  • Top tier 2600 party game. Cold beer, jalapeno chips, 3 buddies, Warlords.

  • There is a new version, but on the nes. it just came out from retrozone its called 8 bit xmax 2011

  • There will be a new version on this on PSN/XBLA coming this month! Definitely going to buy that! And if we're lucky, this version will be hidden in there. :)

  • The Shantae Risky Revenge review brought me here.

  • @schtive81 hah me too man. i had to see what game this was

  • Yes, this was an awesome game to play with 3 other friends

  • Actually an Atari Costs $40

  • This actually reminds me of breakout!

  • I play this all the time on my Atari app on my iPod. I'm waiting to get another set of paddle controllers before I buy the actual cart.

  • I also wish someone would tell me how the remakes even make this game playable without paddles. On 2600, you can go in an instant from the very left to the corner of your walls, or all the way to the right in the same instant. With an analogue stick on an Xbox, I can't see how you can control it.

  • Why does nobody complain about the controls for this game? On the bottom two it's fine: Clockwise paddle rotation invokes clockwise player rotation. But on the top it's inverted. That's so annoying and unintuitive. I'm hoping any remakes of this will have the option to set which way the rotation goes.

  • @cptnoremac idk, I never had a problem with it, i just got used to it pretty quick...

  • I remember a crash bandicoot party game having this sort of mechanic in one of the minigames.

  • I have this but sadly my paddles are broken :( gonna buy more soon...

  • XBLA & PSN versions are on their way this year

  • Why did we leave Atari...

  • Did you get this game from Robert Zuflacht?

  • yeah man

  • can warlords be played with regular joysticks as well?

  • Human freinds........Its a good job the Atari can control three paddles.

  • I just got Atari Classics for my iPod Touch, and no joke, the high score for Warlords was CGR!

  • They're REMAKING THIS GAME on today's consoles!

  • I hear lots of great things about this game. I might get an Atari one day for this and some other classics.

  • what so warlord about this, lol

  • @dapithapon I was thinking this was going to be like some kind of RPG or something. This is more like the wall breaking game with the paddle and the ball, where you break free power ups and stuff.

  • @FalconMan1960 You mean Break out / Arkanoid.

  • wasn't this the hidden game in the making of Lunar Silver Star Story Complete for PS1?

  • @SatoshiMatrix1

    OH HELL YEAH.

"Lords of Lunar" was proof-of-concept that a Warlords-style game could be done without paddle controllers--you don't move the paddle with the stick, you AIM it. It was REALLY customizable, too. I still bring out the Making Of disc sometimes just so I can hit Up Down Left Right Triangle Start and play it again.

I wish Classic Game Room would review it.

  • I haven't gotten around to checking this game out until now even though I've had it for a while when I got a huge stack of Atari games. I love this game. The first time I played it after watching this review and realizing that I actually had it I played it for hours. I couldn't stop playing. I'll have to get another set of paddles so 4 people can play.

  • At a recent hotel event, me and friends were playing a 'flashback' device that had this and a few other Atari games upon it. We all agreed that Warlords was an awesome classic party game. Sadly, that imitation device used joysticks...and only two. And, now that I see your review, the 'imitator' was a watered down version. For, it never moved the ball that quickly and made the game feel just a bit dull.

I shall be e-bay'ing for this game and two sets of paddles.

  • great game for seizures, ahah

  • 2600 Warlords is much more fun than the arcade version, IMO.

  • You're absolutely right that paddle and trackball controllers need to make a comeback. Trying to play this with a joystick immediately takes most of the fun away.

What appears to be missing with the home version is one key feature that the arcade has: when the fireball is captured, it starts burning the castle walls behind it, thus presenting a penalty for holding it for long. I have the arcade cocktail version which is great for parties. The 2600 version is almost just as good though!

  • hell yeah, i had this on the atari aniversary collection for dreamcast. we used to play this all night. awesome game.

  • best 4 player atari game, hands down

  • trackballs? That sounds painful! Love the videos

  • For those who enjoy "Warlords", I suggest "Medieval Mayhem" for the 2600 , its a newly released improved version of "Warlords" , its more true to the original arcade version :)

its got a nice menu system that allows you to set AI players difficulty , slightly improved graphics , multiple balls on-screen ... its just like "Warlords" , except more intense :D

I'd suggest you all check it out :]

  • i have it for the gba it also comes with centipied and break out

  • they have released it on xbox live

  • I use to love this game when I was little! I use to practice all the time and was a game I could beat all my friends with. Never played it in the arcade.

