hey guys i got a question i got the 4850 1 gig 256 bit and whenever i try to update the driver software it always crashes...on 11.5 and 11.6...im forced to use 11.4...anyone know y?....
@Diablos2226 The problem is cooling and the fact that the sensor in the card is way more heat sensitive than normal. What this basically means: You stress test (or game), it gets too hot for the card(but the sensor says it isn't too hot and so the fan doesn't spin hard enough), and you'll get a blue screen so your card doesn't get killed.
How to solve: get better cooling/card (watercooling if you can afford it) and a fan under the card.
i have the same card but now with better heatsink and fan.
This is just rediculous why would you underclock a card that came with this clock speeds they should be able to handle it... I've already had a 4850 that died within 2 month's then I got myself a 4890 which also didn't last longer than 3 month's, don't get me wrong the cards performed great for as long as they operate but imo it are just factory fails!
im experiencing this fucking problem for monthes now and still no solution for that shit. support system is just fucking around with bullshit but they know that this is not just a single problem and that alot of ppl experiencing it. damn, fuck xfx rly
OOFFFF i got te same problem whit XFX HD 4850 XXX I solved underclock the GPU from 650 to 625 and overclock the memory from 1050 to 1100 to have stability and the same speeds
Yah it;s definitely the card in this case. I have the same card XFX 4850 512MB XXX and the same thing happens during Crysis (lucky to get 30 mins of gameplay), Left 4 Dead (although it last longer and you can play anywhere from 2 full campaigns to just 3 levels), and Furmark only lasts 30 seconds.
I have the same motherboard M3A78-EM, AMD 7750BE, 4GB of Crucial ram and a Corsair TX650. Going to buy a 9800GTX+ since it's all I can afford and I doubt I could sell this pos.
I have the same problem, and even the same processor as you. What I did to stop it from crashing is underclocking it to 575/900. This works and games work a bit slower but still fine. I'd try that until a real solution comes out.
@leburn98 i have the exact same problem, i spent a whole day and night testing memory thinking it might be that. but clearly not, and i dont think my card is under warranty anymore.

Just one thing... XFX: Never More... I saw a lot of users beside me with this same problem whith the XFX's 4850. I get a crash on my GPU everytime I play Crysis.
It's not overclocked and the PSU is not the problem, it's a brand new Corsair 520HX...
hey Bro I got the same card and also the same problem, I've been tested everything possible in this world and I myself got scaried when I tried ati tray tools to make the gpu clock 625/500
(mine is 512 mg only), thats looks very unbelievable to me too but for any reason now I can play crysis all High for during hours(wich is cool cuz I couldnt even start ) but sometimes the sistem crash often well try this! I agree that is not the best way to fix it but help till Ati develop something to fix
Hey dude.. I have the same problem and same video card :/// It makes fucking insane.. please if you find a solution PLEASE send me a message on youtube (I ALWAYS use my youtube account! daily)

FOR ALL THE ONES WHO HAS PROBLEMS WITH THIS GPU!!!
underclock the mem. to 900mhz. stock is too high for it to run stable without the passive cooler.
turn catalyst ai and AA off. ccc is one fucked up program and will not work properly with this specific card. do all these and it should run stable.

excuse me, what program i use for underclock the mem.?

some games work perfect (GTA4, FEAR, NFS Shift) but some are just fucked up ( for example it freezes in Trine which is not so uber-graphic-pimped ).
If anyone got a solution - please contact me via pm or just answer that damn comment :D

My first HD4850 was perfect, but the fan didnt work...
Now, i've a new HD4850, perfect, the fan work, but the lastest drivers has some bugs on my Aero with vista....
Some bugs on Crysis and FarCry2 (maybe a problem with directx 10?)
But my GPU test works perfectly :O
3 friends have a ATI HD4850 or a HD4870 and thats work perfectly...
If you want a perfect ATI GPU, be lucky! xD

@leburn98 please, try In your bios set the pcie frequency to 100 not auto.

I had the exact same problem if I tried to start a game or benchmark, screen would go black and had to reboot
The ONLY fucking driver that has worked is the 8.582 that was on the HIS disk. Run drive sweeper first and DO NOT use any of the new versions
PC been pretty stable for the last couple days.
Catalyst Control still crashes. But I've been able to play cod4, L4D, and benchmark programs I've tried, which didnt work at all before
I'll try and up the disk to mediafire later today
