It's strange that people argue about who was better between T-mac and Penny. In terms of skill, T-Mac is the man, but what most people don't realize is that T-Mac patterned his game after Penny Hardaway. This goes to show how much of an impact Penny Hardaway was able to make on the game during his few years of greatness. Lebron has even stated that Penny Hardaway was one of his favorite players growing up. So I guess it goes without saying that Penny left a legacy behind that many followed.
I understand why you guys compare penny and tracy but prime tmac vs prime penny im with prime tmac come on now 13pts in 35 seconds off the backboard wind mill in games and all the Tmac better than prime kobe drama.
So a streetball type dunk and a once in a career performance is all you need to take into consideration when determining who the better overall player is? That makes alot of sense....
@Fearstrikess I'm telling you Tmac was better. Better shooter better dribbler and better defensive player. Penny couldn't block Lebron and age 32. No one ever said Penny was better than Kobe. But when Tmac was on the magics thats what alot of people thought. Most people looked forward to the Magics vs the Lakers just to see Tmac vs Kobe. The lakers were ranked 1st and the magic like 20th. cmon.
@oldgateway Before getting hurt Penny shot over 50% twice and never below 45% in his first four years. Tmac never shot above 45% when he became a starter. Tmac was definitely the better volume scorer, but better shooter is purely you're opinion. Judging by your arguments I can tell you have no idea what that means, so I understand why you think what you do. Good luck to ya.
So hard to choose. Penny probably had more skills but McGrady was more athletic. The only reason I might give McGrady the edge is pure physical ability. Those blocks on Kobe? Stuff like that is what T-Mac could do that Penny couldn't. I can remember when Artest(in his high scoring All-Star years) tried to answer because McGrady scored on his defense at will, and Mcgrady just jumped up and literally caught Artest's shot in midair. T-Mac in his prime could do pretty much anything he wanted.
T-mac is better at his best he was the best scorer in the nba; he averaged 32 points 6 rebounds and five assists he also for his career averaged 5 rebounds and four assists and thats including the years were he has averaged single digits in points. In penny's prime he was a point forward who was no where near as good as grant hill the other prominent point forward in that period. In his best year he averaged 21 points seven assists and four rebounds. So basically t-mac is better than penny.
@victor1993k stats dont lie dude t-mac was statistically better than penny plus he has more all star game appearances and even led the league in scoring.
@ijoseoa well, if you wanna talk about stats, how many games panny won when he was in orlando, and how many games t-mac won when he was in orlando. yes, thats true, stats dont lie,but you cannt solely reply upon
it. mabury had great stats in early of his career, david lee has great stats, how about them?
@shioew this is the same argument that people use to say that kobe is better than lebron and in that case and in the penny versus t-mac one their wrong if stats aren't that imporant then we might as well call iggy a top 10 player. Defense is a great team concept and winning is imporant two infact those two thing can make a huge diffrence when comparing tw similar players who are close apart, but -mac and penny are such diffrent players that winning doesn't even matter anymore in that case.
@shioew penny was a wannabe point guard who in today's era of point guards wouldn't even be considered a top 5 point guard; infact he would be considered a point forward like lebron except without the scoring ability. Infact haven't u ever thought that even in his prime he was either a poor man scottie pippen or a poor man lebron; while t-mac would beconsidered just as good as kobe and be a top five player in the league. Oh and by the way penny had shaq in orlando and marbury sucked by choice
@ijoseoa Sorry bro but you don't know basketball by saying Grant Hill was better than Penny. Penny was a superior defender, shooter and passer than Hill. Grant Hill was not a very good shooter and his left-hand dribble was weak. Penny gave Jordan and Pippen fits in the mid-90s. What Hill had over Penny was career longevity.
@teacherryen77 yea penny is better than grant hill but not t-mac. With t-man sure penny was better on defense but the great players can both score and have good all around game and penny could pass but he couldn't score plus he was a below average rebounder for his size. If i could compare penny to a former playe is a poor man scottie pippen and a poor man scottie pippen is not better than a guy that once upon a time was considered the shooting guard in the game.
@ijoseoa@ijoseoa Penny Hardaway was actually a great scorer if he wanted to be...But, you're comparing a shooting guard (T-Mac) to a point guard (Penny). Penny was more interested in passing first. T-mac had better hangtime and maybe explosiveness, but defense goes to Penny. I've been watching bball since the early 80s and no one except Kobe has given Jordan a tougher time to guard than Penny. That includes guys like Drexler, Dumars, Starks, Miller, Hill, Fat Lever, and Mitch Richmond.
