Ed, Glad to see you put jazz flatwounds on this bass. I played a new similar Eastwood bass in-store yesterday. I was puzzled why it had roundwounds - didn't seem to fit the era & sound.
20 years ago, in middle school, I learned on a '60 short scale Airline bass. I prefer Fender Jazz now, but I'm drooling at this model & tone.
@AndyRespire - Yeah, this one came with rounds... probably just cheaper to use from the factory. But this bass came to life when I put the Thomastiks on. I usually find them too floppy for my taste, but on a short scale, they're just right.
Sorry, I should have asked this the first time. Is the neck thick front to back? I think of a 55 P being too think for my taste front to back, where as I find a 08-10 P bass very comfortable.
@Crodon - Is $800 insane? Not for a quality bass. Yes, it's Chinese, but it is built exceptionally well. I've had this bass for almost 2 years now and I gig with it quite a bit. This is not a cheap Chinese crap, it's a real bass.
I have seen a number of your You Tube bass guitar videos. Have you ever done review of the old 70's era Gibson EB-1 reissue violin bass? I like the looks of this short scale bass which seems abit more substantial to say a beattle bass. Thanks.
Hello Ed. I've been playing bass for about 3 years with a beginner bass and I definately need a new bass. I've watched tons of your reviews and i was hoping if you could point me to the right direction. I'm still a student so the budget would have to be at about a 1000 euros/dollars. See i'm hoping to get a versatile bass, cause i enjoy alot of different styles, but mainly funk and bluesrock. Just thought i'd ask some advice instead of watching every video :)
I'm a little annoyed by the fact he plays too quitely. I know that's kinda the point of bass, but I still think you need to hear it, otherwise your not really contributing to the overall sound much.
First off, I must say that your demos are extremely useful. People seem to forget the scientific method: keep everything the same and change only one variable (playing style, pickup configuration), and honestly, I prefer you repeating the same riffs, as it gets me to understand what the bass sounds like.
So keep doing what you are doing, you are helping me as a bassist and a potential buyer looking at different products. You also are a good player; don't let the haters get to you.
Thanks Ed personally I'm not that impressed with the basses but regarding the haters they obviously want you to run the fret board because they have no groove or soul.
Well, you can't please everyone. Luckily, I seem to please more people than I don't - so, the occasional hater is really pretty easy to overlook. Considering how I see many people behave on Youtube, I consider myself very lucky!
In my opinion a demo is not suppose to be entertaining but rather informative. A simple bass line that is repetitive is EXACTLY waht you want to hear so as to make an accurate evaluation. I can't help but wonder...can those who think this was boring play the chordal movement in the second register as demonstrated? I'm guessing not.

Your demos R EXTREMELY boring. Find something that has SUSTAINED notes, & moves across the whole neck, instead of little plunking crap that repeats so much - god how lame.
And you are free to not watch them too. I personally LIKE lame, plunking crap that repeats, so don't bother to watch or comment on my videos anymore. I will base my decisions on the thousands of positive comments I get from viewers, and not one disgruntled hater with bad manners.

It's true though, your demo songs are very boring and useless. You should play up & down the neck, something sustained so we can hear the texture and stuff, instead of just tired 'plonking' mowtown-style junk.
Sorry, tired plonking MOTOWN style "junk" is my specialty. You'd better start watching someone else's bass reviews. If you want to see someone run chromatic scales up and down the neck, look elsewhere. Thanks!
Do you think the Lakland 55-02 are worth their price? I mean, it's definitely a good bass, however, at its price, there are hand-fretted US-made instruments... I don't know, how do you feel about it opposed to your sterling, for example?
Well, the 55-02 is a great instrument regardless of where it comes from. It's a real Swiss Army knife bass. The Sterling (a little more expensive) is also a killer, and while on the surface you may see similarities... they sound completely different. I own both, and love both. I have long preferred 34" scale basses, so the Sterling sees more use these days. But the 55-02 gets a killer Jazz bass-type tone and has an awesome B string. Win-Win.
Well, personally I love both sounds, but I'm too afraid of being stuck with the same Music Man sound range. Since I can only afford one bass, I think I'm buying the 55-02.
The Sterling is a very versatile instrument too, with the series/parallel switch you can get two very distinct characters, and then with the eq... lots more too. If you get an HS or HH model, even more sounds. But they are still different than the 55-02. Once again, for me a big determining factor is the 34" scale.
Yes, a student of mine has one. It's nice. There are several inexpensive Club bass clones on the market, some from Hofner.... this one is right in the middle, not the best, not the worst. Certainly good for the money.
Thanks, I've done my share of session work over the years. I'm also a teacher - check out the 20 instructional books I've written for Hal Leonard on my website - edfriedland(dot)com.
That is an Eastwood Classic 4, I reviewed it a while back, and yes.... it's mine now. I love it, and play it frequently. Check my channel for the review.
Well, I put flatwound strings on it which tend to not slap that well. This bass could be slapped with rounds on it, but frankly I think that's kind of missing the point of this instrument - just my opinion.