  • purple and green got pwned

  • this is my fav atari 2600 game

  • do u know how old this game is

  • Then get out.

  • god you faggots are fucking sensitive.

  • I'm sensitive? O.O

I was just saying that if all you care about is graphics, you probably shouldn't be looking up 30 year old video games. Seriously dude, chill out.

  • i cannot find an emulator to play this on but i wanted to play the arcade version not the atari version

  • Hey, to play four player do you need a couple of Joystick "Y" adapter cables, or are there four ports? I don't currently own a VCS.

  • Nevermind, I saw on Atariage that it's two controllers per one cable.

  • there are two paddles per one port

  • One "controller" is 2 paddles connected to each other. Kind of like earbuds. So just find 2 separate paddle units and you're good to go.

  • Hay! Why to release paddle controllers again? There's plenty of 'em. Just buy from ebay.

    They're for atari though.

  • It means that modern consoles should have paddle controllers.

  • i know. Why need modern consoles, when you can have atari.

  • That's partially true, but until Timesplitters 2 is ported to the 2600, modern systems will still have their place.

  • @AlienComppany yeah

  • @AlienComppany yeah man

  • and more joysticks

  • This is available on Xbox Live Arcade.

  • This must be fantastically entertaining with 3 mates and the right game variation.

  • this game was awesome brillient multiplayer

  • I used to play this with my family. We had four paddle controllers, and this enabled us to play our favorite version: ricochet with "lightning bolt". Every so often we would play with the "fireball" version or with the "catch" option, but the ricochet w/lightning bolt kept us laughing and shouting. The "catching" option often led to ganging up on someone.

Anyway, thanks...you brought back some good memories.

We gave away our Atari years ago and never bothered with other TV video games.

  • Putting the controller connector on the BACK of the Atari was a mistake. After awhile I quit playing paddle games simply because I was tired of switching back-and-forth between joystick and paddle.

If they would have put the connector on the front, as they did with the 7800, it would have been much easier to use.

  • It was early days, I suppose: that lesson is well and truly learnt now. What kind of fool would make a system like that today? Back then things were untested, unknown and mysterious.

  • I think they placed the ports in the back so that everyone could appreciate the wood paneling on the system.

  • I suppose that's a point, yes. It *does* have a sweet woodgrain finish...

  • I loved playing a variant of this on Lunar for PSX. It was a special feature.. one I vaguely remember how to unlock..

oh god, I wanna play the original. :)

  • As a 13yr old I overturned this game back to "0".

I was shocked for an hour.

  • This was definately one of my favorite games for the system and ...

"Warlords is best played with human friends"

  • if the player has any ;)

  • which you know they don't. XD

<3 being a loner gamer! lol.

    not really...

  • I bought the "Plug N Play" version of this at Walmart. Awesome and addicting.

  • hey you should review game 1 for Odyssey

    haha

  • I remember getting an Atari collection for the original Playstation with Warlords on it. The analog stick worked pretty well in lieu of the paddle controller.

  • This is one of the games my dad had with his Atari 2600.

Within the recent years that we dug it out, that was also one of the games that we managed to find. It's so fun to play with friends.

  • Has anyone played crash bash?

  • lol yeah, there was a game in crash bash like this where u had to get the ball in the goal.,,

  • Warlords is best played with "Human Friends" lol

  • Why, is there so meny games named warlords, that have nothing to do with each other?

  • I liked the flash effect (like in Video Pinball). A very very addictive game and fun!

BUT!!! Paddle controllers always wear out and fuck up!! We went through 3 sets of them!!

  • But it is on the 360 arcade though

  • This game actually looks like it'd be great with 4 people together.

  • Reminds me of that Mr. Mime mini game on Pokemon Stadium 2.

  • Damn games took alot more skill back in the day.

  • "In the future, video games will have better graphics than real life so watch out ! "

  • true. but i cant imagine how it can be better that now

  • a remake for this game really could be done well, some HD graphics, some power-ups,

maybe when you go for a big ricochet time could even slow down to idolize your opponents defeat

  • its on xbox live arcade

  • yes, and zoom in on the final blow.

i would pay for this on the psn, with online play, it would be fantastic.

    they could ake it better:

4x4 grid of players, 16 in total

    4 balls

    maximum mayhem

  • Ahh the famous hook shot at 5:04. Saved me many a times.

