A mate of mine was in the observer corps where they monitored stuff like radiation from nuclear fallout etc and mentioned seeing pilots sleeping in tents next to their aircraft when things really got tense like the cuban missile crisis. Apparently they had the weapons on board and all they needed was a pilot so they could take off within ten to fifteen minutes.
On that note I just watched Nuclear 911 which is a documentary by the guys that made Trinity and Beyond and it details all the Broken Arrows or nuclear mishaps. 6 nukes are still missing to this day! Most of the accidents involved planes and some were really scary.

The RAF was not losing the BoB when the Germans were concentrating on the airfields. The Germans did not come close to achieving air superiority, their bombers were intercepted & attacked everytime they crossed the channel. 11 Group did not have to abandon ONE airfield, the bomb craters were filled in very quickly & the intranet system associated with our air defence system meant the system NEVER ceased to function effectively. The major issue & LESSON LEARNT, was the importance of carrying out covert beach recce's by SF. During the Battle for France in 1940, the BEF was forced to withdraw PRIMARILY because the Belgiums on the northern flank folded, whilst the French on the southern flank crumbled. This left the BEF exposed to encirclement, Gort was absolutely right to order the withdrawal, else the BEF would have been captured. Omaha was a nightmare for a number of reasons. Firstly, some dimwit US officer decided to deploy the duplex drive Sherman tanks a full TWELVE miles off the coast line. Everyone of the 28 tanks sank & drowned their crews. That meant no tank support. Secondly, the USAF failed to land ONE bomb on the beach- therefore there were no craters for the inf to shelter in. So much for precision daylight bombing....The 352nd Inf were on a defensive Ex sat in their bunkers tooled up & ready to go. FUBAR.

P47 was not in the same league as an air superiority fighter as the Spitfire. P 47 was fast, powerful & flew handled like a pair of underpants in a washing machine compared to the agile Spitfire. The P-47 found it's niche as a fighter-bomber, with the emphasis on the 'bomber' ie ground attack/support. A P47 would be embarassed in close combat by a Spit with regard to agility, rate of roll etc. P 47 would NOT outdive a MK XIV Spit either, which had very similar power output. Wrong again hey!

A mate of mine was in the observer corps where they monitored stuff like radiation from nuclear fallout etc and mentioned seeing pilots sleeping in tents next to their aircraft when things really got tense like the cuban missile crisis. Apparently they had the weapons on board and all they needed was a pilot so they could take off within ten to fifteen minutes.

I went to the first show when it flew again after 14 years, i was one of the thousands of people.
The RIAT 2009 fairford airshow was cool everyone went silent once again.
The concord was based on the vulcan (or the other way round) thats why they look so much like each other.

@transdrole The might be called the same, but surely very different. I don't think the Vulcan had afterburners, and it was subsonic (dunno whether it ever broke the sound barrier in a dive; I think the Victor did, if I remember correctly). The engines in the Concorde were much more powerful.

The RAF was not losing the BoB when the Germans were concentrating on the airfields. The Germans did not come close to achieving air superiority, their bombers were intercepted & attacked everytime they crossed the channel. 11 Group did not have to abandon ONE airfield, the bomb craters were filled in very quickly & the intranet system associated with our air defence system meant the system NEVER ceased to function effectively. Utter BS-as usual from an ignorant Yank with a flapping mouth... :)

Hardly idiotic, the premise was to test the defences of the Atlantic wall. The concept of the operation was sound. The major issue & LESSON LEARNT, was the importance of carrying out covert beach recce's by SF. The only issue at Dieppe was the nature of the beach that prevented the armour from deploying- that is what the primary issue was. Lessons were learnt & carried forward to D-Day. Perhaps you would like to discuss the Commando raid on St Nazairre-recognised as the Greatest Raid of all? lol

The US forces were completely complacent pre-Bulge, senior US cmdrs ignored repeated warnings from Montgomery who told them that the Germans were "far too quiet & clearly upto something." Lazy arrogant Yanks assumed the Germans were near finished & the war was practically over. Golden rule of war- NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE YOUR ENEMY. The Germans did not fail at Bastogne, the latter was NOT a VITAL strategic objective. When they met resistance, they did what any professional army would do, they put a holding force around the place & their main force rolled on towards the Meuse River-the KEY VITAL OBJECTIVE. British XXX Corps stopped their advance. The significance of BT was completely over blown as a propaganda exercise to help lessen the disasterous humiliation that the Germans inflicted on the US army. You haven't a clue!

Bastogne was NOT the VITAL objective at all you idiot. The key objective from the German perspective was the port of Antwerp. Their aim was to capture it, sever the allies supply line & split the US & British armies. Bastogne was a side issue. The failure to capture it was not an issue for the Germans who continued with their main effort towards the Meuse river. Once again.....you are completely WRONG.

You need to educate yourself as a matter of priority. During the Battle for France in 1940, the BEF was forced to withdraw PRIMARILY because the Belgiums on the northern flank folded, whilst the French on the southern flank crumbled. This left the BEF exposed to encirclement, Gort was absolutely right to order the withdrawal, else the BEF would have been captured. Omaha was a nightmare for a number of reasons. Firstly, some dimwit US officer decided to deploy the duplex drive Sherman tanks a full TWELVE miles off the coast line. Everyone of the 28 tanks sank & drowned their crews. That meant no tank support. Secondly, the USAF failed to land ONE bomb on the beach- therefore there were no craters for the inf to shelter in. So much for precision daylight bombing....The 352nd Inf were on a defensive Ex sat in their bunkers tooled up & ready to go. FUBAR.

P47 was not in the same league as an air superiority fighter as the Spitfire. P 47 was fast, powerful & flew handled like a pair of underpants in a washing machine compared to the agile Spitfire. The P-47 found it's niche as a fighter-bomber, with the emphasis on the 'bomber' ie ground attack/support. A P47 would be embarassed in close combat by a Spit with regard to agility, rate of roll etc. P 47 would NOT outdive a MK XIV Spit either, which had very similar power output. Wrong again hey!

They became obselete overnight when Russia shot down Gary Powers in his U2. Prior to that, the belief was that a fast bomber at very high altitude could not be intercepted- WRONG. Yeah right! You are full of shit. So you don't have the brains to realise that the training style is somewhat altered & watered down when TV camera's are around??! When you have troops who can fight a Falklands war campaign 8,000 miles from home, outnumbered 3:1, living in the field for weeks & haulling huge weight on their backs across horrendous terrain-then fight a bayonet battle at the end of it, please do get back to me. US troops will not fight unless they have overwhelming fire support.
