  • I think people need to stop caring about what orientation can play what roles and just focus on how that actor him/herself is doing for that role...

If you can play the role, it doesn't matter if you are gay or straight...you are a good actor! :D

  • Neil Patrick Harris and Jim Parsons

  • Kelsey Grammer is an avowed straight actor playing the straight role of Frasier Crane, yet I find him often unconvincing acting as a heterosexual, womanizing character in the series. According to Ramin Setoodeh's logic, I should then take this example and generalize that all straight actors can't play straight roles.

  • A straight man can fake a gay man's "lisp" and girlish mannerism, but a gay man cannot realistically fake the butchness of a manly man. Just look at all the straight-acting queens: does anyone take more than 3 seconds to tell that they are gay? Gays have feminine characteristics that they can't hide no matter how much they try. A gay guy with short hair, a leather jacket and a a motorcycle still looks gay, and a straight guy with long hair and a pink shirt still seems straight.

  • I think How I Met Your Mother is FUNNIER now that I know he's gay. Every time he says something really really REALLY hetero, I chuckle.

But then when he looks longingly at Robin, I forget!~

  • Neil Patrick Harris, Zachary Quinto, Ian McKellen, Peter O'Toole...

  • ah! this video. i don't know why i watched it.. actually i do. i wanted to see how ramin defends himself. he's so awful. he's put his foot in his mouth and can't just stop. it's like dude. just stop. total douchebag.

  • his argument is just so weak its embarrasing

  • the author is gay himself...so he isn't being homophobic

  • @xadam2dudex just ignorant! nice.

  • It depends on the actor , but I also don't really know many actors who were able to pull it of . NPH ? No sorry , he plays an over the top character and that's it . TR Knight became totally asexual while trying to play straight . Right now the only actors who pull it of are Matt Bomer on White Collar and Alan Cummings on The Good Wife

  • why not? greta garbo did, so did rock hudson.

  • DR HORRIBLE ANYONE? I fell in love with him and i KNEW he was gay.

  • Blah blah blah! I didn't care about anything that wasn't coming out of Dan Savage's mouth.

  • whoever says gay guys can't act straight is an idiot. most gay people act straight until they come out of the closet, and they're quite convincing

  • The writer's a dipshit. NPH was never straight, he just didn't let anyone in on it.

  • George Clooney's been doing it for years. Neil Patrick Harris, much?

  • Ramin's father played the role of a straight man for years.....long enough to convince himself that hes strait too..moron

  • Amanda Bearse is on point about NPH! she's sharp

  • Neil Patrick Harris sure as hell can play a straight guy

  • I guess I'm a little surprised that not one person has mentioned the George Clooney reference. I have thought he was gay forever. Apparently people in Hollywood do too.

  • a homophobic muslim. what a shock.

  • @QueerSwede1 if you weren't aware the write IS a homosexual himself. And no Neil Patrick Harris isn't believable in a straight role once he came out of the closet.

  • oh Raminjoon, you are pretty, but I gotta say, you fuck this one out!

  • Whether you're gay or straight, an actor needs to bring a blank persona to the stage/screen so only the character being played is seen. Otherwise, the character isn't believable. People who knew Elizabeth Taylor had eight marriages and virtually lived in the tabloids would have a hard time accepting her playing a nun. If you want to fantasize about an actor, rock star, whatever, it's not a great idea to google everything about their personal life. That's WHY it's called a personal life.

  • WHAT A STUPID, STUPID DISCUSSION!!!!!!

Mr What-ever-name obviously needs to create some controversy in order to.... well, let's see, ... to sell more? To be known? To be on youtube?....Waist of bloody time... to make an argument about something what is not a problem.....

  • Just think about Neil Patrick Harrison. He's AWESOME.

    AND LEGENDARY ;)

  • @shehasnotime135 totally agree I really can't see anyone being as epic as he is!

