This song expresses our struggle w/ false divides between Male/Female Nature/Technology Material/Spiritual - mistakenly called "The War of Good vs Evil" w/labels changing contextually. Patriarchal religion calls Women & Material Reality "evil" (Hence: Eve & Maat). Pagans cry foul on Materialism, "Male" Aggression and any Spiritual idea that makes mortal life an agony. The lost balance is: Yin-Yang/Sun-Moon/Chalice-Blade (BTW, Bowie=Blade :-). "Sympathy for the Devil" struggles w/ this as well.
The original O Superman by Laurie Anderson is a New Wave/Avant-garde Performance Art icon and masterpiece. If you don’t like the original, you probably don’t even know what Performance Art is, who Laurie is, and you probably don't know that it was part of Laurie’s monumental 2-3 day performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1983. If you weren’t there when O Superman came out in 1981 and can’t appreciate the unmitigated GENIUS that it STILL IS, more’s the pity, and your loss.
@pmc40 You know why no one at your pub likes it? because it's a PUB! What reason would pub goers want to listen to that song? And yes you're right... No one likes the original because you've obviously asked the entire world and they all elected you to be their spokes person. Quit trolling cause you look like an idiot. Why would you say that? You never asked me if I liked it. That being said this is a good version and I like it just as much even though it's completely different.
wish ther was a single release of this , no one likes the original by laurie anderson when i play it on any jukebox in my local pubs n one of them actually had it taken off lol
WOW! What a great cover of one of my all time favorite works by Laurie Anderson. I'm sure she would be pleased. David and Gail Ann Dorsey did a great interpretation.
WOW. I heard the original today on NPR...had heard it many times before. I love Laurie Andersons work....but this blows me away. They are both sooo beautiful. I have no words! Thank you!
The original is one of the most compelling things I've ever heard, but this cover is good. A great repackaging of a pretty darn difficult song. Gail sings it very well.
the original recorded performance by Laurie Anderson is amazing. Does not surprise me that Bowie is covering this. a welcome surprise to me with overlapping interests.
Thanks so much for posting this beautiful and compelling video, as always, David Bowie and Gail Ann Dorsey make magic together. (and the part where he throws the paper airplanes, so cute, I love it ) There is a Super Man and his name is David Robert Jones. : )
This is great, and by far not boring. It is built up very well. To me the nine and a half minutes seem like ony three. Gail Ann and David are doing a great job with this cover.
@MrJuno6 Why would you say the original is crap? Obviously Bowie even likes it or he would not be covering it. To say the original is crap is the same as degrading Bowie's reason for covering it.
@Worldslargest349 I concur. Laurie Anderson's rendition is pretty hard to eclipse. I have to admit, though, this version is very danceable. By the way, have a super day! Okay?
In the first part it's obviously inferior to Laurie's version, but when the drum'n'bass kicks in, it adds the song an added dimension. Granted, the song doesn't need it, but the purpose of remixes and reworks IS change, right?
Show could be almost anywhere, but I do remember seeing the stop in San Francisco in September '97. One of the best shows I've seen EVER. Went both nights and I've been to about 1000 concerts. This ranks!
Yep, I think they performed it consistently during the Earthling tour. At least they did it both nights in Detroit. Those were some truly fantastic shows.
original is the best! but this cover is BOWIE!2nf best!!!! nothing more to say!!!! thx all be nice ne kind be fair!

I don't like the ay she sings this, of course she's a great singer, but she took away the outwordly atmosphere of the original.

The original of this is shite. It's David and his band who are making it sound musical.

Laurie Anderson's version is tough to beat because it's the original, but this comes pretty close, especially with Dorsey's vocals
