I cried watching this...it hurts me so much to see animals losing their teeth. I know the loss of her teeth is the least of her problems but it makes me sad.
Those are awfully adorable names for such big kitties.... You guys should be really proud of yourselves, it's obvious that you know how to take care of ligers better than most<3
How come many hybrids with parents from different genus, like camel-llama and bison-cattle, are often fertile and healthy, but ligers/tigons with parents from the same genus are sterile and have birth defects? It's strange.
@RoseScentedBlackTea Mules are also completely sterile, despite their parents being from the same genus. I'm no genetics expert, so the only explanation I can offer is that it's just evolution. Ligers and Mules were just not meant to pass on their genetic codes and become a natural species.
@8FourteenWords8 Crossing different species of the same genus is bad. "Race" mixing within a single species (assuming you're referring to humans) is good. Genetic diversity.
18! Good lord, her parents were probably already badly inbred and coupled with the years of neglect, she must be quite a fighter to have survived for so long. I'm glad she found a good home, she's a magnificent animal.
i dont think hybridization is necessarily bad but i dont know why people make ligers knowing the fact they will not be any real use to society and will have life long problems... only example of a sucessful hybrid i can think of is probably the mule. Besides that fact it cant reproduce i dont think it has any quality of life problems... hope one day unnecessary hybridization is banned
"No use to the society ": well breeding any kind of big cat whether it is a hybrid or not is of no use other than the possible use as a zoo animal. I think you are very correct in saying that ligers do not have a quality of life problem. However it is not 100% true that they can't reproduce. They females can and do reproduce.
@pallab1234 not really... a mule is a hybrid and it is very useful for people because it can carry like 2x more than a donkey... and no mules cannot reproduce because they have a chromosomal defect so that a zygote cant be formed (not sure of this applies to both female and male)
@slicingwater both are bad. inbreeding causes problems too. Hybridization can cause problem where genes are expressed differently or are in different locations within the genome, though. That is why most hybrids are sterile (like mules).
Is she still alive today? I know it said she was rescued in 2008, that "a year later she was doing better" and that she was 18 years old (when she was rescued). How much longer did she live?
And Kudos to your amazing work! Sanctuaries should know what they're getting themselves into before they go and abuse their animals out of ignorance T_T
The link to the 'facts about ligers and why they should not be bred' doesn't work..? I was thinking about visiting T.I.G.E.R.S. in myrtle beach, S.C. where they keep ligers and various other animals. A spokesman for the preservation said that most people believe the myth that ligers are unhealthy. If they are lying about that should I trust that the profits actually go towards helping the animals in the wild?
the video is on youtube, titled "The Truth about Ligers" on the LigerChannel
Poor old cat. I just recently had a domestic female cat sitting on my lap. Just less than a week ago. She's right around the same age as this one. Might even be a bit older. The cat has trouble getting around. That's one of three cats in that area. That are of legal human voting age.
@BigCatRescue When you cremate the cats, what do you do with the ashes? If you bury them, or even if you don't, do the cats get grave markers of any sort? Everyone at BCR seems to love and adore these cats like a big family so I thought I'd ask if there's anything special done when one passes away.
Ligers are cross bred right? so the only way we can make a liger is through human involvment because a lion and tiger don't hump do they? my question is, what's the point? I love how awesome the animal looks but what still don't see the point, what do we hope to achieve out of this?
@mackayash Ligers are an hybrid. There's no reason why they should be bred we are 100% against this abusive practice, the only reason they are bred is because the public will always pay to see something different, so the animal exploiters will continue to do so to make money :(
@BigCatRescue That's what I figured...where there is profit involved people will do anything, its sad really. So where did you guys rescue this liger from exactly?
she appears to be walking better after the adjustments made from diagnosing her neurological condition. you are taking such amazing care of her. may god bless everything you do for these precious beasts. ==^.^==
LOL i agree with the comment below, why does she sound so funny when she roars? she sounds like she has flem down her throat. and thanks so much for saving cats :)
@PrincessSakuno The video of her roaring is a short roar "get out my face" kind of thing, she also roars to mark her territory like lions do, they have different roars :)
What do Ligers sound like when they roar? I know lion and tiger roars sound different from each other, tigers have a more moan-like roar than lions. Do ligers have a different roar?
i am confused,,,how did she survive sooooooo long if she was treated so badly by her previous owner? by your own admission she's older than most ligers. SOMEBODY must have taken good care of her for a very long time i donot approve of people owning these cats but somebody loved and cared for her well for a long time..maybe she changed hands at some point that made her what she was by the time you got her,big cat rescue is in my Will. when my time comes its not much but use it well
@gypsy269 Because Freckles isn't as huge as most ligers, this may be the reason she has lived for so long, she definitely hadn't been in good care before we rescued her, for what amount of time we're unsure...? We're so happy that we could rescue her from the filthy conditions in Mississippi and give her grass to roll around in and a great diet, thank you for your support, with out people like you we couldn't keep doing what we do :)
thank you and all your wonderful staff that not only aim to entertain but also educate us about the wonderful cats that call your rescue home !! I hope that the animals know how truly blessed they are to be in such a caring environment.....Cyn :O)
@cyntalkz87 Hey buddy.! This place is only like five miles from my old house in Tampa. In a part of Tampa called Citrus Park. This is truely a wonderful sanctuary.! Been There, got the T-Shirt. :) HugZ ...DK
@armitage36 UR so lucky !! I simply love freakin big cats and to see them as well taken care of as BCR does is just too cool !!!! LMAO got the "T-shirt" love it !! another reason that you rock !!!!!.....Hugs...Cyn ...ps gonna send you a PM later have stuff to discuss !! ......

