  • damn nice vid

  • Cool !

  • you should make a video explaining your technique!

  • If you dislike this your soul is dead.

  • Can u only get a 6-stringed acoustic bass if u special order it? I would love to improvise around the blues scales on that bass

  • @AnimeLagge - Pretty much, yeah. You might be able to find a crappy mass-produced one, but they're usually pretty bad.

  • @GBagley Then whats the price for a quite good one `? I dont know if I´m able to sacrifice too much money, im still in school so

  • @AnimeLagge They aren't cheap. A quick Google search showed one listed for $1,450.

  • holy shit dude.

  • You are an extraordinary musician. Are you formal trained?

  • @Prickya - Not really. I'm almost entirely self-taught.

  • @Prickya - Not really, no. I'm primarily self-taught.

  • Have you ever considered doing a few recordings on a solo album? I know plenty of people who really dig your music and would buy a record instantly.

  • @sorencasonwood - I'll do a solo album eventually. I just have to write all the material first!

  • @GBagley This. Your bass and the way you play it are some of the coolest things I've seen on the internet. I'm quite a fan of acoustic fingerstyle guitarists, but I've also always had a strong penchant for bass. This music is a lovely fusion of both.

Write away, Mr. Bagley. I for one am eagerly awaiting a studio release.

  • beautifully played

  • beautiful

  • mmmmmm bass cords i love them nice job sound amazing.

  • man you are good

  • loved your mic stand HAHA

  • wow 6 sting acoustic bass, don't see many of troughs.

  • Nice.

  • Dude. You're friggin amazing. And I love you.

  • how many frets????????

  • 24 frets.

  • Nope. Why?

  • Cool!

I've bought myself an acoustic bass too... This is the thing for the URL on youtube: DOEq2uZG87I

  • great bass playing .really sounds good

  • you have a tab?? , my mom love this song

  • Nope. No tabs, sorry.

  • that bass sounds really nice

  • did yous tudy at berklee

  • Nope

  • do you shred the gnar

  • Umm...no. I'm not a skater, if that's what you're asking.

  • dude shredding the gnar doesn't mean just skating. shredding the gnar is doing so sick it's gonna make people's brain go ''fuck yeah''. some bass players are gnarly shredders. just think of manring he's like a solid tre flip.

  • you dont "shred" on a bass.

  • i don't intend it as the ''technique of shredding'' as they do on guitar ( the bily sheehan playing) i meant kicking some serious ass

  • ooh shut up

  • What kind of acoustic bass is that?

  • It was made for me by Mike Kinal.

  • I love your melacholic feel.

  • Really very beautiful, thankyou so much

  • Great! How long have you been playing? A beautiful bass, by the way.

  • Thanks. I've been playing for almost 10 years now.

  • Greg this is your masterpiece in youtube... hahaha

    So Inspiring, nostalgic, and beautyfull,

Thank you so much for the music.

  • this is the most insane thing ive ever seen. you surprise me every time man. i only have 2 things i subribe to on youtube. you just became one of them

  • You didn't subscribe to fred? You're so uncool.

  • well done

  • I forgot how much I enjoy watching you play.

  • Great job, wow! Keep up the good work brother!

  • AGAIN awesome playing, also, i just found you on the endorsers section of the kinal website.

i did not know your an american freelance bass player. but cool :D

  • Wow, this solo is jaw dropping good. Amazing job, I love the switches to the harmonics, goes so nicely. Excellant job. Wish I could do this. ;)

  • man, you just amazing! i love your bass performances

  • This is delicious bass, you must hear it.

  • really good man. I bet you love Azymuth!

  • nice sound. but doesn't groove at all...

  • Are you kidding me . . . you don't play bass I hope . . . did jaco pastorius not groove to you, or do you only listen to metal?

  • nice

  • nice sound and nice looking bass. can you tell me how expansive such accustic bass is?

  • Check out Mike Kinal's website. He has prices listed there.

