  • wadsworth constant

  • Use lighting bolt on'em,Tom! LIGHTING BOLT! LIGHTING BOLT!

    lol...

  • For a cleric, his spells are pretty ineffectual compared a knife (what does that do, 1d damage?!). What, did he spend all his points on strength instead of wisdom?

  • thankfully he wasnt playing cuthulu or he would have lost all of his mental healt point ...... WAIT that happend in the movie so whatever

  • at least there more active then most dnd players...then again, how the hell do they decide anything without dice?!

  • @ROBOTPETER101 : another good movie Tom Hanks was in is called "Everytime You Say Goodbye"....he plays a young Canadian Air Force serviceman who is in Spain (I think) and falls in love w/ a young Jewish girl....it's a story about forbidden love.

  • Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between rolling dice and calculating armor values, and actually fighting a lizard man in a cave. RPGs are dangerous, man.

  • Jesus Christ CALM THE FUCK DOWN TOM! It's just a guy in a costume!

You'd think he was sexually abused by gorivils when he was a child or something

  • @ChronicFallacy LMAO

  • @ChronicFallacy Abused by a WHAT????

  • This movie was the Reefer Madness of RPG games. I'm not even an RPG player but I found it appalling. it was made to capitalize on the fear that D&D led to insanity and suicide, which was sort of analogous to the same fears ultra-conservative parents had about heavy metal back in the 80's.

Funny how people still can't accept the fact that RPGs, video games and heavy metal don't cause insanity and suicide.

  • This is what happens when a non-nerd writes a script for a movie about D&D.

  • Lay off the shrooms, Hanks.

  • LMAO I remember the Dungeons and Dragons hysteria in the 1980's, I guess it goes back further than that. Since then it's been what? Metal, movies, rap, video games, that Manson emo, Doom, Duke Nuke'Em, Grand Theft Auto, homosexuals, muslims, socialists, what next? Oh wait, I think we're about due for another moral panic about Atheism.

  • @GodlessInfinity Or fun. It's just the press, Christian groups or the usual people that keep themselves breathing by attacking people who enjoy themselves by minding their own business, entertaining themselves indoors.

  • @GodlessInfinity Manson promotes schools shootings, Gran thef auto promotes crimes, homosexuality promotes aids, muslims promote terrorism, socialists...communism ehh whats the difference, rap promotes drugs, Duke Nuke'Em.... well Duke is the man... Haiillllll to the king baby!

  • Tom Hanks is amazing, LOL

  • This, is, hilarious. He needs to roll for constitution before he starts screaming for help.

  • @25PHANTOM69 your right and after this the others players have to roll dices to see if they hear his scream XD

  • @athomicritics LOL yeah!

  • Since when can a Cleric use a dagger?

  • a gorvil a gorvil vil vil vil

spoony : what the fuck is that the fuck is that that that

LOL i like the review of spoony on it

  • What would have happened If he played a different game?

Tom: Oh my God Im in the jail and I dont have a get out of Jail free card!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! OHHHH MY GOD!!! HELP MEEEE!!!!!

  • @bloodawn5 That's awesome. :)

  • @ScutigeraColeoptrata Yeah If Mazes and Monsters lets you see shit soo real I want to play it!!!

  • This movie is to D&D what Reefer Madness is to pot.

  • Talk about a killer DM.

  • remember watching this and this was in the beginning of the movie. Thinking... "oh yeah... this looks like it's gonna be a good movie!" Wrong... most of it was Tom Hanks freaking out thinking this was all real.. There wasn't any monsters! :( Such disappointment for a 12 yr. old kid.

  • Ha ha! Classic! Remember....at this time, some "in authority" actually DID think this kind of really bad stuff was happening and could happen to bright young minds. Seriously!

  • If anyone gets deluded by D&D, they would have been deluded anyways without it - people go whack over relatively trivial things not because of the thing, but because of a persistent chemical imbalance in the brain.

  • oh the dangers of D&D glad i got threw it with out losing my mind :)

  • This movie was laughable at best. But I still enjoyed every minute of it for, if nothing else, Hank's performance in this one.

  • i cast magic missle to attack the darkness!

  • This movie made me wonder if anyone in actual real life lost there mind in this D&D phase.

  • it just goes to show how evil dungeons & dragons really was! Only jesus can make a succesful saving throw!!

  • Jesus saves, all others roll for damage.

  • hilarious!

  • The thing that bugs me about this is this isn't D&D, which is a tabletop game. This is LARPing.

  • He got engrossed in tabletops and freaked out and thought he was really in the game. Not larping, just psychosis.

  • Now THAT'S how a DnD session should be.

  • No kidding. I'd shit my pants if I found a DM that was actually dedicated enough to set something like that up =)

  • A Gorvil!!!

  • is entensity running out of material???? enough with the gay crap already

  • ummmmm k

    entensity

  • And yet you played it.

  • I really envy you for having such a great older brother, capable of having fun with friends gathered around a table.

I know it's sad for you to be unable to understand how a man can have fun almost for free, even in his 30s, but don't worry little fellow, don't be sad, one day thou shall understand the Words of The Great Elders, and you'll be free again.

Moron. Have respect for the alternative ways of entertainment.

  • what the buttfuck

  • Tom Hanks sucks big huge monster cocks in that maze.

  • amen brother

  • @DoctorStinkyballs That's nice! And ironic.

  • if you have not seen this movie- just know it is horrible. at some point tom hanks gets confused and wonders away to new york and stabs some guys who tried to mug him... but he thought they were monsters...

it ends with tom hanks basically thinking he is still in some game and his friends are all sad about it cause he wants to go on a quest...

