Technically, the riff itself originated from a non-mainstream Sublime song called Superstar Punani. Reel Big Fish (if they were the first to take the opener) switched the cords a little bit and sold it out with their Sell Out song. Still the exact same rythm, though.
Anyway, if ya like the ska genre, you will definitly like that song. Seriously, go listen to it. It's pretty damn awesome. Uptone were the fathers of punk ska. Sublime revived and revolutionized it.
@BongaFish I seriously hope you're joking. First off, the chord progression for this song is absolutely not the same as "Superstar Punani" and it's not even similiar at all (one's an ascending progression and the other descending). Even if you aren't versed in music theory, you can clearly hear they are not even close to the same. Secondly, this chord progression was around long before any ska punk (not the other way around) band ever formed.
Oh, so sorry. Didn't mean to offend you. Yes you're right, it's SO obvious, Even a average joe should be able to tell the difference, but clearly it takes an expert versed in music theory like yourself to point out the error of MY ways because I'M an oblivious philistine. I *must* be joking.
Pff. Gimme a break...
I don't care what you say, they sound extremely similar.
And, hey, even if ska didn't invent the riff, obviously they made it popular amongst ska songs.
@BongaFish If you think they sound extremely similiar then you must be either legally deaf or have complete shit for brains as they're not even close to each other at all. If you have no idea what you're talking about then don't foolishly reply to my comments saying "technically" where the chord progression comes from when you're completely ignorant to what you're commenting on. You didn't offend me at all but it's painfully clear you're offended or embarrassed by your lack of understanding.
Actually, it was your blatantly offensive replies that offended me. Go figure, right?
It seems like being an intolerant bitch is your primary approach in an argument. I didn't learn that one in my diplomacy class, but I'm getting the feeling that it's not as effective as you think. Let me help you out here: Maybe put down the lameass insults and work on gathering a fact or two? Find a non-ska band who first used that riff, for example? Brainstorm with that a bit.
@BongaFish It seems like being an ignorant fool who comments on something he's completely clueless of and cites songs that are absolutely irrelevant is your primary approach to an argument. Your glaring lack of music knowledge and stupidity is exposed for all to see.
Ok, It's becoming very obvious that this isn't about whether I'm right or wrong.
You know, I would have considered your factless, example-less argument if you didn't come off as such an irritable bitch for no good reason. Instead of trying to make me bend, how about you shove that thick, veiny ego your stroking up your own arse and we'll call it a night. Or, you can respond to this with yet another annoying insult, but don't expect mt to answer back, because I am DONE, girlie.
@BongaFish It's hilarious and ironic that you're talking about me not having any examples or facts when all you've done on here is perpetuate misinformation and make false claims with nothing to back it up. I simply pointed out the inarguable fact that this chord progression is used in countless songs and that you're absolutely ignorant in thinking "Superstar Punani" and this song have anything similiar chord wise. Hopefully you learned your lesson to not comment on something you're clueless of.
@BongaFish Stop acting like a upset little baby and go dream about what someone else is putting up their 'arse' because I'm a little creeped out by you at this point.
Wait, how are the top comments the same exact thing by the same person?

@Eggbert1x The verse is the same chords as "Sell Out" but so are dozens and dozens of other ska songs...