  • this bass is Strinberg or... Fodera?

  • Have you ever seen a Steinberg or Fodera that looked like this? I haven't. It's a Kinal bass. Read the video description ;)

  • ok, dude. sorry and thanks. =)

  • very impressive...

  • sounds BEAUTYFULL !

isnt hard to play in that tuning ?

( too much tension in the strings ? )

keep up that great playing !

  • Thanks. The strings are meant to be tuned EADGCG, so they're actually tuned down from standard.

  • 1. Is the tuning not EADGCF, basses are always tuned in quarten and G is the quint

    2. from which real book did you get this, I found only Wave.

    3. since how long have you played bass?

  • The highest string is from a LaBella nylon-core piccolo set, so it's meant to be tuned to a high G (an octave above the standard bass G). So I take the EADGCG set and tune it down to C#F#BEAD. I have the Real Book volume 1, bass clef edition. Has this song and at least a couple other Jobim tunes. I've been playing bass for about 9 years.

  • cos i have an acoustic bass an for some reason the G string doesnt come through the amp

  • That would be a problem with your piezo pickups. It either needs a new piezo strip, or the current one needs to be properly adjusted.

  • do you need an acoustic amp to play the acoustic bass??

  • You can play it through any amp, though I'm not using one here.

  • 6 strings acoustic bass??? i don't never see....wow

  • wow, you're a beast

  • thats friggin sweet mate. keep it up

  • Wow! Awesome playing!!

  • hey well done

that looks like a small abs, what brand is it? its sweet.

  • Thanks. It was made for me by Mike Kinal. Says so in the video description, and in the beginning of the video itself ;)

  • That's awesome, dude, really a great job.

  • damn that's nice.

  • nice play!!!

  • This is one of my favorite Youtube videos.

  • You perform with taste and style. Very well done.

  • really good, i like your playing

  • Amazing. Where did you find the sheet music for this?

  • Hah

  • Thanks. It's a jazz standard. I got the chords from the bass clef edition of the Real Book.

  • Thanks man. I'll try to find it on Amazon.

  • very beautiful.. thanks for inspiration :)

  • thats awsome. nice use of harmonics. never seen a 6 string acoustic bass before :D

  • I think for someone to really get the feel for what you are trying to do, they would need to listen to Tom Jobim's version.

It makes your version all the better, knowing you are actually playing the melody of the vocals as well as the music.

Great job, I appreciate and envy your skill.

  • beautiful!

  • Sounds nice, and shit, that thing musta cost you a fortune.

  • Nice playing man! And on an acoustic! Its good to see 6 string acoustic basses. Nice work man

  • Excellent song, mate.

If I ever get to buying an acoustic, it will certainly be a Kinal; yours sounds great.

  • just stopping by...great playing, great sound.

  • Excellent :) I´m about to buy a 4 stringed acoustic ... Your 6 stringed sounds, from another world. And awesome playing skills, by the way ! Sos latinoamericano, calculo ... solamente los del sur podemos tocar como estas tocando vos :) , me equivoco ?

Si me equivoque , abrazos y suerte igualmente, que sos un terrible capo.

  • everyone can play great not only los del sur just practice practice and practice!!!!

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this! You are an excellent musician. That bass is phenomenal as well. I'm a sucker for a six string, but acoustic?? I've never seen one, much less had the pleasure of playing one. Keep it up. You are inspiring.

  • Thanks. 6-string acoustic basses are very uncommon. Only a handfull of quality ones out there, mostly custom made.

  • Hi!

    I'm from Brazil!!

    congretulations!

    very good

  • Thank you very much!

  • edit: i heard a bit of autumn leaves xD

am i correct? (during the 4 minute line)

  • What your hearing is,

    1. the key of this piece is one of the most commen keys used for "Autumn Leaves".

