  • the best womans singing voice ever. he mom was a piece of work.

  • Agnes is such a F****** witch!! I'm so pissed that a mother could be so disgustingly unfit.

  • karen's mom was such a fucking asshole.

  • poor karen:'(

  • yes she sang this song in one take, that evening she died, i loved all her stuff but this song touched me, and i recorded for me if you want to listen its up to you, im not worthy sing this song, but she was amazing ..

  • Yeah, she might have looked good, but her heart muscle was already affected by the eating disorder. That's why she died, heart failure.

  • What is the name of this song she is singing @3:35? It's beautiful!

  • @nk3219

It's called "Now". I think that was Karen's last recording as well. Done in one take. She was amazing.

  • TOUCHING STORY ,THANKS ~!

  • Karen and Richard Carpenter were a TEAM. One was not better or more important than the other. Both were exceptionally talented people. Even so, Karen's solo projects did not do well, and neither did Richard's. There was that "it" factor in their collective efforts that made them special..

  • Not true ..one thing is for sure ....if it weren't for Karen Richard would have been another wanna be musician in Hollywood.

It wasn't the Carpenters ... It was KAREN.

He had nothing other piano players had . What do yot think he had? Nothing new in ideas. They used other songwriters songs It was HER voice. What do you hear when you listen to the Carpenters . Karen .

  • The brother was a selfish pimp who milked Karen for all the fame he could get out of her. He'd be nothing w/o her. She was the Carpenters. He was a dime a doz. piano player who could be replaced by many, now he has all Karen wished for a spouse, children, a family and her money. Where is the pimp now?He dominated her too.. made her feel like nothing when she was everything.

  • @gacj2010

You have NO Idea what you're talking about. Richard was not a dime a dozen piano player. He is a superb player and he composed, arranged, wrote songs and produced for The Carpenters. Karen had a beautiful voice, but she just sang. She''d be the FIRST person to tell you that without Richard, there would be no Carpenters period. She ADORED Richard. Richard wrote quite a few of the groups hits and if it wasn't for him, we would have never heard "Close To You", "Superstar",etc.

  • @gacj2010

Karen was the singer with the magical, beautiful voice that could never be replaced but Richard WAS the creative genius behind The Carpenters. He did everything else except sing lead. You really have no idea what you're saying. All Carpenters fans know what a pivotal part Richard played and that without him, the group wouldn't even have existed or have been successful. You obviously know nothing about The Carpenters.

  • her mother was a fuck up from day one she chose richard over karen every time . my mother told me she loved me every day even when i messed up . she showed me love also there were 5 kids and never did she feel like making any of us less than the other

  • Yup if the parents could have loved her!! Words are cheap!!

  • this movies clearly shows how important the words ''I LOVE YOU'' to a person...... <3 <3 <3 i love karen carpenter!!!

  • You can bet that Karen sang her little anorexic ass off to pay for the outfit that bitch was wearing in FIRST class when she "flew 3,000 miles for THIS." I'd bet money on that one. For the third time, Agnes (unlike DH) clearly refuses to be supportive of her mentally ill daughter's psychiatric treatment. BOTH parents are not on board.

How dare Mrs. Carpenter offend an internationally known ED psychiatrist fresh out of Harvard. Cannot mention HIS name.

  • i ant gone lie hersongs were nice

    and her brother

  • ... Probably a really dumb question, but when Cynthia Gibb, the actress playing Karen, sings, is it really KC's voice?

I'm assuming it is, but then again, I often hear the advice, "Assume nothing" ...

If anyone knows, I'd love a reply. Thank you in advance, but if not ... no worries ...

    Regards,

    B.

  • @Brooke684 The Karen Carpenter Story is a gem for all fans of The Carpenters. I remember watching it when it first aired on TV in 1989. It's not only a biography of Karen Carpenter (Richard Carpenter was the Executive Producer), but it also includes Carpenters performance recordings using Karen's real voice (Richard Carpenter allowed use of the audio masters). I hope you're as big a fan of Karen Carpenter as I am. We owe a debt of gratitude to EDzMyHomie for uploading it...