Had Penny not gotten hurt we would be calling him one of the greats. People forget how dominant he was before the injuries. A 6'8 pg with the ball handling skills of Magic, the scoring ability of Kobe and the athleticism of a young T-mac.
The only reason Penny more of a passer was because he actually had GOOD players to pass it to ... If it was Tmac's case ... he wud have done the same .. He had to do EVERYTHING for his team .. he was puttin up 40 and 50 like it was nothing with also a good amount of dimes .. Honestly i wud take Tmac over penny any day ... he would have COOKED PENNY !!!!
@oidinkdeylikeme You're right he would have cooked Penny....... Dinner like any good bitch is supposed to do!!!
Penny was a better player until the microfracture surgery. Better court vision, just as athletic, better ball handling, better shooter, better assist man and better teammate. The only thing T- mac was better at was failing.
Can't really compare them, they're two different players with 2 diff styles. Penny was more of a facilitator, Tracy was more of a pure scorer. If I had to choose I'd choose a prime Penny over TMac simply for the fact that Penny got everyone involved. For all of T-Mac's efforts he never got out of the 1st round.
everybody speaks of tracy's defense as bad... but he was an incredible defender... he just didn't want to play it for the most of the time (during the regular season)... but do you remember his toronto days? he was a beast in defense. he was one of the best defenders when he wanted to play the defense. remember 05 playoffs against the mavericks? he took the responsibility and played the defense on nowitzki, dirk could do nothing against him.
Both Penny and Tracy were very dynamic, skilled, and very entertaining, it's hard to determine which one is actually better then the other. As far as their careers are concerned, Penny has an edge over Tracy because he's been to finals, and Tracy has not.
its a shame injuries hampered both of these guys...Penny was so smooth could slide by any defender...these guys actually could've played together in Orlando ..wow..with a younger Grant Hill and if Shaq would've stayed.. lookout
T-Mac has the stronger knees but also didn't hit his prime 3 years after his stint with the Raptors. Penny was already up and running one of the youngest and scariest lineups with Shaq, Nick and DScott. But honestly, Penny was a more complete team player in his prime and before his knees really bothered him than T-Mac, who was an impressive volume scorer and hard to match up against, but can never carry the team on his back when it mattered. And Penny as the better numbers on D.
I'm a late 80's baby so I didn't get to Bill Walton play but if he can get into the Hall off of a injury riddled career than Penny definetly should get in
What incredible play! I love him :) His play reminds me more of a point guard and not as a shootin' guard! His completeness was awesome :D Like it or not...
Penny is the best passing SG of all-time. Such a great, and willing passer. McGrady was a more willing scorer, but Penny was a better team player. I've been a Magic fan my whole life, and if i had to choose one it would be Penny.
@Curtis7414 Nah, son. Penny was a much better defender (T-Mac doesn't play defense, for starters) and a much better distributor - he played PG, not SG like T-Mac. Penny in his prime was an all-time great. T-Mac is just a phenomenal scorer, but Penny was an all-round player and winner. Plus, T-Mac never got out of the first round whereas Penny did even without Shaq.
@oluseyidotinfo Yea Penny was slightly a betta deffender eventhough he wasnt a lock down deffender...and if u a point guard u should be able to have more assists then shooting guards...and Penny is not an all-time great how was he? especially when he only like 3 or 4 good seasons
@Curtis7414 "Penny in his prime was an all-time great" means that if we could have extrapolated Penny's prime, he would have been an all-time great. I'm not saying Penny, today, given what we know about how his career turned out, was an all-time great. I'm saying he was of all-time great caliber, if you will.
@Curtis7414 C'mon, son, that's silly. That gives the advantage simply to longevity. That's like saying Eddie Jones was better than Kevin Durant is, because Eddie Jones has more All-Star appearances.
But whatever makes you happy. We use different metrics, so we like different players. That's cool.
@Curtis7414 T-Mac was drafted in '97 and had a steadily progressing career until about '06, when he started getting seriously injured. That's already 10 years, uninterrupted. Penny was drafted in '93 and only played six years for the Magic, during which time he had his first knee injury - I give him 5 years of productivity, max. T-Mac had twice as long operating at the peak of his abilities to make All-Star games as Penny did. That's all I'm saying.
@oluseyidotinfo To be Honest ever since T-Mac was traded from Orlando he wasnt the same player because of injury...so T-Mac goes from 97-2004 which is 7 seasons nd Penny from 93-2000 dats seven seasons
This is laughable because Penny is better hands down. And someone said T-MAC a better defender----LOL BIG TIME. Give me a break T-Mac is very lazy defensively, Penny was a pest Defensively on ball and got in passing lanes with his size and speed. Penny has an overall better game while T-Mac is one dimensional---and thats scoring.