    2. The chord progresstion for "Autumn Leaves" follows a very popular circle of fourths. As so does this towards the four min mark. (Really the whole thing sounds to be fourths to me)

    -Alec Fleming

  • simply amazing, you play with such soul and talent :)

  • awsom skill..

  • simply fantastic.

how long have you been a bass musician?

  • Thanks. I have been a bass musician for about 9 years :)

  • Fantastic!

  • this is awesome! great work!

  • wow this is aweosme

i love the harmonics at the beginning :)

  • god this is my 20th time watching this video..

    cant get enough of it!

  • very nice tone, technique and improvising skills, awesome !

  • very very very beautiful!

    it's perfect, loved it.

    congratulations

  • dude i really love it, you should upload the mp3 ... this is great... believe me , i know...

  • what bass are you playing?!

    it looks awesome

  • Absolutely beautiful. Great job, man.

  • oh man so fucking nice! congratulations! im a brazilian bass player and ive never seen someone plays that music so well as you did! way to go man!

  • Thank you very much! Glad you like it :)

  • Beautiful man, that was beautiful. Very soothing as well. Thanks for sharing.

  • i need to songs to play fast like this too

    preferably jazz

  • wow im not a fan of acoustis stuff...but i gotta hand it to ya you sis and amazing job man this is one of the few acoustic solo pieces that i like

  • Very nice! A sweet instrument, sweetly played!

    *****

    ~R

  • the part that starts at 1:18 sounds like its from the anime Bleach. Dont know why. Very good song. I like the moody look too.

  • i love this song, and your bass version made me love it even more...simply delightful =]

  • totaly agreed ... man a hardly nvr leave commnts ... i jst wrote here cus ur plaing musik from my land and any 1 that can play wats going on in their head diserves @ least a comment

  • when i got this bass it was totaly uneverythinged lol but after i changed strngs and regulated intonation and lowered action and pickups it played jst like a 2000 bass ... well i guess its like food ... if ur a good cook it will taste good

  • Totally true. The rights strings and setup can make all the difference sometimes. A huge part of your tone (that often gets overlooked) also comes from your fingers and you! As you grow as a player, eventually you will find 'your' sound on the instrument, and you will be able to get at least a part of that sound on any instrument that you play. Always remember that the instrument is just a tool for the music that is in your head and your fingers!

  • n man i gotta say ... cant stop waching this video ... i guess ill only stop waching it when im able to play it thogh lol .. on my way

  • well ur musik must b really paing off then cuz my friend 2000 bux sure is expmsive to me

  • In the world of custom bass guitars, 2000 isn't much. 3-grand is closer to an average price for a nice custom made bass, and you can easily spend 4-5 or more. My music usually doesn't pay too much, but I never expect it to. If I like the music/gig, then I'll play it! Any $ being offered is pure bonus. I've got a decent dayjob :)

  • and wow ... i looked ovr some kinals ... man u gotz to b loaded ...i was surprised all right

  • Loaded? Hardly. These Kinal Acoustics are easily one of the cheapest (cost-wise!) custom basses out there. They're a seriously good deal!

  • im jst so impressed by your plaing... i mean WOW... wut about sharimg tha talent ... like showing us some os those modes u use... traning exersises ... stuff like that ... but if u dont wanna thats fine 2... i mean ... jst listening to u play is allready a gift ... but dont be gready ...lol

  • Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I'm always happy to share as much as I can! Though it's hard to just tell someone how to play like me, ya know? I really have no idea what modes or scales I'm using. I could listen closely and figure it out, but then again, so could you. I'm basically just playing what comes into my head. I hear a line in my head, and then I play it. And that comes from many years of playing by ear, and listening to / transcribing a lot of great music.

  • How to get a tone on the acoustic bass like yours?

  • What kind of acoustic bass do you have? This one was custom made for me, with the woods selected so it would have a very warm tone. So that's part of it. The other part is the Thomastik-Infeld Acousticore strings. Nylon-core so they have a naturally warm/organic tone, plus I tune them down (down a minor 3rd on this bass) so they have a lower tension = more fundamental.

