" Why is a raven like a writing desk? " ; " I haven't the slightest idea. " Pretty much what it came down to in understanding the ending. LOL. Though I loved every minute of it.
Alan Wake is a writer. He went to the island in order to ... rest and unblock his writer's block. Now, I have a feeling, that this whole adventure was his attempt to write a story, The darkness representing his writer's block, and his defeating of the darkness was his way into the light. For example, when he used his flashlight, which was considered in his pencil or pen or his creative mind, was shining on the words and the words became objects when the so called flashlight shown on it. A writer
Just finished the game on the PC, and this is no doubt one of the best game IMO. Got immerse into the story for awhile, kind of like watching a movie. Can't wait for the next series.
this game is just about running in the woods while coming across story elements. Nothing to think about just run in a linear forest through some barns and fight some darkness monster. Kinda repetitive to me.I don't understand what was the hype about. This game is overrated.
No in the end Rose has the light from the ol lady, now she is the creazy lady and nightingale is now in the place of barbara jagger, the story is meaking a circle. Now Alan Is like Thomas Zane, Alan in this movie told that everything has its price, mr. scratch will be liwing his life... sory for my bad english .. love the game if anyone finish it on nightmare tell me if there is another movie in the ending
as i see it,dark presence still lives through nightingale, who is still in control of rose( 6:12,you can see nightingale in dark),and we will have an sequel..
this game was the final battle with pure darkness....I thought the ultimate fight was Alone in the dark:the new nightmare....but I was proven wrong...I think we will never see something like this ever again
@matmanxify Shutter Island? Mind-blowing? You obviously haven't seen The Sixth Sense. Scorsese is a great director, but SI is deffinayely not one of his best.
@dddrrmm ofc i saw the Sixth Sense but you gotta understand when i went to see Shutter Island in the movie with my gf it was a last minute i didnt know what to expect, thought it was some kind of cop thriller the ending blew me away more then the Sixth Sense or Fight Club for that matter. I would recommend seeing as you have a taste for good cinema a movie "The secret in their eyes" Its Argentinian and very good. But lets face it Alan Wake ending is a very weak clifhanger. Ciao
This game was the best game i´ve ever played, when i end it i saw how this game is good in all parts, the end, the story, and the suspense, and now i'm waiting the Alan Wake 2.
I understand everything, but not only one thing, why he said that ''It's not a lake it's an ocean.'' Did he want to hurt other people too? Someone reply please.
This is very real. Not so much the OverNatural things, but the thing is that now a lot of people sacrifices themself to save the country they love, or the people they love, and no-one rembers then. They like that f*ck of Justin bieber and they cant remember the good people that give their lifes for the things they loved.
@DGGameplaysHD he set here free by killing himself in the novel, well, actually he placed the island with him in the middle of the ocean so shadows cant hurt anyone anymore
@Mudoglav well not true , what about alan wake american nightmare , still he said its not an lake its an ocean like if he figured out it was not just the lake but much greater. also the second possibility could be if you hear his voice when he said its an ocean with a dark weird voice like if the darkness was still there and made him write it to get stronger like the old lady darkness did controlling him
Fucking monster system requirements destroyed full joyness of playing this game. With Intel E5700 3.0GHZ,ATI Radeon 4650 HD,4GB RAM memory I couldn't play it smoothly even on the lowest performance...
@BallerSkier Definitely one of the better games since Half Life 2... Its been a couple days since I beat the game and I'm still having my own theories as to how it really ends. Great game!!
I like that ending. It's not the typical "oh, everything's gonna be fine" - and also doesn't say that Alan is not going to come back either. Who knows what will come up.
.......AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH, i hate this bullshit. It's fine if a game confuses the shit out of you till the very end, it can actualy make it better, but thats when all the pieces should fall into place, there is a big reveal moment, and you look back and go oooooohhhhhh i get it now. But this shit made no sence right up to the end and even less after the ending.
Best game ever created in the history of gaming! And the best ending to a game! It's so ingenious and mind-bending but makes sense when analyzed. Love Alan wake!
@UltraViolentGamer read the "alan wake files" guys, there are interviews with people after this, rose is gone slightly mad, she is the new lamp lady, waiting for the second game i guess.
Alan say's it at the begging: "In a horror story the victim keeps asking "why." But there isn't an explanation and there shouldn't be one; the unanswered mystery is what sticks with us the longest." So there is no right or wrong. Only imagination.
Alan Wake says: "It's not a lake, it's an ocean". That's the key to the sequel. Meaning the Dark Presence is more powerful than he thought, much bigger. He is writing something new, called "Departure" (To save Alice and himself). He already wrote the whole story at the beginning when he was controlled by the Dark Presence and then saved by Thomas Zane. Also, there must be something with the dots when Alice says "Alan, wake up" because if you look, Alan presses the "dot" at the end (6:18).
@charsens81 Read my comment carefully before blowing up geez, I said wait Till Alan wake 2 not till the end. And if you actually do your research the Alan wake 2 story line is up and it explains everything. It's people like you that crack me up, not doing research and reading or not understand stuff and your quick to answer. Next time try thinking before commenting seriously man.
