I got one after I got tired of my iPhone 3G. Good alternative, Windows Mobile seriously needs an update though, there are still way to many non-touch friendly menus. It's certainly better than it used to be.

You don't have to get a data plan as far as I know, but it will limit it's abilities a lot. I might be wrong, but I don't think they require you to get a plan with the device purchase.

If you have problems with choppiness from streaming videos on youtube or hulu and the like (flash based), then it's either your CPU that needs upgrading, or your internet connection is too slow.