  • I hear that you have to know what you're looking for when you buy an acoustic bass guitar; the heaviness and thickness of the wood needed to resist the string tension ends up keeping a lot of the tone in the bass, instead of projecting the sound outward. True?

  • That's partly true. ABGs generally have thicker woods and heavier bracings, because they need to be able to hold up to the higher tension of bass strings. They're also quieter just because of the physics of the lower frequencies. Bass notes need a lot more power to get the same volume as treble notes, acoustically. Most of the time, any acoustic bass won't be loud enough to be heard over most acoustic guitars. I would say look for an ABG with good tone, and then just get a decent portable amp.

  • i be u tought no1 would find out thats tom jobin lol... jst kiddin ... im from brasil .... n i gotta say .. very well executed

  • Great playing, Notes are very clear as usual but (no offence) I'm not to fond of this.

  • es muy buen bajista

  • I love your Kinals, and great playing like usual

  • dont know if its just me but looks like ur sitting in a very uncomfortable position wit ur leg bent like that

  • I'm just sitting cross-legged, with my right foot over my left knee. Totally comfortable for me.

  • Absolutely brilliant!!

    Very good sound, btw.

    Congratulations!

  • Sounds like classical guitar, cool stuff!

  • thats amazing u fukin rock my socks

  • nice bass

    must be expensive

  • You might be suprised. Check Mike Kinal's website for pricing info. His acoustic basses are a sweet deal!

  • just awsome

  • absolutely incredible

  • that was great

  • Greg, it's fantastic! I really can't help it!

Greg, è fantastico! Non posso veramente farne a meno!

  • muy bueno

    bien ejecutado y buena técnica

    buen solo

    excelente

  • Very cool and enjoyable :)

  • how long av u bin playin??

  • About 9 years.

  • ur absolutely fukin ace!!

  • That was amazing !!!!! You never fail to impress me...

  • god I love the beginning. Its so peaceful. Brilliant job man.

  • Fucking nice ass solo

  • i'm brazilian, I like Jobim and your version for insensitive is rare, very nice... A day I'd like play like you...

  • Very nice bro!

  • Your vids are a BLAST! Thanks for taking the trouble to post them for us! Seriously, even without the kitten I am groovin' on 'em!

  • DUDE! THAT RULED! I have a mere 4 stringed Ovation CC74 short scale ABG. This was my first musical instrament. What I have seen and HEARD from you makes me want to become a hermit until I can play 1/32 as well as you! KEEP on keeping on the LOW end! Michael

  • Very, very Good my friend!!!

Tom Jobin is the one of our most great composer ever.

I hope you post anothers Jobim Song.

    Marcos Cobbra

Bass Player from São Paulo - Brazil

  • now i want one, lol. You are a great bassist and you have a great bass right there. Never thought i'd want an acoustic bass until now^^

  • Masterpiece.

    Its inspiring me for something.

But nothing much cos im shit! lol

  • Excellent piece! I'm very impressed with your playing, and I'm curious about how you approach learning a piece like this....sheet music, tab, by ear, etc. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting on YouTube!

  • Thanks. I've known the melody for a long time, just from hearing it (it's a pretty simple melody to learn by ear). I got the chords from the Real Book (bass clef edition) and worked out my own voicings that fit well under the melody. Eventually I'll work on doing rootless voicings and other chord variations to make it more colorful too.

  • Excellent!

  • You rock. That was great.

  • Very very awesome! Gotta love those strings. Great bass and great playing!

  • WOW!!! amazing player!!! amazing bass!!!

  • Really nice bass by the way.

  • I can hear some jaco influence in the intro if I'm not wrong.

  • I think pretty much any bassist who plays harmonics is influenced by Jaco. He's the man!

  • AHaha I'm giving you another 5 star for that.

  • Amazing!