I'm happy you rescued Freckles, she looks great and I guess this is the best reward for you guys.
Wow! 18 years old for a Liger! And she's still looking GREAT! It's so wonderful that you rescued her from a life of breeding just to create hybrids. She looks so happy to be at BCR (: I'm so happy she's doing well!

This is a thank you for sharing these kinds of videos and for saving these beautiful animals. God bless Freckles, I really enjoyed this beautiful story. Thanks for sharing! 18 is old for a Liger!Gosh, that is even old for a dog ! Are guys really sure she is 18.It's really good how you guys took so much effort to improve her life despite being a Liger. It's not her fault she came in this way, and I like seeing that she gets the same as all the other animals there get.
@deaffob Yeah, they look that way but they are stronger than what the USDA requires, they're spot welded on each 4x4 inch joint which makes the material extremely durable. The enclosures are rooted top and bottom by trees and tree roots and are circular in design allowing wind to pass through them. Very strong enclosures :)
It's really cool how you guys took so much effort to improve her quality of life despite her being a Liger. It's not her fault she came into the world this way, and I like seeing that she gets the same love and respect as all the other animals there get. Well, she does now, anyway. Shame on people who think they can buy some fenced area in the backwoods of Mississippi and call it a "sanctuary". It's time we brought down the hammer on those guys!!!
And people claim that ligers are completely healthy, and a 'better' cat then their parents. I'm glad she's getting the best care from BCR! I love Freckles whenever I see her in your videos, it always makes my day.. Well any video from BCR makes my day.
Thank you for all you guys do!!!! We don't rescue animals... they rescue US! If people would just realize what the statement really means, the world would be totally different. PeaCe! ≈^*..*^≈
Its sad that people mix breed..and for what..something new.. because they thinks its cool. What the result for the poor animal.. short life span and genetic problems. Its so awesome that Big Cat Rescue is there to give her a good life. I can't wait to visit on the 20th of this month :)
@HaterHaterz Jobs are few and far between and we usually hire from our volunteer force. Visit our website BigCatRescue*org for info about volunteering :)
@loverlover2 i agree and people like loxibannij are the ones that holler that people need to be take care of and then sit back and do nothing!! also this person needs to realise that this poor animal didnt ask to exist and she needs to be cared for by those that can make that existance a little better!! i love the work bigcatrescue does for these poor neglected animal sthat would otherwise die a horrible painful death!!
@ballin7077 Not at this stage, introducing mature cats will result in fighting all cats are solitary except for lions and any big cats need to be introduced at a younger age.
@BigCatRescue Yea, I thought so. I feel like these cats you guys harbor would have a much better life if they had a friend or something, but it can't be helped sometimes.
great! I HOPE U KEEP HELPING HER AND OTHER ANIMALS

It's time we brought down the hammer on those guys!!!

awww....poor liger. :( but at least she doing better now and getting the care she needs.
blueravenfire 8 months ago
And people claim that ligers are completely healthy, and a 'better' cat then their parents. I'm glad she's getting the best care from BCR! I love Freckles whenever I see her in your videos, it always makes my day.. Well any video from BCR makes my day.

Its sad that people mix breed..and for what..something new.. because they thinks its cool. What the result for the poor animal.. short life span and genetic problems. Its so awesome that Big Cat Rescue is there to give her a good life. I can't wait to visit on the 20th of this month :)

@CryptsDay
It boils down to greed. A lot of suffering on this planet because of greed and profit. :(

this is the reason why i always root for captive animals that retaliate against their abusers.

every idiot will reply to me now?
loxibannij 8 months ago
@loverlover2 i agree and people like loxibannij are the ones that holler that people need to be take care of and then sit back and do nothing!! also this person needs to realise that this poor animal didnt ask to exist and she needs to be cared for by those that can make that existance a little better!! i love the work bigcatrescue does for these poor neglected animal sthat would otherwise die a horrible painful death!!

TheYear18 8 months ago
@TheYear18 We had vet technicians monitoring her up front with the anesthesia etc... Freckles would show signs before she woke up
BigCatRescue 8 months ago
Is it possible for her to have a companion or someone to play with in her enclosure?
ballin7077 8 months ago
@ballin7077 Not at this stage, introducing mature cats will result in fighting all cats are solitary except for lions and any big cats need to be introduced at a younger age.
BigCatRescue 8 months ago
@BigCatRescue Yea, I thought so. I feel like these cats you guys harbor would have a much better life if they had a friend or something, but it can't be helped sometimes.
