  • This man is headed for a Nobel Prize.

  • GMO is not good. PERIOD!

  • @twohseven If things were so black and white, there wouldn't be a debate about it.

  • @twohseven Saying something is not good because you saw a shitty made-for-TV sci-fi movie one time and ending your statement with "PERIOD!" doesn't make you right or even interesting. PERIOD!

  • You have no idea man... the entire bioengineering arena has an incomplete understanding of DNA itself so how can they be doing things the right way, as in the natural way, in understanding of the universal natural law. For example, check out the DNA phantom effect it has been long proven that DNA is more than chemical processes yet all these gmo makers are looking at is the genetic code and the chemical aspect of DNA. There is soo much more to this, one couldnt explain in a short Utube comment.

  • @twohseven My friend, you need to defend your point if you want it to have any validity.

I will say that GMOs are unhealthy by their definition. If we consume mutated foods, then we will become mutated.

But you're one of the ignorant people you refer to; if you pay attention to the video Craig Venter isn't talking about altering organisms, he's talking about synthetically creating ones of our own! No modifications going on here, just creation.

  • @ReasonwriterD703 i stand by my points although this is youtube, wrought with censorship, trolls and albeit a small but voiceful population of sane and intelligent people, yet we are the minority it seems.. anywho i know GMOrganisms and i know craig venter too. And I dont agree with the bioengineering industrys ways because they are completely (as with all modern models from astrophysics to chemistry) missing a vital foundation of science that is universal natural law and the science of man...

  • @ReasonwriterD703 scientist is just a label. Ppl trust doctors and such cause of their validity and credibility? But that is arbitrary to ones preferences. Truth is modern science has rejected & not explored all the aspects of reality and its wrought with misconceptions, empty theories that don't fit in any unified field concept. Its reckless technology.

The works of brilliant minds like Walter Russell, John Keely, Victor Schauberger, Marcel Vogel, Pier Ighina, Marconi, etc Now THERES TRUTH!!

  • Wow. just wow. lots of ignorant people here.

  • The time for applying genomics in really cool ways is now here. Could not be a better time to be a biologist.

  • @karlkarlkarl1234 But you are a bioligy student karl not a biologist.

  • @con2477

I didn't say I was a biologist, I just said it was a good time to be one, in logical anticipation that I nearly am one. But of course you would have to use your brain to see that.

  • why the fuck can i not watch a science video without fucking numpties spreading their pish about god? fuck off and chew on your bible, and if your going to leave a comment at least leave an intelligent and constructive one!! I am also willing to bet my bank account you are all americans.

  • 18:45 what the hell does it matter what religion has to say on making life in the lab?..why even bother asking them?..what if they did find something in their little books that said "thou shalt not try to create life"?.. would the research have been put on hold?..its a sad sad world if the great works of science have to seek permission from dogmatic religions to make discoveries.

  • @iouakick that was meant to be 15:35 ... not 18:45 ;D

  • yeah...what about horizontal transfer of virulence genes

    ? lol

  • This guys is further talking bullshit when he says just because a person can make fragments of DNA then they are not infective. The only documented observation of the intestines of humans eating genetically modified food proved that the DNA fragments in the food did NOT digest but rather they transferred to the good bacteria in the intestines. In theory, the human intestines could then start producing BT toxin insecticides. Search on youtube Dr. Maurice Helliman.

  • Mr. dinogrower:

I'm interested to know from which university you received your biology degree?

  • When this guy is talking about the safety aspects using Ebola as an example he is talking bullshit. The average person is not dangerous with RNA but that is not true with bacteria. M genitalium is associated with cervicitis in women and Chlamydia trachomatis in men. Any person who reads the literature can tell you. Mycoplasma has been linked to Gulf War Syndrome. Look for a Popular Science article about Sharon Nicolson. There are documented accounts of the gov of US using this on its own people.

  • Interesting...

  • I don't believe the posts here.. Craig Venter has only proved that you need intelligent life/beings to create new life.. Life almost certainly doesn't happen by accident.. It does bring about a new basis to interpreting religious texts and scriptures but not scrapping it.. U morons!

  • @KevinismG There are some interesting reads in religious scriptures but to believe that they still have something substantial to offer the world then I say you are misguided, or perhaps just unwilling to let go of this part of your life. After all, surgeons don't look to 18th century medical texts on how to do procedures.

  • Sei troppo bello con la barba... voglio essere come te

  • At 15.55 "..religious leaders were using their scriptures as lawbooks and couldn't find anything in them prohibiting making life.." Pretty well proves the Bible is an ancient work of fiction. The idea we could create life would not have been conceivable to ancient humans. But an all-powerful god would ban it at the start.

