anyone got any tips on how to get that Chris Isaak steel guitarish reverb going on? I can't seem to quite emulate it right, sounds like there is some kind of rotary effect going. I wonder if I could emulate it in guitar rig?
i saw them open for The Cure in Hyde Park, London, 2002. Mogwai was there as well.
i traveled from Montreal for the show (i'm a huge Cure fan). anyway, i love Cranes as well and there was this group of rowdy people from Portsmouth next to me and one of them kept referring to Allison as "helium goth barbie".
How come when I try to download this song, it's never the same version?? I look up "beautiful friend" by Cranes, but it's a whole different version! I need help to get THIS version!
@videlli63 Love the comment! My dad was part of the beat generation, he loved his xk120 convertible but didn't risk taking it on their route 66 trip, so they used his buddies MG TF instead!!! They did get all the way to California . . . eventually. : )
Genius and undervalued. I remember going to an instore signing at Tower records in September 1991 by them and only 7 people came, kind of "avant guarde/spinal tap" for them, but they put all of us on the guest list :-) So happy they still exist. Beautiful.

First time I heard Beautiful Friend got amazed because of this rythmic metalic sound that comes from the bassdrum pedal. Guess some smart sound engineer decided not to remove it (by lubing springs, for instance), it gives character to the sound in a similar way fingers sliding over the strings give character to a guitar or a bass.
@TheReapersSon : It's from the album "Loved", I think it came out in 1994 and then on CD in 1997.
I Loved Cranes since then, but it was and still is hard to find records from them here in Mexico, since they realeased the album "Cranes" in 2008, they came out to light a little bit and I started to find more music and blogs talking about them, I specially love this particular song.
I have someone whom I consider a "beautiful friend", but I can't figure out how to properly convey my feelings. I feel as though even if I can't follow the lyrics of this (due to her quite unique) vocal style, I feel that there is more emotion here than I could even give away with my own thoughts and words.
I might just send her this song and hope she enjoys it as much as I do. :)
Can I... to A.F.F. yes, your description of Alison S. voice is fascinating, and certainly most of their songs are built up on spectral aethereal loops based on the contrast between the child-like vocal style and the post-industrial sounds (I think mostly about "Self Non Self" and "Wings Of Joy"), thought in some not well songs you would be surprised of how powerful and deep can be her vocalization... I think they melt up a post-shoegaze and learned industrial new-style... Cranes 4Ever