The best 2600 game, hands down! You are right, not the same on an Xbox w/o Paddles.

Death sound at volume 10 is so sweet!

  • This game is a lot of fun. I own it.

  • I've never played this one, but I do remember the paddle controllers fondly. I remember the first time my dad brought home an Atari 2600 with two paddle controllers, two joysticks; and a shoebox full of games.. that was back in the mid 80's when I was like 4 or 5 years old.

For me, the best part about the 2600 was that games were dirt cheap... (this was after the 'video game crash'). You could go into a department store and get 2 games for less than $10 from a discount bin.

  • I got Warlords but don't have the paddle controllers. Dang.

  • Too bad i dont have 3 buddies constantly available to me so i can play games like this on multiplayer, because it must be very boring to play this alone, :S.

  • the audio is higher quality and there is less compression,

it's like watching it on a tv

  • granted the audio is higher quality. i didnt mean it in offence it just seems like a pretty weird thing to advertise your videos in HD so much when its just the audio and size that changes

  • The "HD" in CGR: HD doesn't stand for high-definition.

  • The video looks clearer. You want to watch footage (except if your net speed is low) with pixels the size of king kong? That's exactly why people mod their retro consoles with component outputs. The colors look better, the graphics look more clear. It's just more enjoyable to look at.

  • HAHAHAHA Oh Man I remember playing this game as a tribute secret on the game "Lunar The Silver Star Story" This game is awesome ^^

  • simple as pie but looks like a really fun game

  • how do you catch the ball?

  • hold the button and you'll catch it when it touches you paddle

  • This game was also released on the Xbox arcade.

  • Bring some more atari stuff!!

  • I have not owned a Atari, although, I've played on a Coeclovision (sp?) before. I've always been a Nintendo junkie, unfortunately. I love things like Breakout, and things.

Graphics do not make a game - I can usually be found playing old games on the DS courtesy of a emulator.

  • Colecovision lol ive heard about it few times not even seen it written and i can write it lol.

  • omg im am so sorry, i tried to click play and i accedentally clicked 1-star. my most sincire apologies.

  • Atari 2600 had one button and was 8 bits. Based on the 86 5 star ratings in the hour or so it's been up, I'd say you're in the minority. Besides, he just finished reviewing a few Sega games as well as WII games, and there are hundreds of people on YouTube and elsewhere reviewing Sega/NES/etc. It's not like there is this shortage of reviews of post-Atari 2600 games.

  • atari is the father of gaming

    it deserves respect dude

all the "newer" versions wouldn't be around without this game

  • Wow, just when I thought human stupity couldn't get any lower you have proved me wrong. By bashing a 20+ year old gaming system cause it takes place on a single screen, what games doesn't. The sound effects hurt your ears, there's a mute button, or can you not find it. And since when did a joy stick count as a button? You sound like a 12 year old kid who's only gaming experience is on the PS3/360.

  • Your cool.

  • I know, its a curse

  • You clearly know nothing about a video game.Atari is the defintition of a video game. not your good old ps2 xbox 360 ps3 bullshit. Those arent shit compared to that atari.Your obviously one of those 11 year old kids who grew up playing ps2 and ps3.Before you bash on a classic masterpiece make sure you know what the definiton of it is. Bye have fun with ur 360 ill be playing berserk on my 2600

  • 19 years old that explains everything. When will you kids learn that Graphics, power, and sound dont make the game good....All you basically did was prove that fact that ur an idiot. 360 and ps3 are better because their powerful lol?? Atari has tons of reply value.Pitfall 2 is a prime example or berserk.YOur saying that the classic atari joystick isnt a controlleR? then how can you play that game if its not a controller common sense.nuff said..you dont know the proper traits that make atari good.

  • Too true

  • Ahh, don't use his age as the reason! I'm 19 and I grew up with the SNES as my first system, but I've got a deep appreciation for these really old games and I actively play them still to this day.

  • Yeah, your right. Atari has tons of replay value. You can play it with your friends in your dads basement for 5 minutes on a black and white Tv! While The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion only takes 100+ hours to fully complete.

  • bah, you clearly understand nothing. Back then people were using their imagination, and now they play these "hi-tech" video game systems where the only thing that is working are your fingers, and you brain is slowly going into a coma.

