And also, why is it that the media sees a black person and automatically thinks "Monkey"? Until this string of terrible journalism, it hadn't even occured to me that this could be racism. People throw stuff on the ice all the time. Stop making a mountain out of a mole hill.

@TimothyDRiel did it ever occur to you that maybe he just thought about it when Simmonds came on the ice? I'm Japanese and I play hockey in Canada, when we go away for tournaments even the parents make racial comments. Racism happen everywhere, it doesn't matter what the intention was, when things like that happen and people don't like it, it has to stop. when you don't have to go through stuff like that, you just don't know what racism really is even when you think you do.

@JhockeyKM91 I'm sorry you have to deal with racism. I just think that it's not prudent to label this particular incident as racism without knowing who threw the banana. Also, I get very angry when people equate black people with monkeys. In this case the media, quickly equating Simmonds with a monkey, decided that junk getting thrown on the ice was racism... Is every other time stuff gets thrown on the ice also racism?

@MrTimisfat you are missing the point, this is one individual that threw the banana, not the whole capacity of the rink, when there wasn't any reason for him/her to throw it on the rink. was he/she trying to distract him? maybe, but then why was it just Simmonds?

My point is, without any real proof people have a) noticed Simmonds Race and assumed that MUST be the reason for the act. b) because he is black the banana must be a taunt at his monkey-ness? and c) the banana thrower MUST have been a racist because ONLY people who AREN'T black would watch hockey and finally, d) THIS racist had foresight enough to bring a banana and also KNEW the game would go to a Shoot-Out AND that Simmonds would shoot.

You'll find racists anywhere you go. I've been to London a number of times and never had a problem with the place. It's sad to see this happen.
On the bright side, at least Simmonds scored on the penalty shot.
