  • how much would one of these new airlines set me back?

and can i get it in all black?

  • Som legal, mas é feeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiio!

  • wild bass player, but what a shithouse guitar!

  • Ed, Glad to see you put jazz flatwounds on this bass. I played a new similar Eastwood bass in-store yesterday. I was puzzled why it had roundwounds - didn't seem to fit the era & sound.

20 years ago, in middle school, I learned on a '60 short scale Airline bass. I prefer Fender Jazz now, but I'm drooling at this model & tone.

  • @AndyRespire - Yeah, this one came with rounds... probably just cheaper to use from the factory. But this bass came to life when I put the Thomastiks on. I usually find them too floppy for my taste, but on a short scale, they're just right.

  • That's sexy

  • im lovin the chunk of that E string. :)

  • mosrite basses,mosrite basses

  • I think all of Eastwoods Guitar product came from KOREA.

  • @xhibitionism - Some of it is from China.

  • Sorry, I should have asked this the first time. Is the neck thick front to back? I think of a 55 P being too think for my taste front to back, where as I find a 08-10 P bass very comfortable.

  • @sneha1965 - It's right in the middle. Not super fat, but not thin either.

  • Comment removed

  • How is the feel and profile of the neck?

  • @sneha1965 - I find it very comfortable.

  • I just jizzed.

  • oh awesome demos btw

  • this is the clearest audio you've had in i think any of your vids

  • that metal covers affect the tone?

  • @elpactodejohnson1 - probably not much.

  • I like this one—it's got a warm, room filling sound, plus, it's Canadian!

  • @Desmaad - It's made in China... but Eastwood is a Canadian company.

  • @BassGuitarMag : So if they are made in China, does that justify the insane prices for these?

  • @Crodon - Is $800 insane? Not for a quality bass. Yes, it's Chinese, but it is built exceptionally well. I've had this bass for almost 2 years now and I gig with it quite a bit. This is not a cheap Chinese crap, it's a real bass.

  • @BassGuitarMag : $800 is alot for me, poor student eh :(

  • wow, that's a massive tone, really nice. I can imagine this bass being perfect for a 60's - 70's rock covers band.

  • I have seen a number of your You Tube bass guitar videos. Have you ever done review of the old 70's era Gibson EB-1 reissue violin bass? I like the looks of this short scale bass which seems abit more substantial to say a beattle bass. Thanks.

  • "The West Coast kinda looks like a Les Paul"----LOL

  • Because we all suck, that's why.

  • sorry i didnt mean it in a mean way and of course you dont suck. you wouldnt have that job if you sucked

  • No offense taken.

  • Those "cheesy jazz riffs" go through both low and high notes, making it a very effective and easy way to demonstrate the sound of the bass.

  • calm down you saw that i said i was sorry geez

  • @jessesank Careful, he may crucifiy you...

  • Hello Ed. I've been playing bass for about 3 years with a beginner bass and I definately need a new bass. I've watched tons of your reviews and i was hoping if you could point me to the right direction. I'm still a student so the budget would have to be at about a 1000 euros/dollars. See i'm hoping to get a versatile bass, cause i enjoy alot of different styles, but mainly funk and bluesrock. Just thought i'd ask some advice instead of watching every video :)

  • @saksalainenreika The bass in this vid is a touch over 1000 dollars if you like it!

  • I'm a little annoyed by the fact he plays too quitely. I know that's kinda the point of bass, but I still think you need to hear it, otherwise your not really contributing to the overall sound much.

Bass still looks badass. I'd have it.

  • You have an awesome job!!!!!!

Envy! But it looks like you deserve it

That bass is something special too, an interesting choice

  • Also, are you going to review the EEB and EUB basses? I always wanted to know what one of those sounded like.

Again, thanks for the great reviews.

  • I did review the EEB1 a while ago, search the archives for the Eastwood Classic 4/EEB video.

  • Found it. Thanks for the quick response!

  • First off, I must say that your demos are extremely useful. People seem to forget the scientific method: keep everything the same and change only one variable (playing style, pickup configuration), and honestly, I prefer you repeating the same riffs, as it gets me to understand what the bass sounds like.

So keep doing what you are doing, you are helping me as a bassist and a potential buyer looking at different products. You also are a good player; don't let the haters get to you.

  • Thanks. Hey, I've been doing this stuff long enough not to let 14 year olds off their meds bug me!

  • All those 14 year olds just want to know what's the best bass for metal.

Gotta be this bass or carrots I guess.

    I'll go with carrots.

  • You look very solomn here Ed, smile my friend! :-)

  • Thanks Ed personally I'm not that impressed with the basses but regarding the haters they obviously want you to run the fret board because they have no groove or soul.

  • Well, you can't please everyone. Luckily, I seem to please more people than I don't - so, the occasional hater is really pretty easy to overlook. Considering how I see many people behave on Youtube, I consider myself very lucky!

  • Nice demo. Very helpful. As is everything you post.

  • That is an awesome bass line!