  • how bout the guy from Star trek!...ughh and the person that played professor X(too lazy to google)

  • yeah after the first episode I had a huge crush on Jonathan Groff and I didn't even know he was gay. I think the character Jesse is very extreme to a point where he might seem gay,but I don't think that's Jonathan's problem I think its the way his character is. Jon had no problem playing straight in Spring Awakening which he got nominated for a tony

  • "Hugh Jackman goes back and forth... maybe it's because he's Australian; it's easier." I laughed at first, but from what I've seen it's actually kind of true.

  • Of course gay-people can play straight!

  • straight playing straight, straight playing gay, gay playing gay, gay playing straight, implied-straight gay playing straight, closeted gay playing gay? it's all feasible

  • That guy is bullshit... I didn't even know Jonathan Groff was gay when I watched the show. I wouldn't have guessed.

  • @Lilynettemiel: Holy...He's gay? I'm a huge ass fan and even I didn't know that.

  • wtf straight actors can play gay roles watch queer as folk half the actors and actresses are straight

  • he referred to 'broke back mt'....? seriously... no offense but those actors didn't convince me at all at being 'gay'. Then he claims his statement was not 'homophobic' yet he refers to actors from glee (i hate that show btw) as being 'queeny'....come on dude...give me a frickin' break =/

  • Anthony Perkins from Psycho was gay, though he married a woman and had children he was a gay man. Norman clearly was a pervert who lusted after women badly. So it is possible.

  • waitwaitwait... Did I just hear him say "When he was straight" ?????

Excuse me? when you THOUGH he was straight. I mean, really.

  • @almightyshortme naw he was straight and then he fuckin decide to be gay. i hate you NPH.

  • @startintolovemyself So you hate him because he's gay?

  • @startintolovemyself no i hate him because he sucks. his acting is terrible and because he is gay.

  • @startintolovemyself you disgust me

  • @cookiechomp you also disgust me

  • Okay. I'm a lesbian and I would still have sex with NPH! In theory. To say that women don't find NPH attractive is silly.

  • NPH!

    That is all.

  • 3 letters: NPH!!!!!!!

  • Rock Hudson played straight parts for YEARS. Maybe it's just that Sean Hays can't play straight.

  • These gays shit on their life LOL! There are plenty of great LGBT actors out there and they go un recognized cuz a st8 person just makes us ALL over the top on tv... Thats not acting. Kiss the same sex and make me believe it. Not a peck, make me believe it's love. Once all str8 person can do that. Then I'll say they can do both. See i can group ppl too.

  • Is he retarded? I think he might be...Gays can't play straight, ha! Let me give you three words retard. Neil Patrick Harris

  • Ramin, u r stupid!!!!!

U r forcin gay actors 2 stay in closet!!!

    U r a fucking homophob!

  • ''maybe it's 'cos he's Australian it's easier''

    What does that mean?

  • jesse from glee is straight on the show and gay in real life

  • Amanda Bearse annoyed me throughout this whole interview. She chose to interpret the article in the way that she did so she could trumpet the point she wanted to make, and missed the point.

  • @AdIgnorantiam I thought so too

  • if theyre talented. (aka neil patrick harris) yeah.

but yeah, there are less gay people in general, which kind of limits the talent spectrum. this guy is an idiot.

  • if theyre talented. (aka neil patrick harris) yeah.

  • Jonathan Groff isn't "queenie" for Heaven's sake. He's hot.

And I'll take him snogging a girl (or a boy) over Tom Cruise kissing anyone. Every time Cruise kisses someone on screen I get the feeling that he's as passionate towards them as he is towards a refrigerator.

  • One name completely proves that man's article wrong. NEIL PATRICK HARRIS! xD Hell he not only plays straight, he plays a WHORE

  • @Selendomono excuse my french, but what he plays is a pussy hound

  • Ramin is all over the place. He's, on the one hand, trying to do damage control, and then at the same time, he's digging himself into a bigger and deeper hole. He doesn't seem too bright.

  • How is he homophobic ha ha he's gay right???

  • I don't understand the purpose of this argument....

