the other person didn't let him finish the quote.
I have to deal with other religous people who come along with their scripts of persuasion, such as Jehovah Witness and so forth. I have a few scriptures that I read to them as they pass by. Same thing with the muslims and others. John 3:16 usually mess them up.
People need to read or they will end up following strange doctrine.

Stop misquoting the scripture. He's using it as an example of grace that was to come. Read further on and he says he will have mercy whom he choses to have mercy on. Meaning both Jew and Gentile alike. God says he is God of both Jew and Gentile in Romans 3:28-29.
