i love the hot air balloon scene. to those who say they hate this movie, if you haven't already, watch 8 1/2. after seeing the fellini, it's hard for me to use only this movie as a pretext to condemn woody allen as pretentious. he may or may not be, but it really is irrelevant to this film. and even if he is pretentious and resents his fame and fans, who cares? his films are still good and worth watching.
i had always considered myself a huge woody allen fan, from his early slapstick to his later comi/tragi/dramas, but had neglected seeing this film for some reason.
i finally watched it the other nite and hands down, it is my FAVORITE of his films. what artistic audacity it is to parody and pay homage to Fellini at the same time and also become a unique film in its own right.
According to Woody, the film's lead character is not indicative of himself; the subject matter does not reflect his own experiences and views. I think many people finding the film to be pretentious might be missing this point. I had the same thoughts before reading a number of interviews where he addressed this issue. I suppose when a lead role is played by the same person doing the writing and directing -a rare occurrence- that it's easy to make this assumption.
Hehe ahhh no!! That is why this movie is so beautiful, it is quite the opposite... it's intellectual, self-exploratory, self-deprecating, exegetic, quixotic art.

@jjdecani Self-obsessed? Narcissistic? Sandy Bates is not Woody Allen. Stardust Memories is his tribute to Fellini. Stardust Memories is to Fellini's 8½ as Interiors is to Bergman.

Are there any intrepid entertainment lawyers out there who are interested in prosecuting Woody for ripping off Fellini's 8 1/2 without demonstrating a shred of art, delicacy, sensitivity, poetry or good acting? Or has the statute of limitations expired on plagiarism?
Art imitating life. Life imitating art. Themes of 8 1/2 & Stardust. This film was withdrawn from the theaters for several months because of John Lennons murders which happened during Stardust release. To the cinematically ignorant. This is no more of a rip off than 8 1/2 is of Last night at Marinbad. Still, this is my fave Woody film and 8 1/2 my all time favorite. As Marcello said: " I have nothing to say, but I want to say it anyway!"
Though it "rips-off" Fellini's 8 1/2 and smacks resoundingly of Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels (1942), Stardust Memories is undeniably Woody's misunderstood masterpiece, remarkable and beautiful.
I dont think youre accurate when you say it is woody allens "misunderstood" masterpiece. I think it is fair to say you do not understand it. But to speak for the masses would be incorrect, I enjoy this movie and understand the scattered structure, there is a plot, there is a track, and there is motion to this film, from start to finish you may not recognize it, but walk into a room thats playing this movie and you can understand it @ any moment.
Jessica Harper, after all this time, I first saw this film one late evening while stoned and tinged with a wee bit of opium and Jessica Harper was on the screen talking from the insane asylum, so perfect, and emotional and controlled and real. I always thought that it was Jaquelyn Bisset, until now, I am glad that someone else loved that scene as muchas I.
Annie Hall is incomparable. It is one of his most original pieces. How can you say an interpretation of 8 1/2 is a better piece (sitting in a theater or not?)
I think this is Woody's most underrated film. Maybe some of his critics and fans took it too personally and literally, as if he was telling them all to go to hell. I don't get that impression at all -- it's a damn funny movie, and the Woodman gives great Fellini!
Oh, and it also helps that I adore Charlotte Rampling.

This movie was when Allen finally lost me.
Sorry, it's pretentious, self-obsessed, narcissistic, arse-regarding tripe.

There is no such thing as plagiarism in movies and arts, only inspirations.. should we sue Francis Bacons Oedipus and Sphinx? Or Dalis
El Greco cross?

just to correct myself it's moonlight serenade as performed by the Glenn Miller orchestra. Its the atmospheric ballad that plays near the end.

I think in terms of Woody's original and true brilliant piece, Annie Hall, this is simply a great reinterpretation of 8 1/2.

...or his moon-lit serenede to 8 1/2. Sitting in a movie theatre, Stardust Memories is his best work.

I didn't say Stardust Memories is an interpretation of 8 1/2, you did. And if you're comparing, Annie Hall is a better draft of Play it Again, Sam.