mmmmmm It seems to me you are a little bit mistaken. I was working in a radio station when they visited Mexico City, after the tour they went three weeks to the pacific zone and come back to Mexico city, I remember perfect as I has the interview with them. So if they did not like the city they would not have came for sightseeing. Anyway It does not matter.
Maybe your English is a bit shaky, but try to re-read what I wrote. YES, they liked Mexico City quite a lot, enough to make special note of it elsewhere. RMM∞
. . . and I too personally believe that it is a beautiful "jewel" of a city, nothing else in N. America compares!
I feel those days without end when we used to be friends those summer days were spent in search of hope and happiness we used to while away our days in a beautiful haze I guess I knew one day that you'd be moving long away you said go back to your dream back to your wilderness go back along the walk maybe you'll find some happiness
I wept a thousand tears for you for my love that came true and soon I realized I'd always dreamt it'd come to this And though that time passes by and that our lives have changed but our love was special our love was strange And though my heart broke in time it did mend except when I think about the time that we used to be friends
Ha Ha, no, not at all! If you're rubbing crystals in hopes that they'll make your life better, well, then maybe you could use a few science classes, but beyond that, your good! I like some of the Cocteau Twins stuff too, ya know. :) RMM ∞
I saw them twice in live in the early 90s. I have been trying to get news from them but their (non-official) website seems not to have been updated for a while. Does anyone knows if this band has still plans for the future ?
hey....! he escuchado esta canción millones de veces... me fascina, es la 1era vez que veo el vídeo, no sabía que se había grabado en el centro del DF. muy bueno!!!!
felicidades... ahora estaré al pendiente cuando vuelvan a venir...!
This is my fave Cranes. Stong. People have tons of Faves. It's weird though, I love this song and Stalk off of Population 4. Im not sure. However this song would be in the soundtrack of my life. Thats for sure
I like The Cure and The Cranes and but The Cure's Fascination Street is one of my least favourites of theirs. I'll take the likes of A Hundred Years over the poppy Fascintion Street any day. I am really into The Cranes ethereal sound and lover her voice. Besides, The Cranes are from my home town so stop dissing them.
Cranes loves Mexico City is one of their favourites places to play and please don´t call the the Cranes is just cranes thanx nice video by the way
ya decia conocer esos lugares... imagino tamb que el de shining road fue filmado tamb en algun bello lugar de mex... me fascina mucho cranes es una bandototota y no necesita niun puerco grammy para afirmar que son de los mejores...
I was going to see The Cure in concert for the "Wish" tour. I bought the tickets first, then heard the album. I absolutely hated "Wish". So much so that I almost skipped the concert. I went and saw Cranes opening the show. It was as if Robert Smith was saying, "Okay, I know we suck now, so here's a great band to replace the void that we left."
I hope Cranes never puke out the crap that The Cure does these days. Stay creative Allison!
All bands have their "day in the sun". I kinda feel the same as you do about the Cure, they've overstayed a bit, but it's hard to tell when you've "gone stale" looking from the inside out.
Cranes regrouped a bit, and took a different direction with their "Particle Wave" release. Not sure I "partic"-ularly care for that new direction, but to each their own. At least they are not re-stomping the same tired old grounds.
they could never replace cure cause their songs are not that great. i love the sound, allison's voice and looks, the atmosphere, the attitude but where exactly are their kyoto song? fascination street? 10.15? caterpillar?
A matter of opinion I'm sure you must know, besides, what band could "replace" another, nor would anyone want that? They are each there own, and I might add popularity is far from proof of quality (just look who "make's it" on the Billboard charts). Frankly, the fact that this band produced no real "pop" tunes is more a credit than a curse (except to their bank accounts). Thank god music is NOT that cookie cutter, just a bunch of bins to be filled with new materials every now and again.
the fact that this band produced no real "pop" tunes is more a credit than a curse - as the biggest captain beefheart and Can fan in existence I readily agree. not saying linear songwriting is the only way to go (not sure The Cure fall under that category either, they were so incredibly diverse). but you got to have more than atmosphere, and Cranes, imho, don't. can't see what in my comment called for mention of Billboard charts btw
It's a matter of what you like best. I actually like "atmosphere" and intensity, Cranes music tends to really tear into me, and makes a stronger impression than any pop band. The Cure isn't really one of my favorite bands. They produced a lot of GREAT tunes, but lots of "klinkers" too (always did). Just a bit too "pop" oriented and all over the place ("klinkers") to make that much an impression on me as a "band", despite their many very fine "singles".
I might add, I really don't expect you or anyone else to agree with me on this, it's all very personal, which is more to my point. I think it's futile to try to compare and value one band to or over another (apples and oranges). A bands music/style either speaks to you loudly, somewhat or not at all, and that's all just perfectly fine, as it should be. RMM∞
The Billboard example? Popular ≠ better. The Cure has a big fan-base, no doubt you have majority support for your opinion, but does that make it more valid? More Cure fans than Souixie and the Banshees fans, so are they BETTER? More U2 fans than all combined, are THEY better? (eek!) Just offering a caveat. Again, I don't think valuing & comparing bands is really all that valid anyway, usually just causes unneeded friction.
sure. try the cure's the top, it's smith's most weird and intense album, which everyone thinks is his but is actually the very best
and by "an't see what in my comment called for mention of Billboard charts btw" what I meant was why do you think anyone here would be as dumb as to not realize that Popular ≠ better.
Dumb is a bit harsh. Sure, probably aren't many fans of Hillary Duff's music here =) , even so, people are only human, you'd be surprised how your thinking changes when you find "yourself" in the catbird seat! "20 million Elvis fans can't be wrong"! I would have liked to see what direction Robert's music would had taken had he not had the monster hits. No doubt of the pressure to produce because of them, and naive to think all that had no negative consequences. I will try "the top", thanks.
Wow where did find all these great Cranes videos? I never knew any of these (exc. tomorrow's tears) existed. Great job! And I agree with miaow777, they never got proper credit for how much they changed alternative music.
derand57- It is nice to know there are other Cranes fans out there still. I think I may have accidentally marked your comment as spam-I was trying to give you a thumbs up! Sorry for the confusion. Did you ever get to see the Cranes?
The Cranes never received any recognition for their influence. They are one of my favorite bands. I am extremely jealous of those that were able to see them live.
Yea, in retrospect, I wish I would have seen ALL their gigs (avoided the stadium/support venues). They were such a good band to see play live! Now you've got me all misty-eyed about their performance at the old 9:30 Club in DC. Used to be THE BEST intimate venue I knew of (as I understand it though, the band really didn't like the place, go figure). RMM ∞
YO.. Old thread.. but I used to LOVE the OLD 9.30... I always prefered gigs where you could talk to the crowd.. its true we once had a rat walk thru the dressing room, but still... great gigs and people....
Hey Mark, thanks for chiming in on that. It's something I had heard and figured maybe it was just a "two sides to every coin" kinda thing, what's in it for the audience and, unseen to us, what the talent has to put up with! Freinds of ours played CBGB's once, now THAT'S a rat hole, but what a history! : )
all is beautiful in this band, i love all of them, it's something magical and full of holy........ i saw it when i lived in mexico city in el museo del chopo amazing..............
When I first heard this band, I didn't like them at all... I'm glad I gave them a second chance! It's like their music is made of dreams, and that voice... it's so lovely, it makes me want to cry...
Wow, very odd! The vocals are present, maybe you need to check your settings, however I'm at a loss what might filter out the voice part only for you!?
I heard them in the early 90s .. nice to see them, and all the stuff i missed from only having the one album .. and Cranes, no "the", ok? Ok~!