T-Mac was the better individual player and Penny was the better TEAM player... hard to choose who would you want in his prime?? I'll take T-Mac by a nose because it would be scary how deadly Tracy would have been with a big man like Shaq
Penny. He was a 6'6 PG (True Pass First PG which is rare in today's NBA), and alot of people forget he could also score with the best of them (averaged 27 PPG in 1997 until he tore his knee up).
McGrady is a better scorer (and arguably better defender in his earlier days), but Penny is a better faciliatator and more of a team (less about stats) and played more within the offense.
To me T-Mac is more talented, but Penny plays winning basketball and makes his team better so i take him
Poor t-mac.Just like Barkley and Dominique, its hard to get a ring without a good big man.Without Gasol,Kobe would have had some problems getting another ring with the departure of Shaq.
Unlike t-mac,he would have had many mvps as kobe and at least 2 rings if the knee never went. You never know,we could have been hearing about him instead of kobe.He was more complete then kobe too(kobe is now,but had to hear much critism, mature, and work hard to complete his game)some guys just got it.Penny was one of them. When you watch kobe, you see how hard he works and how much better he has become.Penny did his work smooth and effortlessly,a playmaker first, then scorer.
You guys are smoking something REALLY strong!!!!!T-Mac is better hands down. bigger body better shooter and one of the most underrated passer still in the NBA. dont get me wrong i liked penny but T-Mac wins hands down.
Great comparison! T-Mac is overall the better player because he had a rare combination of defense and offensive excellence in talent even though he never displayed it on a consistent level because his body broke down and he was never motivated. T-Mac had the ability to be just as good, if not better than Kobe.
VERY GREAT MIX! I like the intensity of the sound mixed with the great moves of both players. Also I agree that Penny owns Tmac if he hadn't been injured. Penny makes his teammates better while Tmac just scores alot.
Talk about mirror images....... 2 of the many NBA Legends!!! Tracy lived up 2 the Magic's # 1 legacy.... Penny should be proud 4 real!!!! TMac and Penny 4 life!!! X3
there was only 1 player more famous than penny an thats obvious it was jordan.
penny never got to this full potential but i'll tell u this much kobe vs prime penny i'm taking penny.
i like t-mac also but there is nothing like 80's 90's nba basketball the 2 toughest decades in basketball.penny would of been rite there with MJ but those injuries killed his career.TRUELY A SAD STORY...
MJ even said himself if he were to "pass the torch" to anyone it would be my man penny. Just one of the many testaments to his greatness and his unfulfilled potential. Great vid
Penny is # 1!!! one ofthe best player ever played the game!! Damm with no injuries he would have reigned the NBA for ages!!! watching this great video made me feel very happy for seeing again his great plays, but also so sad for what basketball lovers have lost due to those injuries!
@Domini478 so the first four years of a players career determines there overall value as a basketball player? if thats so, kobe is in the same boat as desmond mason..
@Kawnflixx I said 4 years because their was the only years Penny was good...Kobe did accomplish more than Penny in his first four years...Penny ain't got nuthin on Kobe!
tmac is more talented. penny is more skilled and quickthinking, but its scary how alike these two players. both wore #1 on orlando, both averaged at least 20,5, and 5, and both faced injury problems that derailed their careers.
I believe Penny was a better player all around. Penny was one of the smartest players to play the game and he was fun as hell to watch. He had an amazing offense, one that rivaled MJ's back in the day. Penny was also one of the best passers to ever play the game, he did some crazy shit.
First of All they played different positions. Plus Penny had a better team den t-mac in orlando. tmac was more athletic dan penny. Penny was a better passer and could handle the ball better. But overall i give it 2 t-mac in orlando if he had a better squad... i dnt kno wat they could hav achieved
if you,re a mc grady fan you should follow his views in his basketball life he see,s penny as his idol perhaps penny showed tracy a different character in basketball.
I agree with just justtalktome. Penny was a better player with his teamwork, fundamentals, passing and ball handling. The Magic were one of those teams that you loved to watch, Penny could just blow your mind sometimes
Penny was a far better player, hands down, and had the potential to win just as many rings with Shaq (if he had stayed in Orlando) than Kobe did with Shaq in L.A. If not, more.
yea but thank god that what happened to penny didnt happen to kobe and wade. They turned out to be great players. Man penny man, what could have been... i feel sorry for this
This is an incredibly well done mix.
As for the vid, McGrady was the better player, but neither of them had the longevity necessary to be considered HoF players. Shame.

