It is the Bernard Purdie half-time shuffle...first do a simple:
RR RR R(RL) RR RR RR R(RL) (etc.)
"(RL)" is the snare/cymbal hit together...as in 4/4, at the start of the measure the snare comes in at the 3rd point - and then at the 4th point afterwards...
Then add grace notes ("g") with your left hand after each RR (to create a triplet sound)...here is the notation:
I am guessing that your question is somehow based upon something connecting to the Jeff Porcaro video (on Rosanna)...either way, I found it somewhat ironic that Porcaro - the person who made this shuffle more popular - explained it in a way that was INCONSISTENT with the shuffle beat itself...(if you read my initial comment on this video) the grace/ghost notes are ADDED to the existing standard shuffle beat..but regardless of how you learn it, playing it correctly is what counts...
I forgot to mention that drummermandan here does not start out including all the grace notes - but he eventually includes all of them as the song goes on...he does a good job...
Yep I certainly can. I played real drums a good 5-6 years before playing an electric. I do use the electronic mainly for practicing these days (as it is always set up and also much quieter!), but I do still play the real thing when I can. Nothing beats acoustic kits, but I do like the electronics as a practicing tool and for recording these vids (as I dont own drum mics or a mixing desk!).
You definately have natural groove , sounds really tight. Just one question , is there an 8th note triplet ghost note missing immediately after the accented snare ?. Another words straight after the accented snare you would ghost an 8th note with same hand.
Very nice groove you have. You nailed it, by the way. Some people here should listen to the original song. There are no ghost notes at all in the beginning, the groove builds up instead. And there's no ride in the bridge!
Thanks dude...well I have tried to play it as close as I could get to the record (well the main groove, the fills are far from perfect). Glad you liked it!
Cheers. True, but that's your preference...what i was mainly doing here was to play (as closely as i could) to what was played on the record...if you notice, he waits until the guitar break/solo (which I would call the middle eight type section) until he switches to the ride...kinda builds up the song and uses the ride sparingly, which in my opinion i prefer. However each to their own.
Groovin baby! Nice, but whack an extra bass drum on beat 3 of the second bar of the two bar phrase (i.e. with the snare hit) to finish the job! Nice work
great ears dude, sorry all of yall there isnt a ghost note at the beginning of the track... a friend of mine is a freelance engineer - and i luckily got to hear the divided tracks from the 5 album... pocaro is crazy-sick - this kid did a great job... keep groovin man!
Hey man !!! I'm a Swiss drumplayer. I'm a real Porcaro's fun, but I'm a fun of you too. How old are you??I've been listening to a few shuffle play around the net those times, but I've to say you're really "in". You don't loose time, you're play is complete but not in an exageration. I really have to practice now cause after hearing you I think I have a job to do :)
Heh heh, umm magic! Nah there was a count in on this backing track I just edited without it as I thought it sounded better....would be pretty hard to just come in perfectly. The shuffle groove is hard to master well, and I personally feel that mine is not perfect yet...just takes time and perseverance!
ahhh yeah i probably should have guessed editing hahaha how fuckin silly of me was tht?? haha yeah damn shuffles!! you seem to have that crap nailed tho tbh good work man
Your feel is really quite good buddy. Your groove "sits back" nicely, if you know what I mean.
Your snare beat placing is just slightly behind the beat, which gives your playing a nice groove. Jeff had that same kind of feel to his playing, as I'm sure you know.
Compared to the other guys on youtube who play along to the Rosanna track, I'd say yours is the best feeling. The others might play the notes more correctly than you do, but you got the better groove.
Hey cheers mate. With this song that was my main aim, to make sure the groove 'rides' well and I'm glad that you think so! There are some inaccuracies (especially with the fills), but this was done a while back now so (hopefully) at this present time I can play this track with less of these.
Would sound better on acoustic though. Dynamics (particularly on the snare) are critical to this groove, and the electronic snare just doesn't cut it (it might actually harm the quality of your play, if you try to compensate for the lacking dynamics).
Hey dude. im sat here with my brother now. thats pretty damn cool. Ive just made a pact with him that if he can play the porcaro shuffle by the time he's 16. ill buy him a new set of cymbals. He's been playin 6 months ish. how long u been playin, and how old r u?
Very good! I enjoyed that very much. That groove is challenging but you looked like you were having fun and that's what it is all about. Keep up the good work.
Hey friend, nice work. Some people on here are so full of crap, picking fault with that. You played it well, it's not easy bin there myself. Just ignore the dicks who say "yeah you missed the ghost note on beat 2+ in bar 56. God they are so up their asses. Bassically it was really good dude. Keep it up
Hey mate, thanks for the comment. Yeah with a song like this which is renound for the drumming groove not many (if any) will pull it off as good as the original (and JP was an ace drummer). If ppl wanna get picky (right or wrong) then fair enough, but I try to do justice to the original. So how long been playing?
Yeah I have an acoustic set, thats what I learnt on mainly as I have only had this electronic for about 2 years (and I have been playing for about 7). However I use this mainly at the moment as less problem for noise.....but I much prefer acoustic sets for sound and feel. (but electronics are a good recording tool)
to learn how to do this beat gradually from a pro teacher, as well as fool in the rain and purdy... google jason horsler and visit his tripod webpage. go to the drumming section, drum lessons with videos and scroll down to SHUFFLE PRIMER.
he´s playing it great, nice work man, and thats how you play the ghost notes, i think its the best version of the rosanna shuffle i have seen on youtube.
Ok enlighten me on how to play ghost strokes then.....I'm not really sure on how else you can play it (apart from playing them quieter maybe), especially when I used the vid of JP explaining the groove when I was learning the song???
The backing track I got from the Rhythm Magazine (published in the UK). It's from quite an old issue, I'm not sure if you can back order but u may be able to find it on the net somewhere.
Thanks. About the beginning if you listen carefully to the track you will notice that the ghost notes are brought in gradually then by 2nd verse it is the full Jeff P groove with all ghost notes. To actually leave out ghost notes and place them in a certain place within the shuffle is actually harder than the full groove, but very effective.
It is the VH11 Roland hi-hat, that is the hardware. If u actually mean the sound I cannot remember but it is a custom sound that I created on the kit.
Well in the UK you can pick them up for around £220-£250. They are not too cheap but considering they can emulate lots of sounds then u could consider it worth the price of real hi-hats. However, on this kit they came with the package.
Very good choice of music and very well played. I must start buying the Rythym magazine again for some grooves to play to. I just try and play over a cd, it doesn't have quite the same effect.
Cheers man. The Rhythm CD is great, and plus there are so many technique workshops each month to help improve your skills. Playing over a CD can be pretty frustrating as I always find that I feel somewhat detatched from the music.
Thanks. Umm the equipment I used here was the Roland VDrums TD12. Very good piece of kit, definately worth purchasing even if you prefer acoustic drums (as i do).

Thanks for the comment. About right hand speed, when I tried this groove for the 1st time my right hand was not naturally very fast, but i just practiced rhythms and especially rudiments slow and work up to faster speeds, using a metronome.