  • In my opinion a demo is not suppose to be entertaining but rather informative. A simple bass line that is repetitive is EXACTLY waht you want to hear so as to make an accurate evaluation. I can't help but wonder...can those who think this was boring play the chordal movement in the second register as demonstrated? I'm guessing not.

  • And you are free to not watch them too. I personally LIKE lame, plunking crap that repeats, so don't bother to watch or comment on my videos anymore. I will base my decisions on the thousands of positive comments I get from viewers, and not one disgruntled hater with bad manners.

  • Sorry, tired plonking MOTOWN style "junk" is my specialty. You'd better start watching someone else's bass reviews. If you want to see someone run chromatic scales up and down the neck, look elsewhere. Thanks!

  • Hey Ed,

Do you think the Lakland 55-02 are worth their price? I mean, it's definitely a good bass, however, at its price, there are hand-fretted US-made instruments... I don't know, how do you feel about it opposed to your sterling, for example?

  • Well, the 55-02 is a great instrument regardless of where it comes from. It's a real Swiss Army knife bass. The Sterling (a little more expensive) is also a killer, and while on the surface you may see similarities... they sound completely different. I own both, and love both. I have long preferred 34" scale basses, so the Sterling sees more use these days. But the 55-02 gets a killer Jazz bass-type tone and has an awesome B string. Win-Win.

  • Well, personally I love both sounds, but I'm too afraid of being stuck with the same Music Man sound range. Since I can only afford one bass, I think I'm buying the 55-02.

    Thanks!

  • The Sterling is a very versatile instrument too, with the series/parallel switch you can get two very distinct characters, and then with the eq... lots more too. If you get an HS or HH model, even more sounds. But they are still different than the 55-02. Once again, for me a big determining factor is the 34" scale.

  • Um... Yeah, maybe the 34" scale wins me, but I don't know, do you the Sterling is able to produce P-bass like sounds also?

  • If you get an HS, the front pickup will get fairly close, though you can still tell it's a MM.

  • cool bass

    great retro sound

  • GBE 1200

  • may I ask what amp you're playing thru?

  • "genz benz"

  • very thorough review. thanks!

  • looks pretty sweet. tho i really dont like those outrageous designs on basses IMO

  • Ed did u ever get a chance to try Eastwood's Club bass?

  • Yes, a student of mine has one. It's nice. There are several inexpensive Club bass clones on the market, some from Hofner.... this one is right in the middle, not the best, not the worst. Certainly good for the money.

  • Are these stock strings?

  • No, I put on Thomastik Jazz Flats. Stock strings are roundwounds, and for my taste... they don't let the bass do what it wants to do.

  • yep love thoose chords Ed,nice work again

  • "big block genuine mother of toilet seat inlays!"

    classic!

  • Another very beautiful video by you on that nice instrument Ed (if I may call you Ed), thanks a lot !

Gotta learn those jazz chords fast you play... can't wait.

  • amazing tone!

  • hey again >.>

Whats a bass that has somewhat this kind of tone for 500$ lol...not being specific in this post...but a more jazzy guitar

  • Check out the Eastwood Classic 4

  • sounds good. almost like a p-bass.

  • Looks alot like Italia instruments...

  • Man seriusly, you rock. Are session musician?

  • Thanks, I've done my share of session work over the years. I'm also a teacher - check out the 20 instructional books I've written for Hal Leonard on my website - edfriedland(dot)com.

  • Are those book available at retailer/bookstore like Popular and Borders?

  • Some might be at Borders, but you can find most of them on Amazon or musicdispatch(dot)com

  • I can easily say that 95% of my slapping skills comes from Ed's excellent DVD, "Slap Bass". Highly recommended!

    Thank you, Ed!!!

  • You're welcome!

  • Kind of Studebaker...

  • Man, that thing looks old-school. lol

  • how much does it cost ?

  • about 800 $

  • Whats the bass in the background?

  • Comment removed

  • the other Eastwood Ed rewied a while ago. i think he bought it. He's a fan :D

  • That is an Eastwood Classic 4, I reviewed it a while back, and yes.... it's mine now. I love it, and play it frequently. Check my channel for the review.

  • Looks like an Eastwood Classic 4 bass. Same company.

  • Where can you buy those Eastwood/Airline Basses in Europe ?

  • is that a short scale?

  • Yes, 30 1/2" scale.

  • Wow it looks and sounds beautiful!!

  • they are great... check out the website and look at in Sea Foam Green... eye candy that plays and sounds great...

    cheers from Toronto

  • what about slap on this bass?

  • See below.

  • I think you should own that thing Ed.

  • Me too!

  • doesn't look like you can sit with it too easily, great bass though.

  • you didnt slap this bass. why?

  • Well, I put flatwound strings on it which tend to not slap that well. This bass could be slapped with rounds on it, but frankly I think that's kind of missing the point of this instrument - just my opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • that thing is as ugly as sin yet some how awesome

  • Lovely stuff!

  • sounds terrific, but i don't dig the body shape. Not that i'm anti-usa, i just like more traditional shapes. :)

is it 34" scale? Looks a bit short.

  • 30 1/2"

  • nice sound ed

  • Is it just me or does the bass looks smaller then other ones?

  • first! nice review ed