  • @sluggoII - Oh, okay! Thank you! She sings like an angel, and her songs are very ... unique, different from today's music, that's for sure!

    Regards,

    B.

  • @sluggoII So 1989 was the first time it aired. That's the first time I ever saw it, and even though it was years later, I became a huge fan of the Carpenters. I dug out my father's old record album of them and I couldn't stop playing their songs. I also think it's a great movie, but I've heard that it isn't very accurate and that Richard Carpenter didn't like it. I don't know if that's true or not.

  • @Brooke684 Cynthia Gibb is lip-synching to Karen Carpenter's voice (though it is Gibb's higher voice at the beginning of the movie).

  • WOULD It cost you anything to tell your daugther that you love her?!?!?!?

Damn what's with this mother?? Did she even care to help Karen or What!

  • My hell woman...just say I love you! Is it really so hard?

  • @JeniBurton213 i know! that pissed me off!

  • miss u karen

  • miss u karen

  • Yes, her mother may have shown she loved Karen, but even if you're not from a family that says "I love you" very often, it certainly doesn't hurt--especially when your daughter is anorexic--to say that you love her. It sounds like Karen's mother marginalized her disease, which never helps.

  • Richard and Karen were the typical brother and sister. He loved her more than he

did himself. He watched out for her, and she loved him with all of her heart. She

was taken much to soon. RIP Karen. With her anorexia finally had a name, but

at what costs. No one can ever duplicate her voice. She was one of a kind. You

    will never be forgotten, never.

  • This story happens to represent in the decay or the deevolution in basic fundamentals just by not telling someone they love them. Sadly, this kind of deevolution has gone further since Karen's passing and I am talking about all of us.

  • there will be no one like Karen Carpenter ever again

  • @robrage2006 I couldn't agree more!!! She was a one-off and a star. There have been many entertainers that have performed over the years but there are only a handful that I call legends. Karen Carpenter is within that handful. God bless you darling and sweet dreams - x - x x x x x

  • The first time i saw this movie...i lost it during "Where Do I Go From Here?" when Karen sang that first note in the chrous...it's a very beautiful song!!!

  • This film, like most is not toally accurate, but you can get how much control and pressure she was under. They show the Psychiatrist working with another Doctor which isn't quite what happened.

  • They didn't stay with the Psychiatrist. This is when Karen was put into the Hospital and the jerk Doctor feed her food by intravenous injection. He put 30lbs on her, which, was way to fast, and her heart could not take that much weight. This was one of the factors that caused her heart to fail. When the GI's, found the death camps and saw how thin the Jews were, they got as much food as they could to feed them. The Doctor arrived and said, it will kill them. Their food intake must be monitored.

  • @ileftbyheartbhind That is so true. I was fortunate enough to meet a Holocaust survivor and he told me how he regained his weight through eating bits of crackers and light foods like that. He couldn't eat heavy meals till two years later. He was so use to the vegan diet that he stuck to it. Anyways it shows that one can't force feed and all things will be back to normal... it takes time.

  • Karen Carpenter gave us three things. A great voice, a great drummer and last she gave her life. I don't look at this as a failure. I love Karen so much that I can say that because of her celebrity death, she opened the door to the awareness of how dangerous anorexia nervosa really is. It sent shock waves to every doctor, parent and young girl the seriousness of this disorder. God bless you Karen for your sacrafice. I am 67 years old, and I never heard of this. Karen would be 60 years old now.

  • This is the last song Karen recorded.

  • These parents are really great!! In contrast, I can't stand the awful parents who abuse their families and use the word "love" to justify their degenerate actions. If more parents were as supportive as they were in their children's talents as the Carpenters, then we would have a smarter population overall. Karen & Richard were both adults when they developed their then unknown addictions & both tried to get help. Richard as we know succeeded and Karen helped us learn about eating disorders.

