This guy was ok, but should not have won it which he didn't. If I were a judge, I wouldn't have even considered him on of the best...not enough technique displayed. And I seriously think people get carried away with those double pedals thinking that makes someone good....it doesn't. Look at Tony Royster Jr. double kick on a single pedal...he'll shut this dude down.

This guy is good. Take nothing away from him. But SO MANY elements of his solo are very reminiscent of Donnie Marples solo from '07. Bring some originality with you, not some plagiarized shit thats not even 4 years old. This is too much flash, not enough skill and the flow of this solo is shit. Great drummer, poorly planned solo.

Sampson was more entertaining, not more technically sound than McGrath. That's what lost it for him. What's the use of being "that good" if you can't relate and include the crowd? I, personally, know better singers than Beyonce'... but she's a better entertainer than they are and you know her, not my friends. LOL
@wooohaaa77 Except that McGrath had the biggest crowd response. Much more so than Ramon Sampson. He was the only one that had a standing ovation & the longest.
@STlovesTS You had to have been there then, because it's not what I hear watching the video. McGrath just seemed "sterile" in comparison. (my opinion)

He was great. I thought this started of better than Samspon, but he lost me towards the end. In my opinion, I don't think he showed off that he was comfortable in as many styles as Sampson did. Also, I think he would've won in 2008 and 2010. Just not 2009.

That cocky look at the 3:00 minute mark is where he blew it. You can tell he thinks he is hot shit. Seen alot of routine drumline moves through out this solo even the elbow in the snare, jezz. When your competing against young kids you better act humble. Trying to figure out if he was the quad man or is he 1st snare material Hmmmm. This contest sets up perfectly for pattern geeks like drumline guys. Thats all they have ever done anyway. Its a math problem to them not music. Mr. Roboto

What do you want to bet this guy played quads in the marching band. Good speed just seem to me to he kept going back to the well to often didn't change the pace up hardly at all. Had all the licks even knew to throw in the latin thing. This guy knows the formula. Just a little to cocky, its a turnoff to judges especially when competeing against a kid. kid will get the nod every time. The Danny Marple move is evidence how these guys just keep copying all the latest moves.

I think jungle drumming (if there is such a thing) is the correct style of drumming in this performance: it's random, crazy, and a lot of ruckus. It also puts a heck of a show.

He should not have won. His sound is awful. The tone you get out of the drums is more important than anything. This is why Brian Blade is playing music and not wasting time at drum solo competitions.

I think jungle drumming (if there is such a thing) is the correct style of drumming in this performance: it's random, crazy, and a lot of ruckus. It also puts a heck of a show.

He should not have won. His sound is awful. The tone you get out of the drums is more important than anything. This is why Brian Blade is playing music and not wasting time at drum solo competitions.

come on people there are comments all over about how McGrath should have won this competition, but really come on. Not once in his solo does he groove like Ramon Sampson.He should have known better to keep it simpler and work on making these things explode imo.His sound is lacking as well in comparison.
