As Kostaros already said, Koine is the language that we use today and has been constantly used in Greece for the past two millenia, with slow evolution to modern day demotic. There is huge amount of evidence for that. The word "Koine" (Κοινή) in Greek means "common". And indeed we use this word in everyday life, just as the rest of the language. Demotic is spoken and written since the 12th century evolving from Koine, which in turn evolved from classical Greek.