  • @AMEDINANA

I feel as though it's very obvious these parents love their children. However, trying to control their lives leads to disaster. This is often the case. Karen's mother did not seem to want Karen to succeed based off of this movie, though I don't know the whole story.

  • A nurse who's weighing an eating disordered patient would never shake her head in shame at the patient... that's just stupid, and wrong.

  • @lebloobloo

Keep in mind the disorder was virtually unheard of at this point. They didn't understand how to treat Anorexic patients to maximize their success.

  • I can't believe how selfish her mother is being. Sure, showing you love someone is the ultimate thing to do, but it doesn't hurt to tell them you love them; especially for women. They love hearing it. "We don't need to prove anything to Karen. She knows we love her." What a witch!!

  • In real life, even though it was difficult for Mrs. Carpenter, she still was able to cooperate with the therapist and give Karen a hug.

  • god, her fucking mother. i can't help but comment on her.

karen was so amazing, her singing is incredible.

  • the mother. was such. a douche.

  • Imagine hearing from your mother that your choice of recovery treatment is "nonsense."

  • If my mother did this to me, i'd just want to waste away... whatta bitch.

  • The only constancy and support she had in her whole life was her brother. I'm sure her parents loved her but they weren't supportive of *her* as a person, or demonstrative and she so needed that.

  • @ktscarlett66 In real life, her father was very sweet and gentle and loved Karen very much. Unfortunately, Agnes "wore the pants" in the family.

  • ty Ed for this :)

  • Back in those days.. Some parents didn't know how to say , I Love You .. They just assumed

  • @kat5ft2 Some of them don't know how to do it now, either..

  • The last song she ever recorded 4:17 Now

  • Comment removed

  • I really fell in love with that voice. She also seemed like "the girl next door", so to speak. Really grounded, but suffering inside. I just can't watch the videos much any more. Just makes me really sad. Such a loss. What a price she paid, to say the very least. At least her music will live on. Had she survived the Anorexia Nervosa, she would have never gone out of "style". Her talent would have been popular in these days. Not worded well, but I think I get my point across.

  • I've never heard my mom tell me she loves me.. :(

  • I am so sorry

  • What a gorgeous song!

  • Her mother is not retarded, she is the sort of person that she does'nt like opening her mouth, she do action which is much better than saying the word "I Love You." A lot of people can say easily to the word love but they never meant it. Karen's mother love her that is why she is over protective of her. Those people who judge Karen's mother I would love to see them what they are like to there children when they become a mother.

  • @brimcp TRUST ME.....three years of therapy have proved to me that you definitely need to HEAR the specific words...I LOVE YOU from those who do. Actions are important, too. You need both. When parents give children toys because they 'Love" them...all the child sees is a toy. Love is not an intelllectual exercise it need to be felt through hugs, words and actions.

  • @lcowles I'm sorry of what you've expereince. I'm one of the luckiest daughter in the world because my parent love me very much especially my mother, I know that she will give her life for me. I'm proud to say that I have the best mother in the world, she is always there for me. My parent does'nt say the world I Love You oftenly but I am abundant in the hug and kisses especially from my mom. I'm sorry again but I don't have any right to judge your parent because I don't know them. Take care.

  • EURGHGHGHGHGH! THAT MOTHER IS SO....!!!!

She acts like telling her daughter that she loves her is like her arm is breaking!

    I feel for Karen. :(

  • Gah i know Right?! D:<

    What a whore ,://

  • Karen's mother could easily be my mother. I am to be 25 this Chistmas and neighter her nor my father has ever told me that they love me. Only my brother and sister. I don't think they do actually

  • @sumle85 im sorry to hear that =(

  • That's not Karen's voice, is it?

  • No kidding, the great James Hong makes an entrance at 2:09?!?! This guys in everything from "Blade Runner" to "Airplane" to "Wayne's World" and now, "The Karen Carpenter Story!" Thanks for posting this.

