Michigan was easily a top 5 team in the country during the 70's (along with OSU). I'm fairly certain at least one of those teams could of been a National Champion. It's just that OSU had equally great teams at that time and they'd always ruin each others' season. Bo's only weakness seemed to be the damned Rose Bowl. 5 appearances in the 70's, zero wins.
UM and OSU in the 70's was like USC/Texas from the 2005 NC game for 10 years in a row. Thats how good both teams were.
hahaha, those white pants, i hope its always maize pants, i hope they never change there jerseys, i want them to keep it plain and simple, like penn state's
Apparently the reason why we wore the white pants is that was Bo's way of compromising on his players wanting to wear white shoes. He refused to let them wear the then-trendy white shoes worn by the likes of Billy Johnson and many NFL players, so instead he got them white pants.
03:27-06:24 - Any all-time UofM team has to have him at QB. Forget what anybody did in the pros, nobody - NOBODY - ran Bo's option offense better than Ricky Leach.
1969June--Upon the evidence that turf required less maintenance than grass and could withstand any type of weather, the Regents of the University of Michigan approve artificial turf for use at Michigan Stadium. At a cost of $250,000, 88,285 feet of Tartan Turf are installed in July.
Same thing as astro turf just a different company, The turf led to some interesting stories from the big house
WH I think you made a mistake about the players having names on the back of the jerseys. It turns out that in 1980 the players started to have their names on their jerseys.
Makes sense. You cut down on turnovers if you don't pass much, and in bad weather, it makes a lot more sense. And Michigan can be known for bad weather from time to time....
Great video from a diehard Buckeye fan. Rick Leach was a stud, and a Buckeye killer. Glad when he graduated! I noticed the buzzer beater with AC vs. Indiana. Bob Ufer, voice of UM, cried like a baby when that play occured...I heard it live in Northen Michigan. Long live the UM/OSU rivalry...
on point number 7 i think you're wrong, it's not Michigan vs. Colorado in 1974 because Rick Leach is obviously playing in that game and he didn't start playing until 1975. i can't tell you who it is for certain though, cause the football history website only has 1 non conference road game listed while Leach was there, Notre Dame 1978, but it looks like that could be Mizzou.
Hmmm...you're right, that is Rick Leach and I'm almost certain that clip is from 1975. My bad. If you freeze it at 4:01, I thought the letters in the end zone spelled out Colorado but I must be wrong. It's some road game, I just can't tell who the opponent is.
@WolverineHistorian The name in the end zone @ 4:01 is not Colorado. It appears to be "GOLD", then the next TD the endzone says "COUNTRY". Perhaps that is the Minnesota Golden Gophers? Perhaps not...The frame does not go on long enough for one to see if the "Gold" spells out "Golden", "Golden Gopher", etc.
I looked at the '75 schedule; the games against Stanford, Baylor and Missouri were ALL Home games, eliminate those I think. Away games were; Wisconsin, MSU, Minnesota & Illinois. That leaves us to conclude the game @ 4:01 is Minnesota. Furthermore, neither Colorado nor Missouri played against Michigan at all in the games in 1976, 77 and 78. Agreed? Thanks again for posting.
Lots of option plays, 3 backs in the backfield (including the QB). Add to that some outstanding offensive lineman during this period it is no wonder Michigan frequently led the nation in rushing the football. Passing the football? Not so much. You´d have to wait until 1977 season. That is the rennaissance year when Michigan started to air it out a little with any level of seriousness (Leach, Clayton, Marsh, Stephenson).
Correct. He was a freshman in 79. I simply couldn't make a UM football video montage from the 70's and not include AC's catch against Indiana from 79.
why was football players so slow in the 70s and 80s?

Michigan last wore those white pants in the Orange bowl on Jan 1st 1976. The 1976 season they went back to the Maize pants.
Rumor is.... they may go back to white pants this year for an away game... perhaps the Iowa game... I hope NOT...

Too bad he was too small to play in the pros.

From 1:37-1:45, the uniforms suggest the opponent is Minnesota. But I thought Minnesota's Memorial Stadium never had AstroTurf. Confusing.
DNSKansas 2 years ago
According to Wikipedia, Minnesota's Memorial Stadium used Tartan Turf from '70 thru '76.

NO Passes!! Big Ten 1970's? Three yards
and a cloud of dust!!

Did anyone pass back then?
ripperduck 3 years ago
most of the passes in the video are from Rick "ricky" Leach in 1977-78, from 1971-76 we pretty much ignored throwing the ball as a part of strategy.

I think with the combination of Leach (7),
Lytle (41) and Bell (5)...the only game
that it could be is '75 Minnesota.
It looks like it says "Gold Country" in the end-zone.

now that i look at it again, it's probably Iowa, what they have written in that end zone, and why, i have no idea.
harveybullocks1281 4 years ago
It's actually against Minnesota in 1975. The writing the end zone says Golden Gopher Country.

Awesome! Go Blue! Only one question...wasn't AC early 80s? I'm probably wrong though, considering I wasn't born until late 80s. Lol.
