I see nobody on here listens to hip hop, I heard this on Mad Men also but I just knew it was sampled on a hip hop song and sure enough it was used on the dope ass song "Da Goodness" by Redman ft. Busta Rhymes.
The first time I heard Caravan I was 3 or 4 years-old (it was my grandma's favorite and she played it all the time). After she died I would hear it occassionally in many versions throughout the years. They also played it in Ocean's Eleven and in Ocean's Thirteen; but since I heard it in Mad Men on this jazzy format I fell in love with it again!!
I love the show for the plot but also because they play the music I used to listen during my childhood!!!
Thank you, thank you. A really compelling arrangement of this song, I heard it on Mad Men too. I first thought it might be something from West Side Story, it has a bit of the feel of The Jet Song. Busy, unmistakably urban, and all those great adjectives ferociousgumby used a couple of comments ago. (I unconsciously stole 'compelling,' so credit where credit is due.) :-)
Just watched Mad Men Season 1 and heard this. FABULOUS!!!! Not a huge fan of jazz but this cooks. Something akin to Nelson Riddle's Route 66 in vibe...
One of the strangest, most compelling things I've ever heard. I heard it first on Mad Men, first episode I think, and in many ways it IS Mad Men: that snaking, sultry saxophone with the nervous, anxious, pumped-up strings buzzing around it. In fact I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing. Thanks for this - I never thought I'd track it down!
@ferociousgumby There's a lot of great versions of Caravan out there. I don't know why but it seems I can't post links, but look for versions by Dillie Gillespie and Duke Ellington. They're great!