  • Cynthia did a beautiful job as Karen.

  • all her mother had to do was tell her 'i love you.'

why won't she? it could just have saved her life if she did. and what would they lose if they told her those?

  • the part where she drums on the EKG is heart breaking.

way to crush someone's spirit ED. :(

  • I think when she and Rich were in the studio... I get the feeling that those tears were real on the face of the guy who played Richard... I cry whenever I hear it too... I sure miss her....

  • If this movie was never made I don't think ED's would have been raised up so much and I don't think people suffering would of had the courage to turn for help. Maybe not so many of the younger generation of today are into the Carpenters but at least their parent's can say to their children "She died of Anorexia" and explain what it is

  • Thank God something good came from this story. Public in general is much more aware of Anorexia Nervosa and lives have been saved because of this awareness, so she didn't die in vain at least.

  • what was the name of that song she sang?

  • In the studio? it's called "Now" from Voice of the Heart.

  • "Now". It was the last song she recorded

  • my friend has annerexia n shes in the pryory atm but its gone on for like 2 yrs, n b4 she went into the pryory she really reminded me of Karen and my mum says the same thing. its sad but shes getting better now eventually.

  • the mother was a nut case id send her ass to a home and leave her there she was a witch !

  • Wow, I can`t believe how much Cynthia Gibb actually looks like Karen here, at 1:10 and for that few seconds - I was really seeing Karen.

    RIP, dear woman.

  • It makes a difference if they actually say the words I love you and hug you and etc. I know deep down that my parents care about me, but sometimes I feel like they dont because they don't know me very well and they arent affectionate. And I have an ED.

  • her mother is such a bitch

  • shes not really, agnes just came from a different generation where touchy feely was'nt the norm. You have to look deeper and not at the superficial.

  • God I hate her Mother! What a stubborn woman!

  • My 16 year old son and I say I Love You to each other every day. I remember watching this movie when it first aired when I was a junior in high school. Great movie.

  • Mom and I say I love you all the time and it makes our relationship stronger because we know that as long as we love each other we can go through anything together...its nice to know you're loved.

  • If you love you kids...would it be so hard to say once in a while " i love you"

Maybe if she had of heard the song "iIf Tomorrow Never Comes" she may have said it a lot more often

  • that maybe so, but if your child was mentally ill, and three simple words could helps her... wouldn't you say it then?

as a sufferer i can see how Karen felt at this time.. the doctor isn't saying "well you didn't say you loved her, therefore she's ill" he's merely saying.. with a little bit more love in Karens life, she might have began to love herself, as others did.

    good movie!

  • I don't think Karen actually doubted whether her family loved her or not, she knew they did, they seemed pretty affectionate in This is your Life.

We all have to accept things about ourselves that we are not crazy about, maybe it was harder for her because she was a world class star with such a rare voice.

  • @fadeawayobsession

    No, she wouldn't.

Hear from your parents they love you because a doctor asked them to say it doesn't make it real. It just appears as they did it to not look like bad parents. But it doesn't help to feel more loved.

And this doctor is stupid. Not all the people suffering from anorexia lack of love.

  • Is Karen's real mother still alive?

  • I think Mrs Carpenter died in 1994.. :-(

  • Mrs. Carpenter died in 1996

  • I watched this film with tears in my eyes the entire time. It's just too sad, & yet--very well done. Cynthia Gibb was fantastic. Wolfsky9

  • Her mother can't even say, I love you? What is wrong with her?

  • She's a bitch! I hope that was just 4 dramatic effect and her mom aint really an ass like that!

  • She might have had less than sympathetic parents herself. parents tend to raise their kids with what they know. The Carpenter family was a complicated one.

  • Eating enough after such a long time starving herself unfortunately helped cause the cardiac arrest which was the cause of her death.

  • The toll of NOT eating finally caught up with her, even though she began eating again. Can't reverse it sometimes.