  • What about Neil Patrick Harris.....

  • I think they really wanted to use Tom Cruise as an example but didn't want to be sued

  • Ramin Setoodeh is himself a closet gay, Hah! He didn't know which way to turn and try to talk himself out of it after the storm of protest he caused. stupid, sorry man.

  • lol gay actors can play straight roles. they just cant be really fem. If htey are regular guys they can play any role, same as fem women. its just hard for fem guys and butch women to play straight roles. god that guys is stupid

  • he doesnt realise he is a homophobe

  • Wow . . . that Ramin . . . I really feel like he's back-tracking here. I don't really think what he's saying here and what he wrote line up very well. :|

  • @Kenzo0190 Those aren't your words when he's hitting that ass of yours hummmmm.

  • @Kenzo0190 Those aren't your words when he's hitting that ass of yours hummmmm.

  • look at clint walker, he's gay and played Cowboy tough macho guys.

  • what a dumb ass topic its called acting:pretending to be something that you are not.

  • The guy that wrote the article makes my gaydar go to level 10. haha

    He's a faggg.

  • The issue is not accepting gay playing straight, it's Hollywood finally growing up and allowing actors to be out, in which case the whole issue of who is and isn't straight would go away and actors would be judged on their ability and not their sexuality.

  • the new actor in 30 rock..!

  • no one carez about gayz

  • I feel that Ramin (did he say he was a memember of the Gay Community?) is an ass. By force, people have had to closet themselves for centuries, and are masters at it (sadly due to bigoted people in the audience). BUT he's an ass because he says straights can play Gay characters but not vice-versa... or at least he strongly implies this. It also bothers me that because he's Gay himself, folks in this bit only banter with him, and there's a lot of forgiveness for a bigot, albeit a Gay one.

  • Neil Patrick Harris makes that show hes on funny because hes gay and playing this straight guy who just wants to get laid lol. The guy whos talking about this is gay...

  • What about Neil Patrick Harris? Yes, folks. Doogie Howser is gay too. :)

  • ridiculous statement, stupid man

  • Comment removed

  • Everything this guy said on this interview was completely controversal to his article!! He was too defensive when he realized he really didn't have a point, all he only had a few people as base of his theory and he generalized!!

  • Like many people, I also didn't know Jonathan Groff was gay until I read this guy's article, so his argument that Groff is too blatantly "queeny" to play a straight character seems to fall flat. And Amanda Bearse is right, Neel Patrick Harris was never "in the closet". Just because you haven't broadcast to the world that you're gay doesn't mean that you're passing yourself off as a straight person.

  • u kno what why are people so fixed on this topic it seem like str8 people more interested in it then the actual Gays.. lolsz People get over it cuz it aint going no where and so what if those actors gay and play str8 its they choice i do agree w/ da image statement where is if u were openly gay alot of times you wont be casted or even be able to do what u want but u have 2 realize there is a time and place for everything the best bet is 2 be ur self at the end of the day!!

  • @phatboi973 It's being brought up by gay people. The writer of this piece is gay and he was trying to point out a conclusion he had in hopes to change it. He failed, but that's why you keep hearing about it.

I'm assuming by your user name that you're gay. Are you telling me that you don't want to be equal? That is why we fight in congress, hollywood, and everywhere else where we see injustice. I think we all want everyone to be themselves, and his guy is trying to make that possible.

  • @jophus82 Thats cool i def understand what u saying and Gays have 2 let it be known that there just like the rest of the people if not better

  • Ramin Setoodeh is cute. what's his background? indian? soo cute..

  • The author is gay!

  • What an idiot! There have been numerous gay guys playing it straight in movie and TV roles for years, Rock Hudson(Romantic Roles), Robert Reed(Brady Bunch Dad), Dick Sargent(Bewitched). There have been numerous actors for years that when they came out I was shocked and had no clue. This guy clearly was just trying to be controversial and get attention. Sean Hayes and Jonathan Groff are both great actors. I had no clue Jonathan was gay till I read about it. Gay or Straight it doesn't matter!