  • Black and white TV? If I remembered correctly Tv's were in color is the late 70s-mid 80s.And if you ask me a black and white Tv is the traditional way to play atari.Who would play an atari on a 52 inch flat screen TV? .If you were only gonna play a console for 5 minutes then what would be that point of playing it at all? thank you for that unlike your Oblivion you can pop an atari game right in and play it for 5 minutes before you leave for work or something.Unlike oblivion.

  • Im an Atari fanboy? And that explains why I own a Sega Dreamcast and a xbox 360 rofl. Fail much?

  • TO shadow1854 (AKA the "19" year old kid, who thinks Atari is "retawded"):

The videogame crash occured of a lot of reasons. Mainly because of other companies releasing games for the 2600 without their permision, that and over 10 different consoles simply flooded the market. I think you are the idiot, my friend, if you think Atari is shit.

  • Shut up you asshole nobody cares what you think!!

  • Exactly my point.

  • So why are you watching these reviews?

  • Because I like to hear other people's opinions. :)

  • Lol, I am 19 and I LOVE the Atari 2600. :D

I made many gameplay videos of its games :)

  • Atari rocks, although the lack of permission did give birth to Activision. Plus a lot of other great games came out of it... Amongst the sea of crap. What could of made it work was infostructure, reviews (other than Atari Age) and better BBSs. Also I think if TV shows about how to beat video games were a little more disciminating... They actually showed you how to beat ET... Come on. It maybe better than Sword Quest, but ugh. Terriable.

  • >>>BBSs.

In 1979? Uh, sorry but they did not exist yet. Oh well.. Atari's mistreatment of its employees led to spinoff companies like Activision and Amiga. Where would we be if Jay Miner had not quit Atari and created the Commodore Amiga with 4000-color graphics in 1985? That would be tragic.

  • Actually they were born February 16, 1978. They became popular amongst gamers/techy people in 1982 and by 1990 the various systems were connected through this mysterious thing we call the Internet.

  • Well if you were living when atari came out you would be amazed and baffled

  • I love this game. No shit I played this for a while with my 6 year old niece. How awesome is that?

Only thing I don't like is that green sucks in a 2 player or 1 player game. He always loses. BTW Mark, you know you can set it to not stick to paddles if you mess with difficulty switches. Makes it much more challenging, esp. 4 player.

  • You should review a Nintendo DS Space Invaders (or was it some other game?) game where a paddle plugs into the GBA port.

  • gotta love how they're almost in conspiracy against you

  • There is a 360 Warlords, but the controls are terrible. The DS version on Atari Retro Classics was great, just sucks it's multicart.

Atari Age has a great homebrew game of Warlords called Medieval Mayhem. It's pretty much arcade perfect Warlords with extras. They even ramp up the difficulty by adding more fireballs on the screen and it gets really crazy.

If you love Warlords you owe it to yourself to check it out, it's a really well made game and worth the money.

  • i love watching these videos

  • Thanks for the big bunch of Atari games during this week :)

  • also you can see how the game counts entire matches as a single point that this game is a true party game built for long sessions between friends

  • ooh I played this!! I read in the enclosed instruction book that the ghosts of the defeated player's goal thingies haunted the battlefield...you can see them when the screen flashes white.

  • I said the same thing about your mom.

  • I love that game when I was a kid good times man good times my friends and I would have sleep overs and play it all night long

  • Wow, I never played this one before!

  • i love the song in the begining

  • This game really is an excellent party game. However, I've had some cases where people drink too much and start beating people up in the living room while playing this game :)

  • Comment removed

  • yeah I loved Warlords. Did you even notice the green one was a complete idiot?

  • On the plug and play tv games Atari 2600 paddle version warlords is on it and pong and some other games I got it for $15, its kinda like me having a mini Atari 2600 ^^

  • Yeah finally I've been wanting this review!

  • I can't watch the video it says taht it isn't available.

  • click "watch in HD"

  • wating this in HD makes me horny

  • I used to have Retro Atari Classics. I wish I hadn't traded it in... I loved Warlords.

  • got this on atari flashback i want to play with a friend but the ships dont come up on the screen and it gets all blinky is it the tv im playing it on its just a lcd tv

  • I've got that on xbox. ^^

  • When I started the video, it said," video not available", but I click the HD button and it plays. What happened?

  • nice video.

  • The Ships Look Like XBox Controllers.

  • lol