  • That,s true and people have also been saying that the doctors in the early 80,s didn,t do the treatment properly but not being a doctor myself I wouldn,t really know if her doctors did things correctly or not.Electrolyte imbalances might be waht its called that caused the cardiac arrest

  • The actress seems to have lost a lot of weight to play Karen and that seems a bit wrong to me or maybe its a camera trick.

  • You don't know what your talking about.. Speaking as a recovered anorexic and bulimic I can tell you that the family dymanics involved with someone that is dealing with or has delt with an eating disorder. My father was alot like Karen's mother he too didn't want to see that I had a problem untill my grandfather told him that he thought I was making myself sick..Not to mention my best friend calling him and more or less saying the same thing...

  • you are one true and genuine artist. You are a legend in the music industry.RIP karen

  • They should have talked about Karen's effort to do a solo album more

  • She died in February not November. . . .

  • Her mom really is a bitch! I guess she did'nt love her daughter enough to rise above her own self!!!

  • It's sad that when the name Karen Carpenter is brought up we tend to go in depth about how she died. I guess the word anorexia nervosa will always be synonymous with Karen. She was the one that opened the eyes of America about this horrible disorder.....but when the name Karen Carpenter is brought up, I'd rather talk about how this beautiful soul lived and through her short time with us, how she made life that much sweeter.

RIP Karen we all miss you!

  • @roboeclipse I couldn't agree with you more I was trying to find information on the subject and her named kept popping up . She was a talented singer and drummer and all i could come up with was her eating disorder.

  • the mothers a retard, who doesn't tell their child that they love them...i know that I'm gona tell my son and daughters how much I love them

  • @lildixie88 i know. the mom is stupid no offense.

  • @lildixie88 IK...but sadly there are families who are like that...:(

  • @lildixie88 Both my parents never told me they love me. But we have a wonderful relationship. Just because someone does not say they love you does not mean it is not so. It all depends on the relationship and depends on how the family is and works.

  • @mustange550

I crave the vocalization. I need to hear it as well as see it. Most are that way...

  • @NightimeNecrosis Everyone is different. In certain situations you don't have to say it to know it or convey it. Actions speak louder then words. Not saying I don't do it when the time is right, but guess I just do it less then the average person. Does not making me a bad person or love any less.. ;)

  • @lildixie88 I don't mean to criticize you but don't call the mother a "retard." Yes, she's a fool and a complete moron. But calling her a retard is a mega insult to the people who really are mentally disabled. It's also inaccurate because it's the mentally retarded, more than anybody else, who are very warm and loving and who have no trouble with giving love or expressing their feelings.

  • @lildixie88 my dad never told us that he loved us, not until a week before he died, even told me he was proud of me which threw me for a loop. Hearing my dad tell me that was really hard on me, because he never said it before.

  • @lildixie88 i know that is very odd to me, but i have met other families that are like that. i never understood it.

  • The only good thing to come out of this movie is some unreleased Carpenter material. Cynthia Gibb and Mitchell Anderson spoke of Carpenter's family oversight of filming. The end result is bad wigs and a white-washed story. Richard's collapse is greatly exaggerated even by his own admission and Karen's solo effort with Phil Ramone (a key period in Karen's life) is never even addressed.

  • I adore Karen Carpenter. It's sad to think this was the last time she would tell her parents good night.

  • god there's so much tension at that meal except for karen she did in reality have a great sense of humour

  • Are you believing this video to be the truth?

  • no definately not

  • Some of it. The book about her is much better and more detailed about her eating habits and exercise routine and such. The book is much better.

  • maybe her eating habits and exercise routine should not be made public because it could give girls and young women 'tips' in how to diet to excess.

  • They can learn tips from about every magazine in stands, TV, and the Internet so I don't think it'll make a differences.

  • That is true but since Karen Carpenter starved herself to the point of being a skeleton-it just seems to me that the way that she 'dieted' was more extreme that the other stravation diets that are in irresponsible magazines,tv and internet sites. But yes you,re quite right.

