Believe it or not, this tree has probably thrived. Each type of tree has different needs; this one can easily tolerate severe pruning of root & branches. Bonsai is an ancient art & began with trees collected from nature or gardens, like this one. Further development of branch shape will be done as it sprouts - but this size trunk would likely never happen in a pot. Look at other videos by same people - they know what they are doing.
This is most definitely not the way to collect material for bonsai,if it survives it won't make a particular great bonsai so why dig it up in the first place, good material should be removed in stages over a period of time ideally
@SomTamKaoNiaow1 the happy ending... well somone will take care of this tree like a baby, left in the wood it will grow into a nice plant but then get ripped up for a road and burnt... he has been saved and ppl will look at it and see it as a thing of beauty,,, a tree born and destined for a great life
@Andrezj100 - It is understandable that you might think that, but the ancient art of growing minature potted trees as practiced in Asia began with collected trees. This is not cheating - it's TRADITION.
bougain villa? personally i don't prefer shrubs turned to bonsai. it's fake bonsai for me.
my perception of bonsai is how to turn a naturally large tree (not a shrub) into a miniature form of itself. although shrubs like this can become bonsai but where's the challenge?
For all of you who don't understand it, they have found the tree they want to turn into a bonsai and are removing it so that they can then take it to the shop to trim the roots and branches. This is how you create a bonsai. Read the description people.
@matimaui Nope! The leaf size is reduced by increasing the branch ramification. the more branches a tree has the smaller the leaves become. hope this helps.
Bonsaiking, I would say great selection of branches and posting this plant. But i forsee it will take at least 10 years to go for proper shaping. 10 more years for new branches grow in disire spot and recovering of wounds. Most of Bonsai lover don't have such patient to wait. Out of 10 dug up, you might end up choosing 1 of the best to display. Why not encourage them to buy semi completed one?
Should be titled "How NOT to field collect" I was looking for info on the correct way to field collect. Even being a novice I KNOW this is not the right way
who the fuck digs a tree out like that u stupeid murders even a 10 year old isnt as stupied as you if anyone reads this dont do what they did i tryed this and the tree died two weeks later they distroyed all the major roots
@sunjinn I'm sure the shrub survived. It the branches and leaves are cut back hard, then the shrub will root out again and recover. If you're so worried about people "murdering" plants, perhaps you should stop using all paper products, hmm?
so it has been almost two years since this video was posted. How about a picture that proves the tree survived the ordeal? Think we'll get one? I personally doubt it because I'm pretty damn sure this tree died within a couple weeks or less of this horrible, disgusting treatment. Shame on you guys. Learn what the fuck you are doing before you go out and collect yamadori.
We've had less primary roots before, and the plants have survived. I actually did it to two rose bushes recently which are both growing strongly now. Without the foliage the plant can put energy into rooting ... foliage WILL return. I don't think though that a beginner ought to go out and bring in an existing shrub - start with a nursery specimen or something similar! LOL ... very interesting vid, though the music is a bit distracting.
If any beginners are watching this video, please note that this is NOT the way to dig a tree. No respect or horticultural technique was shown whatsoever. Disgusting at best.
That's now how you dig up a tree! You're supposed to leave most of the root ball, and at the most cut out the feeder roots, but not as many as they did. I don't think that tree will be happy with that much root-removal. I think that bougainvillea with be quite stressed.
it could defo have survived, but you did treat it pretty rough! if i did that here in ireland it wouldnt be likely to survive. whats it look like now?
Sorry, i just realized this is in the philippines and you have bouganvilla over there. so this plant may very well have survived. for any one who doesnt know, bouganvilla root so easaly you can cut a branch off stick it in a box for a couple of weeks, take it out. and plant it. and with a little TLC it will pick right up and grow like crazy. true story, air port lost my "luggage"
Any body who watched this video, PLEASE dont go dig up a tree without doing some research first. Read a bonsai book. or better yet find a bonsai club in your area and talk to some one there. you will have a much better chance of keeping it alive. and if there nice they might give you an idea about where to collect. Most trees will not survive the kind of treatment they show in the video. and it would be a shame if some one killed an ancient tree out of ignorance as im sure "BonsaiKing" has
@0szans Your right, if you cant get a good root ball (almost all of it) then you should dig around the tree or under and leave it for a year (or two) for roots to grow back and then dig it out the rest of the way
You should always collect a tree with soil intact as in the whole root ball NEVER dig out the tree like this it wont have a good chance of survival....FAIL big time!
Agreed. I'll bet my left testicle this tree died in about a month or less. Removing all the soil is a great way to kill a tree that you've just dug up. They did a VERY poor job and should be ashamed. NO ONE TAKE THIS VIDEO SERIOUSLY!!! If you dig up a tree like this, you WILL kill it. FAIL!!!!!!!!
haha, i love how they used a pack of reds for size comparison at 5:01. lol.... but i hope the tree lived, it seems a plant of that size going through such a traumatic experiance would be stressed beyond its limits. good luck, and the tree looks great... that is, if its not dead. lol
hala cege lagare... hahaha... yung violet ba yan? mas maganda yung violet na bulaklak kc napapaliit nun ang dahon.. check my bonsai...kaso kulekta ko lahat large bonsai... try mo ang bignay na puno... ang ganda lalo na pag large and pag namunga na.. neway nice vid..
yeah, let's see a follow up on that. The root pruning was very very hard.

I know nothing about the hunting, but that's the music to bury the warrior who died saving your village, not for ripping out a tree.