This is my fave Cranes. Stong. People have tons of Faves. It's weird though, I love this song and Stalk off of Population 4. Im not sure. However this song would be in the soundtrack of my life. Thats for sure

If there is a god of music his name is Cranes. My heart is made of the same substance as their music.

Este video fue filmado en la Ciudad de México, se alcanza a ver el pórtico del Palacio de Bellas Artes, La Catedral y el edificio de correos, es increible pensar que aunque sea una vez pisaron suelo mexicano.

Nothing has ever come close to describing my mood at times, as the Cranes does. A wonderful group of people to meet as well.

Stay creative Allison!
themiff 4 years ago 2
All bands have their "day in the sun". I kinda feel the same as you do about the Cure, they've overstayed a bit, but it's hard to tell when you've "gone stale" looking from the inside out.
Cranes regrouped a bit, and took a different direction with their "Particle Wave" release. Not sure I "partic"-ularly care for that new direction, but to each their own. At least they are not re-stomping the same tired old grounds.
RainbowMonkeeMittens 4 years ago
they could never replace cure cause their songs are not that great. i love the sound, allison's voice and looks, the atmosphere, the attitude but where exactly are their kyoto song? fascination street? 10.15? caterpillar?
and post disintegration cure sucks for sure
NoBlood4Oil2007 4 years ago
A matter of opinion I'm sure you must know, besides, what band could "replace" another, nor would anyone want that? They are each there own, and I might add popularity is far from proof of quality (just look who "make's it" on the Billboard charts). Frankly, the fact that this band produced no real "pop" tunes is more a credit than a curse (except to their bank accounts). Thank god music is NOT that cookie cutter, just a bunch of bins to be filled with new materials every now and again.
RainbowMonkeeMittens 4 years ago
the fact that this band produced no real "pop" tunes is more a credit than a curse - as the biggest captain beefheart and Can fan in existence I readily agree. not saying linear songwriting is the only way to go (not sure The Cure fall under that category either, they were so incredibly diverse). but you got to have more than atmosphere, and Cranes, imho, don't. can't see what in my comment called for mention of Billboard charts btw
NoBlood4Oil2007 4 years ago
It's a matter of what you like best. I actually like "atmosphere" and intensity, Cranes music tends to really tear into me, and makes a stronger impression than any pop band. The Cure isn't really one of my favorite bands. They produced a lot of GREAT tunes, but lots of "klinkers" too (always did). Just a bit too "pop" oriented and all over the place ("klinkers") to make that much an impression on me as a "band", despite their many very fine "singles".
RainbowMonkeeMittens 4 years ago
I might add, I really don't expect you or anyone else to agree with me on this, it's all very personal, which is more to my point. I think it's futile to try to compare and value one band to or over another (apples and oranges). A bands music/style either speaks to you loudly, somewhat or not at all, and that's all just perfectly fine, as it should be. RMM∞
RainbowMonkeeMittens 4 years ago
The Billboard example? Popular ≠ better. The Cure has a big fan-base, no doubt you have majority support for your opinion, but does that make it more valid? More Cure fans than Souixie and the Banshees fans, so are they BETTER? More U2 fans than all combined, are THEY better? (eek!) Just offering a caveat. Again, I don't think valuing & comparing bands is really all that valid anyway, usually just causes unneeded friction.
RainbowMonkeeMittens 4 years ago
sure. try the cure's the top, it's smith's most weird and intense album, which everyone thinks is his but is actually the very best
and by "an't see what in my comment called for mention of Billboard charts btw" what I meant was why do you think anyone here would be as dumb as to not realize that Popular ≠ better.
NoBlood4Oil2007 4 years ago

Great job! And I agree with miaow777, they never got proper credit for how much they changed alternative music.
derand57 4 years ago 4
derand57- It is nice to know there are other Cranes fans out there still. I think I may have accidentally marked your comment as spam-I was trying to give you a thumbs up! Sorry for the confusion. Did you ever get to see the Cranes?
miaow777 4 years ago
The Cranes never received any recognition for their influence. They are one of my favorite bands. I am extremely jealous of those that were able to see them live.
miaow777 4 years ago
Yea, in retrospect, I wish I would have seen ALL their gigs (avoided the stadium/support venues). They were such a good band to see play live! Now you've got me all misty-eyed about their performance at the old 9:30 Club in DC. Used to be THE BEST intimate venue I knew of (as I understand it though, the band really didn't like the place, go figure). RMM ∞
RainbowMonkeeMittens 4 years ago
YO.. Old thread.. but I used to LOVE the OLD 9.30... I always prefered gigs where you could talk to the crowd.. its true we once had a rat walk thru the dressing room, but still... great gigs and people....
markfrancombe 2 years ago
Hey Mark, thanks for chiming in on that. It's something I had heard and figured maybe it was just a "two sides to every coin" kinda thing, what's in it for the audience and, unseen to us, what the talent has to put up with! Freinds of ours played CBGB's once, now THAT'S a rat hole, but what a history! : )