@Curtis7414 LOL. Now you're just moving the goalposts, like T-Mac didn't have any good, ALL-STAR seasons in Houston.
Hey man, take it. T-Mac was better than Penny. Whatever makes you happy :-)

marco197923 1 year ago
This is laughable because Penny is better hands down. And someone said T-MAC a better defender----LOL BIG TIME. Give me a break T-Mac is very lazy defensively, Penny was a pest Defensively on ball and got in passing lanes with his size and speed. Penny has an overall better game while T-Mac is one dimensional---and thats scoring.

@JZ2001JC t mac was kinda the upgraded version of penny but penny was a bit smoother

cursed magic jersey #1 tmac great scorer, penny great passer.. who would dare to use the #1 jersey in magic again
SweSide 1 year ago
T-Mac was the better individual player and Penny was the better TEAM player... hard to choose who would you want in his prime?? I'll take T-Mac by a nose because it would be scary how deadly Tracy would have been with a big man like Shaq

I agree.. Penny, way way better!

Penny Hardaway & Shaq was the only reason I was interested in the magics back in the day.I hope both thier numbers get retired
SkipyOnline 2 years ago

Poor t-mac.Just like Barkley and Dominique, its hard to get a ring without a good big man.Without Gasol,Kobe would have had some problems getting another ring with the departure of Shaq.
dmshoes 2 years ago 3
Penny and Shaq could have got one before they were separated if he stayed healthy but they were young and still in the Jordan Era

ya im sure. btw you can soo win without a dominant big man prime example the pistons

Penny is team players, leader n can be a scorer when team needed, he's a great player!!!
ricoooo9 2 years ago 2
Unlike t-mac,he would have had many mvps as kobe and at least 2 rings if the knee never went. You never know,we could have been hearing about him instead of kobe.He was more complete then kobe too(kobe is now,but had to hear much critism, mature, and work hard to complete his game)some guys just got it.Penny was one of them. When you watch kobe, you see how hard he works and how much better he has become.Penny did his work smooth and effortlessly,a playmaker first, then scorer.
dmshoes 2 years ago
actually T Mac is a good player too
waihong001 2 years ago
And some of these no-look passes that you see hardaway do remind me of kobe passing to gasol with no looks.
rfoster14 2 years ago
You guys are smoking something REALLY strong!!!!!T-Mac is better hands down. bigger body better shooter and one of the most underrated passer still in the NBA. dont get me wrong i liked penny but T-Mac wins hands down.

agreed
redboymax 2 years ago
Great comparison! T-Mac is overall the better player because he had a rare combination of defense and offensive excellence in talent even though he never displayed it on a consistent level because his body broke down and he was never motivated. T-Mac had the ability to be just as good, if not better than Kobe.
pothwei76 2 years ago 5

VERY GREAT MIX! I like the intensity of the sound mixed with the great moves of both players. Also I agree that Penny owns Tmac if he hadn't been injured. Penny makes his teammates better while Tmac just scores alot.
VagrantSoul14 2 years ago
Penny hands down!
Ain´t a fair comparison.
Panny could´ve been one of the top 3 players EVER, yessir EVER!

man pennyz story is sad i was a big penny fan
there was only 1 player more famous than penny an thats obvious it was jordan.
penny never got to this full potential but i'll tell u this much kobe vs prime penny i'm taking penny.
i like t-mac also but there is nothing like 80's 90's nba basketball the 2 toughest decades in basketball.penny would of been rite there with MJ but those injuries killed his career.TRUELY A SAD STORY...
tharealest62qb 2 years ago
penny could've changed the game of basketball as a few players had in the league.

Penny is # 1!!! one ofthe best player ever played the game!! Damm with no injuries he would have reigned the NBA for ages!!! watching this great video made me feel very happy for seeing again his great plays, but also so sad for what basketball lovers have lost due to those injuries!

wleung1oo8 2 years ago
tmac is more talented. penny is more skilled and quickthinking, but its scary how alike these two players. both wore #1 on orlando, both averaged at least 20,5, and 5, and both faced injury problems that derailed their careers.
fourfootthug 2 years ago
i think they have the same career..they had been superstars for a short time,,

T-Mac was better, but Penny was more athletic, T-Mac was a better dunker, but he didn't dunk as often as Penny, when he scored 62 he didn't dunk once
pretzelpimp 2 years ago 2
I believe Penny was a better player all around. Penny was one of the smartest players to play the game and he was fun as hell to watch. He had an amazing offense, one that rivaled MJ's back in the day. Penny was also one of the best passers to ever play the game, he did some crazy shit.

I agree with just justtalktome. Penny was a better player with his teamwork, fundamentals, passing and ball handling. The Magic were one of those teams that you loved to watch, Penny could just blow your mind sometimes