  • tom hanks, your such a pussy.man up son

  • I got this for $3 at suncoast since its goin out of business and everythin is 50% off, its alrite, not great, not horrible lol

  • youre all wrong. just read the real story that jaffes book was "based" upon on its wiki page. by the way, what the f*** does lucinda williams have to do with dungeons and dragnerds? nevermind...i dont care.

  • I've looked for this movie for sooo long. I couldn't remember the name and then a friend suggested imdb. Does anyone know if I could buy it on video or DVD? I loved this movie so much.

  • It's available on DVD. They even have it on Netflix. "Mazes and Monsters".

  • Mane this be some of that old school underground Tom Hanks shit

  • Dude totally lost initiative while he was busy wetting his pants. Tom: hallucinations are like dogs, they can smell fear. Next time, reach down and find a pair and make a called shot to the bugger's head.

  • That monster must've had like 2 hit points

  • the easiest to defeat monster in DND history...

  • tom hanks is a very good actor, but thats a stupid movie.

  • OMG! The worse part about this is, he has my nickname: Robbie.

  • Around the same time, I read my mom's book "Hobgoblin". That book had the same effect on me as this movie. In fact, I saw it in a Salvation Army about 3 months ago. I doubt it's still there, but if I see it again, I'm going to buy it.

  • I recall reading "Hobgoblin" too. Not a good story, but it sounded like a pretty intriguing card-based game system. Still, if you don't have to explain the actual game mechanics, it's easy to make anything sound interesting. Like the map shown in M&M. Beautiful, but you'd never be able to play any game that required you to map things that detailed. After all, RPGs are for psychotics, not OCDs...right Ms. Jaffe?

  • Whatever you say, but the name's "Robyn".

  • Er, that's Rona Jaffe. Author of "Mazes & Monsters". She and John Coyne (author of "Hobgoblin") seemed to share the opinion that role-playing gamers were nutjobs. Except unlike most people, they made a lot of money writing books based on that belief.

Well, probably not "a lot". Evidently their names are not exactly well-known.

  • I see. Well... thanks 4 that.

  • actually she was well known enough that her death was noted with a small piece in the paper. this was very, very loosely based on an actual incident in which a gifted gamer-kid who vanished. i don't think this film was as sensationalist as many people think, after all at the beginning there were hints that robbie had flaked before. at the end his parents also noted that they didn't blame his friends, and that he was fragile at the time..again noting that he was predisposed to mental illness.

  • yea some arsehole the III who was a 16 year old prodigy at an MIT somewhere in america went into the steam tunnels to commit suicide, some private eye his parents hired to find him blamed the disapperance on a live action dnd game when really the kid woke up after failing at suicide and ran away to texas

  • Gygax for a start is a genius and made millions if not hundreds of millions in royalties till his partner shafted him

  • Which partner? Co-creator Dave Arneson, who sued him? Co-founder of TSR Don Kaye, who died early? Co-owner Brian Blume, who steered TSR into shallow waters? Or Lucinda Williams, who turned TSR from a earnest but failing enterprise into a profitable joke?

Williams is parodied amusingly in "Knights of the Dinner Table" as the ruthless widow of Gary Jackson, creator of Hackmaster. Seems like Jaffe could have crafted quite a potboiler out of the real-world facts without adding a mental breakdown.

  • I remember this. When I was little, I swore I'd NEVER play D&D if caused 1 to loose his mind. Almost 30 years later, I, finally, went to my 1st D&D game ever. The game was stopped when the players (who are on a ship) got caught in a whirlpool. I had no idea what was going on, but my friends enjoyed it.

  • hmm I agree the acting was tob notch, though the film was also reguarded as true which was bull and the real event had nothing to do with dungeon's and dragons like Hitler was once a painter doesn't mean art and paint are evil.

  • I saw this movie on tv and have the book.

  • Tom Hanks was in a movie that bashes DND...He's die to me

  • Reefer Madness: The Next Generation

  • El stupido!

  • Has this propaganda flick been put on DVD?

  • yup, and you can get it on netflix.

  • Ah cool, thanks. While this thing isn't exactly Oscar worthy, I am curious about it.

  • I hear you can buy it from wal mart and shit in the 5 dollar bin, I've yet to see it though.

  • @Symos or you can get it at an independent movie rental store.

  • @Symos - Can't find it on Netflix. I guess it was taken down.

  • good thing anti-rpgers have gone onto green pastures: video games! i can't wait for the propanda films to start popping up!

  • This movie was meant to scare parents of D+D players with the whole 'this game will make your kids kill themselves' thing. Although pretty strong in the die hard catholic/christian communities, it never really gained popularity.

  • Help Me!!! It's a big rubber lizard!!!

  • NEVER split the party! What a pack of noobs.

  • Well put

  • haha

  • yes in deed

  • what the hell lol

  • lol... modern day propane lanterns... nice touch.

  • CAST MAGIC MISSILE

  • He's in Pequod caverns...an early homage to D & D. Wasn't it bookended with Rona Jaffe footage?

  • Wow I wish RPG's really were like that! Unfortuantely the only time I ever freaked out was when the coke spilled all over the playing field....

  • lol thats gold! Best thing i've heard all day rofl

  • And with thy dreaded casting of hate and wretched evil, the vile floods of coca-cola were cast down upon the downtrotten and standing warriors. And with a bellow shrill, the mage cried out " DAMN IT JAKE NOW I HAVE TO BUY A NEW BOARD! "

  • ooo, my name is jake

  • I hate to break it to you, but the designers of 4E are out to spill coke on you ... every day.