Oh yeah one more thing, If Bright Falls is supposed to be a stranded island then how the heck did Alan get there? Even if it did turn "Stranded" after he got there you also gotta remember that Barry came way after he got there also.
This game is amazingly brilliant and way different from your usual 360 game play. The whole concept of the game is well thought of and creative. And if you don't understand the ending well just wait till Alan wake 2 you'll be like " ahhh I see now."
I love Alan Wake, i read the book loads an wen i got the game it was by far the greatest cliffhanging piece of epicness evr to be played on my xbox an OMG Agent Nightingale
@XvXNutLesSUnclEXvX Basically a famous writer is brought on vacation to a small town by his wife, but she is captured that night. Alan Wakes up a week later and fights possessed men of the town and finds manuscript pages about a novel he has never written, but it's titled in his name. And the pages he reads are coming true. He discovers that the same thing happened to a poet and his wife, who suffered the same fate. The lake makes an artist's work come true. The poet's wife is the lady in black
@XvXNutLesSUnclEXvX What do you mean? If you mean the story is terrible, than you have no taste what so ever... Besides, there is way more to the story than what I wrote. Just play it.
@Thomasveach95 No you got me all wrong the story is great best horror survival game ive played so far its just the story is sad, him and his wife,ya'know. :(
@gumcom If Bright Falls was an island, it must be a hell of a big island (you know, one that supports multiple highways, large parks and foresting areas, a monstrous mountain range, a sizeable agriculture, thousands of inhabitants, etc).
There is no reason that it should be an island; and it looks pretty connected to me though.
An island doesn't have to be small. And that's the mystery. How did Bright Falls become an island? Maybe after Alan got there, it's been completely cut off from the world. Like Silent Hill.
@gumcom But its not cut off! That's my whole point.
As you can see by the sheer amount of stranded cars and empty houses which can be seen every night after every darkness attack, you can see how many people live there. You can clearly see how burstingly full it is at day time! It is even said once how many people would come to that deer fest from outside the town.
What Alan said at the end is definitely meant metaphorical (it would sound stupid of him to state the painfully obvious).
You're not supposed to take everything literally. Especially not Alan Wake (which is kind of the point of the game's philospohy, it's a metaphor in a metaphor. A meta-metaphor, if you will).
@gumcom Nope. I sure as hell did not. That doesn't change a thing. By "It's an ocean," it is implied that the story he is writing is much deeper than previously thought. The story has a mind of it's own. (Just like all stories do... well-written stories anyway.) So he must delve deeper into the story and keep writing until it is certain that it can be concluded. That's what he means by "It's an ocean."
@FailHazard And that's how you interpret it. Not how exactly the makers intended it to be. No one knows how it was intended other than the makers. unless you can get an interview to the makers of the game, you dont have any valid argument.
@gumcom If Couldron Lake were an ocean, it would be just a few thousand times bigger. An "ocean" is a very large body of water, such as the pacific or the atlantic. Cauldron lake is an oversized pond in a volcano crater.
He probably mean that Cauldron Lake was an ocean inside (such as in an ocean of other people's thoughts and motivations, of writers' fantasies and written universes). He means that people call it a lake without noticing its vast dark secret (no pun intended).
Before Alan finish Barbara Jagger, she says clearly that she's much older than him, and that she'll find the way to come back. If we remember, there's two people who were touched by the darkness and who Alan didn't killed; in fact, these two people appear with an cold and dark expression in their faces at the end of the game: Rose Marigold and Robert Nigthingale. SO, the darkness remains, opening the possibility of a sequel. I hope i'm right
@LucrecioSherlock well like alan said, there has to be a balance of light and dark, so you can't not have any darkness. = there is always a possibility of a sequel! 8D
Oh my god, i suddenly recognize the word "this not a lake..." Alan say by a "darkness" voice.
That I think maybe, like before, Alan's mind was prisoned by the Dark Presence, a part of him writed his escape.
Now when his mind totally free, a part of Dark Presence apply in his head, writed what it want, the greated power: it's not a lake, it's an ocean = not only haunt at Bright Fall, but also the whole world
@blackraven0513 Funny thing I just finished Deus Ex HR on easy and was so fucking frustrated at the end. I played Alan Wake on the hardest setting multiple time and the story always drives me forward. One of my all time favorite games.
he died, he wrote we would die that night on the dive, and that will cancel everything was happening at moment, saying ocen at the end as reference to the drowning, sorry my english =D
in the end he says "its not a lake its an ocean" maybe he means that darkness is not ending on this lake its an ocean like its so expanse that its hard to finish it and to save alice
(maybe this isnt the end of the game...or it ll be finish on alan wake 2 :P)
@MrHamtaq i like the confusing ending Stephen King even said that a clear ending takes away from the mystery of the story it says something like this in the game to
@MrHamtaq Basically, Alan sacrificed himself and stayed in the dark place, writing a new novel, so that his wife could be brought back to the normal world. Him going "It's not a lake, it's an ocean" suggests that The Dark Presence is worldwide and not just in Bright Falls.
@anon2971 i like your view but still i cant connect alan wake with alan wake nightmare .. if alan wake is back where is his girlfriend that got out of the lake and how did he even got out of the darkness in the lake writing an ending:"P i hate it when i cant connect the whole story together
I can't get over how amazing this game is. The soundtrack and music, the visuals, the gameplay, the storyline...it's just...great. xD