  • @jamesqueale Couldn't agree more! It sounds like he had a bug bear with Hayes' performance and has tried to extend his point all over the place (which is wrong). Neil Patrick Harris, openly gay, playing a man whore on How our met your mother, is fantastic. Him saying Harris got the role because he was straight, doesn't answer the question of why the audience still loves Harris knowing he isn't. This guy is stoopid is as stoopid does.

  • Rock Hudson was alright as a 'straight' for many, many years! No one even knew he was gay till he came out.

  • A. I think this newsweek writer is a big homo so deep in the closet he's finding Christmas presents

    B. I think Sean Hayes has been type cast because he was so convincing as a flamy queen on Will & Grace

  • @rubick79 Absolutely. This guy is gay!!!

  • Why is it always homophobia if one doesn't agree with the behavior. Are so many people really decieved that Gay people are just born that way? It couldn't be a wound from their past or family situation now could it. I refuse to beleive people are just born that way, but I do beleive they are escaping some pain they have never dealt with and think being gay is their identity...it's not

  • @jacincolo41 Cos you hav a phobia against gay ppl! And that's your own personal perception of what being gay is. I am a very happy lesbian who comes from a wonderful loving family, I've had/am having a fabulous life, no sadness, no pain, no hurt, no family 'situations', never had a desire to escape anything--except the sickening company of homophobes!

I'm just attracted to women rather than men. That's it! :-)

  • @jacincolo41 Weren't you born straight? Are you saying you just decided to be straight at some point, or, was it in fact ingrained within you?

    Free your mind.

  • @jacincolo41: I'm intrigued. When was the moment you chose to be straight? I mean, something that monumental has to be one of those moments you'll never forget, right?

  • test

  • @lovejazz777 You are the most ignorant Ku@t I've ever seen post on youtube. Your quote:

"It couldn't be a wound from their past or family situation now could it... I do beleive they are escaping some pain they have never dealt with and think being gay is their identity...it's not "

How could you know this unless this happened to you- have experienced this? Did you chose to be straight? You are an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This newsweek writer is just a plain moron.

He's just in love with the closet.

  • Dear Ramin Setoodeh, please stop wasting our time projecting your own internalized homophobia onto gay actors, and instead seek therapy to help deal with your own insecurities regarding your sexuality.

  • setodeh is just a gossipy gay who wants to know everyone's private life, thats why this kind of people can not enjoy art! if he thinks hayes doesn't have chemistry with chenoweth, just write so. no need to generalize gay actors, their actings&believable factor!

and his article is NOT examining! it is judging & misleading! i knew groff and harris are gay, i enjoy their performance. joy was too nice to this fucker. bring him to the view, let hasselbeck attack him!

  • After watching this I think the problem is that Setoodeh is just a bad writer. I don't disagree with the idea that audiences can be (though they aren't always) unaccepting of openly gay actors in straight roles--but that's not what he said in the article--he said gay actors CAN'T play straight roles. There's a difference.

  • I think the panel is being VERY kind with this joutnalist. His point is clearly "wanna play straight? stay in the closet!". This "getting the discussion going" is BS.

  • backpedal

  • Also, I do not buy that it's easier for a straight person to play gay. No. It's easier for a straight person to win an Oscar for playing gay, because it's supposed to be some amazing challenge for these poor actors. That's all. I did not buy Tom Hanks or Will Smith as gay. Mel Gibson went as far as having the script changed to make his gay character straight.

  • If there is one thing that gay people have learned to do exceptionally well (of necessity) it's play straight. Ramin is total moron.

  • Ramin can eat $hit for all I care...the guy is an idiot. THINK BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH. Newsweek can go to hell. I'll make sure to boycott where ever this guy does...attacking his own community shameful. HE CAN'T DEAL WITH HIS OWN SEXUALITY due to his race?? IDIOT.

  • I lold at comeing up playboy 3D