  • LeanaHM76 which book are you talking about?

  • It's called "The Carpenters". I think it came out in the early 1990's. It's like a light brown cover, very thick, and has Karen and Richard on the cover (Karen is waving in the pic). It was a while back when I read it. My library has this book.

  • The Carpenters: The Untold Story by Ray Colman...

  • It's so hard to hear the song "Now" today, on feb 4th, 26 years since Karen's passing. The last song she ever recorded. But it helps us remember them. Always, especially Karen. May she rest in Peace. I look forward to holding her in Heaven +

  • What's this song called. The one that starts with Autumn Days.

  • It's called "Where do I go from Here." Off the "Lovelines Album" (c) 1989

  • eve

  • @shoponline831 It's called "Where Do I Go From Here".

  • 44636624 - The name of the song U seek is called:

    EVE

you can find in the carpenters collection cd box, in cd number 1

    : ) heheh

    Camila

  • I love this movie!

  • awesome video!

  • she still have the horrible anorexia...is so sad!!!

  • I was wondering didnt she try to get better in the real life towards the end of her life

  • I love the song, Now. I think it is the best song she ever sang. Certainly the most beautiful.

  • Karen nearly died while in New York City; having become dizzy and unable to walk, with an irregular heartbeat, she was admitted to a hospital in Manhattan with low blood potassium and weighing 77 pounds. Eight weeks of intravenous feeding raised her weight to 108 pounds.

  • I never knew that thanks

  • I would never get tired of watching her life story.I really miss her and i wish she was still alive at this time..rip ms.karen ann carpenter

  • im teary eyed

  • The response of the mother was by no means helpful. Would it have been so hard for her to say what the doctor suggested? If her daughter's life may have depended upon it? Who knows what difference it might have made.

  • I agree with you! It's not hard to say I love you to someone especially ur own kid!!!

  • hi! my name is edward i'm from argentina. can you tell me the name of one song ?i mean the song that karen is singing at the studio on video # 3. before the winter comes, can be ?

  • that song is called "Eve" and it can be found on the "Ticket To Ride" album.

  • maybe in the parent's time saying i love you wasn't a big thing, maybe to them saying i love you meant a different point of view. just a theory

  • i know i would have slapped the mom if i was there. she could've said i want to let you know that we really care about you and we love you

  • Agnes Carpenter was such an old dittybag, she killed her daughter the same as if she'd shot her with a gun.

  • I wish Karen would eat more so she sill was alive today

  • Not to be rude but I think my grandmother had a dress just like that green one.

  • it seems to me that it was not important for her to tell Karen how much she love her...

it was indeed upsetting for me..

  • I wonder how Karen felt when she heard her mom said that they travel three thousand miles just for a nonsense,..

  • GREAT I FINALLY FOUND THIS!! THANKYOU

I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SUBSCRIBE CAN SOME ONE FILL ME IN

Wasn't karen's doctor Steven Levenkron MD the one who wrote "the best little girl in the world"

i thought i remember reading this, i read her book but it was many years back

great book/and the movie wasn't bad either (it is on you tube for those who do not know)

i saw this years ago so i barely remember it - great it will be almost like watching it the 1st time

  • Success is good, but people look at them and think they have it all together but they don't.They have problems like all of us, we need to see that and not think they are different. I love the music they play and will for along time. We need to tell the one's close to us how much we love them especially our children.

  • Did Karen Carpenter actually get treatment for anorexia nervosa?

  • Yes. Karen was treated by psychologist Steven Levenkron in New York City.

  • Ah ok. Thanks for replying. Although I'm not sure how happy I'd be to be treated by Steven Levenkron lol... not a big fan of his work. But at least she had someone I suppose.

  • People need to realize that Ipecac syrup is toxic to the heart; that's why it should be used only in extreme emergencies.

  • it should be by prescription only