@gumcom Where or when does it say Bright Falls is an island?
Atvishees 4 months ago
@Atvishees
Because Alan clearly said it wasn't a lake, it's an ocean.
Therefore, Bright Falls is an island.
And the producers said they grabbed some elements from Lost for the game. Lost is about a mysterious island with a lot of weird shit happens.
gumcom 4 months ago
@gumcom If Bright Falls was an island, it must be a hell of a big island (you know, one that supports multiple highways, large parks and foresting areas, a monstrous mountain range, a sizeable agriculture, thousands of inhabitants, etc).
There is no reason that it should be an island; and it looks pretty connected to me though.
Atvishees 4 months ago
@Atvishees
An island doesn't have to be small. And that's the mystery. How did Bright Falls become an island? Maybe after Alan got there, it's been completely cut off from the world. Like Silent Hill.
gumcom 4 months ago
@gumcom But its not cut off! That's my whole point.
As you can see by the sheer amount of stranded cars and empty houses which can be seen every night after every darkness attack, you can see how many people live there. You can clearly see how burstingly full it is at day time! It is even said once how many people would come to that deer fest from outside the town.
What Alan said at the end is definitely meant metaphorical (it would sound stupid of him to state the painfully obvious).

@Atvishees
We'll just wait for Alan Wake 2 then. We'll see who's right. Remember me in a year or two. LOL
gumcom 4 months ago
@gumcom Mate, how old are you?
You're not supposed to take everything literally. Especially not Alan Wake (which is kind of the point of the game's philospohy, it's a metaphor in a metaphor. A meta-metaphor, if you will).

@Atvishees
It's an ocean. It's an island.

