(see below first... continuing) I challenge you with your Elph to make a real video for this song. Read Bukowski. Listen to Elliott. Then go out, shoot and make the video.
It's 2011. And this is the problem with aesthetics and beauty. Bravo that you shot it with your Elph. It's a compilation of emotive clips that lay down well to the soft pulse of MP's incredible version of this song. But it is irrelevant, and thus, aesthetic poison.
Elliott Smith, between the bars, stabbed himself in the heart and died. The point of this song is lost in the irrelevance of these posh aesthetes. And to me that's even more sad than Elliott dying himself.
What is her real voice, her own unique voice? not Billie Holiday's voice which came to her through her own life experience, and not through a contrivance or trying to "sound like"...well, anybody but her most authentic self. This video is brilliant. It is original and reflects a definitively unique vision. Paying tribute to Billie Holiday would be someone living their lives boldly and bravely, sometimes even wrongly, but always finding expressing themselves through their own voice.
I would argue that "voice" is more than tone, phrasing, timing etc,but also the choices an artist makes in the material they choose to explore.Yes,her influences are obvious but that's on the surface-it's the "journey" I'm more interested in.Plus I like "hearing" Billie in these settings.
she has this song which i love but cant find on here i dont know if its on here or if im doing somthing wrong but its called always a use ( im pretty sure it is anyway)
Madeleine is an amazing vocalist, but to say her version is more "heartfelt" just shows a lack of knowledge on the song, subject matter, and Elliott's troubles with it.
im not real big on re-covers,especially being a huge elliott fan,but i like this one alot, coolio jazz twist with the drms bass and vocal, they made it their own, very cool..
I LOVE both Elliott Smith's original and particularly M. Peyroux's cover of his song. Your video is the best one posted on youtube using her version - thanks!
brilliant, i like it as much as the original, just has emotional but in a different kinda way, love it ,top video ,,,,,,,,, theres hope 4 us all,i hope
thats a great video. it goes a little bad at about 1.30 for awhile but gets its groove back later. some really wonderful shots in there that work really well with the song. nice one
i think her take on it is better than Elliot Smith's, he wrote the lyrics though so he should get the credit but still, she really brings it into focus.
she is amazing i dont even like jazz my boyfriend does normally im bored when we go into Jazz music shops but when he was browsing i put the eas fones on and heard her he couldnt get me outa the shop without buying me the album... ;) its the first time he wanted to leave a record shop before me ;) I love her so much she is an inspiration!

Holy shit it's someone trying to channel Billie Holiday trying to channel Elliott Smith!
Love your video tho -- as interesting, original, and risk-taking as this music is not.

See I like the Billie influence in that it's rare to hear an artist pay tribute to the Lady in such an inspired way.Your loss.

No Top quality video, but Madeleine had a voice from another time. The best jazz female singer after Patricia Barber.