  • When one considers the Judeo Christian definition of God as being an entity that is everywhere and knows everything, that God must be in the genomes, in us, in what we have not defined etc etc etc. So that that God is also in the life making forces, that supposedly happenned on whatever day the Bible says it was supposed to have started possibly....but that creation has actually never ended, or at least does not appear to have ended!

  • yet another opinion in which, by infusing a flawed personal bias into the fray, we are supposed to discount anything save what we can see.

  • What Craig Venter did (or doing) is not really creating new species or life, IMO. 'God' himself can create something out of nothing but people, like scientists, cannot do that. Certainly what scientists are doing is just using resources and put them together. Technically, it's not a creation.

  • Nonsense. Venter IS creating life!

If you can put two completely non-living objects together to create a living one you are creating life; and that's precisely what Venter has done.

If God really exists, it took him 13.7-3.2 = 10.5 billion years to create primordial life on Earth. Venter can do that over a bloody weekend. So shove your infinitely stupid God up you-know-where!

  • I'm Atheist, but as Carl Sagan said "If you wish to make an Apple Pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe".

So it's not really playing God anyways, unless the person's idea of God is very small (which it used to be, so you could say we're Playing God when we pay 200 dollars to sit on a "Throne in the Heavens" via airplane)

  • @sciencemile

    Very well said :)

  • wisdom

  • i agree with you 5micky2 that the bible is probably a load of rubbish. however, i must say your arguement in this instant is awful. and to presume that "an all-powerful god would ban it at the start" is not a very scientific or logical way of debating!

  • "All powerful" means no challengers. No usurpers. No upstarts. I can imagine an all powerful god saying: "The ability to make life is the greatest power there is. If I am to remain all powerful I cannot allow someone else to have this power. Therefore I am banning the creation of life by anyone but myself. And furthermore, I will put it in the holy books so there is no confusion about the matter." As it's not in the holy books, the books were not dictated by an all powerful god.

  • An all-powerful god might not necessarilly ban the Bible, but an all-wise one certainly would.

  • I stand in AWE. Thank you for all that you do to understand this, genomes, microcrobes .... micro-organisms .... small parts of dna .... I bow 2 U xxxx

  • @DONTMAKEMELAUGH

Don't bow. Next thing you know, you'll be praying to him. If you are impressed, then learn what DNA is. Understand the various combinations of the four bases invovled. It's knowable.

Respect is in order but don't start that bowing down stuff. Leave that to the religious nuts.

  • Previous comment rant over...

Thank you again for such a fantastic lecture.

Transport is needed which eventually needs oil. Burning oil is found to be bad but because of the cheap, abundant energy, we are able to pool immense amounts of brainpower. We then discover how to biologically manufacture organisms to undo the damage caused whilst we were growing up.

    Brilliant.

    Love.

  • Can any xtians please tell us where this sort of stuff is in the bible?

You know, useful stuff that has real value?

    No?

    Love.

  • ownage.

  • "If god really wanted us to believe in him, he'd exist..."

    Linda Smith.

    Love.

  • I love these talks too..the music at the end is awesome too!

  • Hahahaha! that's how you convince ppl to keep founding the study :) keep it up XD i liked it :)

  • This is really interesting. Luckily I have the education needed to understand most of it and its things like these that give me hope for the future. Just imagine a filtering machine made of these biological substances that can filter CO2 to produce oxygen or some other chemicals... Certainly would help.

  • best idea since beer... hehe also a microbial gift :) mmmmm beer.

  • I'd feel more optimistic if Homeland Security wasn't one of the 'advisory bodies'.

Can people who try to justify warrantless search and seizure be trusted with genome synthesis?

  • When you are talking about synthetic cells and the possible creation of designer organisms of course they are gonna be in on it.

  • I imagine it will go something like this: "EXcuse me sir, you have a genetic disposition to terrorism, please put these cuffs and this hood and diaper on - have a nice rendition flight"

If it turns out they screwed up on the ID they could fit you with 'the terror gene' with a retrovirus.

    God Help America!

  • Amazing!!!

  • Love this video.

  • Bioethics has feck all to do with religion.

  • i'll second that. religion has driven us for long enough, time for a new navigator; science.

  • How about reason and rationality?

  • I'm a religious person but I'm all for science and reason and rationality ruling the day, definitely. But (some) Christians are going to force their geo-paternal noses into this and tell us all what we have to do or don't do, I guarantee you, and history shows us Christians will slaughter people to enforce their private codes (not that they are alone in this).

  • I'm confused as to what you're saying. It seems to be that as a Christain you're actually taking the blindfold off and coming to some kind of realization, yet at the same time you still stand for it and support that history.

  • Very interesting stuff. I love genes, genetics and genomics :-D.

  • I love these talks. I wish they were longer though. A full lecture. Thanks.
