I admit... I do like Ryu Hayabusa and his hardcore fighting, but I just like Hotsums, the character Ryu was inspired by, a little bit more...

@ExistenceProduction The first Ninja Gaiden ever, featuring Ryu Hayabusa, was an 8 bit NES title from more than 20 years ago. I'm not sure why they included him in the first DOA, but then they eventually started making new Ninja Gaiden after those became popular. So yeah. Not sure about that whole inspired by thing you're saying.

@Gagoushou I've kind of keep hearing that Ryu is inspired by Hotsuma... Maybe it's just the way he looks and/or his character that was that was inspired. Hotsuma is a young ninja, hard core, has his mouth and nose covered, and has headgear, much like Ryu. I can't remember when Shinobi was made for the PS2, but it's an old game. I'll have to know when the first Ninja Gaiden on the PS2 was made to compare when those two games were made.

@ExistenceProduction I don't think NG ever came out on PS2. It used to be XBox exclusive, and by the time Sony was able to get a version it was already PS3/360 generation. The thing is, aside from a fancier outfit and possibly grimmer personality, probably to show off the new graphics tech and to match the games' style, Ryu hasn't changed much from 1990. Even then, he was a young but stern heir to his clan, inherited the Dragon Katana, guarded/pursued the Demon Statue, etc.

@ExistenceProduction The thing about the look is both Ryu and Hotsuma are sporting stylized versions of otherwise generic ninja outfits. Ryu's black, armored outfit that people know now still looks like his old, blue cloth outfit from his first game, complete with no sleeves showing off his biceps. I think people just notice the similarities and jump to conclusions. Rikimaru of Tenchu matches the same mold as these two, as well, to a limited extent.

It is true that people jump to conclusions too soon, and it does create problems.

All I quite heard was that Ryu was inspired by Hotsuma, but I wasn't sure.

It was explained in the first game that Ryu carries the blood of both demons and dragons within him. Demons exist by feeding off the lives of those they kill. How many lives has Ryu taken? Innumerable, and all that power will have fed the demon half of him, giving it strength, corrupting him. It makes sense story-wise to explore this tangent. I personally can't wait to see where they go with this.

I have this deep unnerving feeling in the pit of my stomach that the whole game I am going to have to sit through hours of Ryu bitching "whoa is me", "feel bad for me" that has been in most if not all of anime today (Bleach, DBZ, Naruto).
