That "Harp Guitar" puzzles me-only six supporting strings-how could he accompany himself with only six notes?

Figure out the scale in which he's playing that particular song and tune the strings accordingly to accompany him for that song. If he plays another song but in a different scale(like from a Major scale to a Minor), then he would retune them accordingly as well. Very simple.

it's an awkward tuning if you couldnt tell.. it's not your typical EBGDAE in the harp section, and in most of andy's songs the guitar itself is either in an alternative tuning or sometimes he uses whats called a third-hand or "partial" capo..