@gumcom Nope. The other guy is right. It's a metaphor. I dunno what's stopping you from comprehending that, but it's a metaphor, nonetheless.
FailHazard 4 months ago
@FailHazard How would you surely know its a metaphor. Did you make the game?
gumcom 4 months ago
@gumcom Nope. I sure as hell did not. That doesn't change a thing. By "It's an ocean," it is implied that the story he is writing is much deeper than previously thought. The story has a mind of it's own. (Just like all stories do... well-written stories anyway.) So he must delve deeper into the story and keep writing until it is certain that it can be concluded. That's what he means by "It's an ocean."

@FailHazard And that's how you interpret it. Not how exactly the makers intended it to be. No one knows how it was intended other than the makers. unless you can get an interview to the makers of the game, you dont have any valid argument.
gumcom 4 months ago
@gumcom If Couldron Lake were an ocean, it would be just a few thousand times bigger. An "ocean" is a very large body of water, such as the pacific or the atlantic. Cauldron lake is an oversized pond in a volcano crater.
He probably mean that Cauldron Lake was an ocean inside (such as in an ocean of other people's thoughts and motivations, of writers' fantasies and written universes). He means that people call it a lake without noticing its vast dark secret (no pun intended).
Atvishees 4 months ago
This was a horrible ending. So Alan jumped into the water and Alice came out? Like a trade? Because that's just stupid.
Exuvium97 5 months ago
@Exuvium97 It's a cliffhanger.
gumcom 4 months ago
Before Alan finish Barbara Jagger, she says clearly that she's much older than him, and that she'll find the way to come back. If we remember, there's two people who were touched by the darkness and who Alan didn't killed; in fact, these two people appear with an cold and dark expression in their faces at the end of the game: Rose Marigold and Robert Nigthingale. SO, the darkness remains, opening the possibility of a sequel. I hope i'm right
LucrecioSherlock 5 months ago
@LucrecioSherlock well like alan said, there has to be a balance of light and dark, so you can't not have any darkness. = there is always a possibility of a sequel! 8D

can anyone tell me if you think there will be a part 2
cozierbow19 5 months ago
@cozierbow19 They've already confirmed that they have more stuff already in production, so its not over ;) Just have to wait a bit.
magnusmastah 5 months ago
Oh my god, i suddenly recognize the word "this not a lake..." Alan say by a "darkness" voice.
That I think maybe, like before, Alan's mind was prisoned by the Dark Presence, a part of him writed his escape.
Now when his mind totally free, a part of Dark Presence apply in his head, writed what it want, the greated power: it's not a lake, it's an ocean = not only haunt at Bright Fall, but also the whole world

By far the best game ever made in the history of gaming and definitely the best story ever written.
blackraven0513 6 months ago
@blackraven0513 Funny thing I just finished Deus Ex HR on easy and was so fucking frustrated at the end. I played Alan Wake on the hardest setting multiple time and the story always drives me forward. One of my all time favorite games.

How can you copyright a video from a game?
nechikens 6 months ago
in the end he says "its not a lake its an ocean" maybe he means that darkness is not ending on this lake its an ocean like its so expanse that its hard to finish it and to save alice
(maybe this isnt the end of the game...or it ll be finish on alan wake 2 :P)
staskeen786 6 months ago
I think ocean means a number 2 and the darkness made him change locations to a bigger place!

This game rocks, but ending is so confusing
MrHamtaq 6 months ago 10
@MrHamtaq Not really. He sacrifice himself to save Alice. He's stuck on the bottom of the lake and she is safe on dry land. The end! :)
spanjoar 4 months ago
@MrHamtaq i like the confusing ending Stephen King even said that a clear ending takes away from the mystery of the story it says something like this in the game to
wd1250 3 months ago
@MrHamtaq Basically, Alan sacrificed himself and stayed in the dark place, writing a new novel, so that his wife could be brought back to the normal world. Him going "It's not a lake, it's an ocean" suggests that The Dark Presence is worldwide and not just in Bright Falls.
anon2971 3 months ago 57
@anon2971 It might also suggest that the Dark Place is much larger than Cauldron Lake.

@anon2971 Alan was in the cabin all along as you can see. The character you are playing as is actually Mr. Scratch (hence the scratch on his head.)
My theory.
