I love Glen no matter what. I wish he would have took a more edgier approach in his career with a Pet Sounds-type direction, instead of the Wichita Lineman approach. I love him with a backing like this, and less country. I guess he chose his path to set himself apart from his Beach Boys past. The music he was making before his big hits really stands out today in this instant gratification kind of media consumption society. It makes me thankful for his early songs.
A great song and vocal performance from Glen, but the stupid girls gyrating in the background almost ruins it. Too damn cheesy. Let the music speak for itself.
It's got a great Spector-esque production don't it.And you can hear how the melody and vocal phrasing are pure Brian.Possibly influenced by 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling'?
So "Brian" yet you can hear the Bacharach influence too. If that weren't enough, the multi-talented Campbell on vocals... A combo that gets into your head and stays there for days! Love this song!
The title is misleading. Yes the Beach Boys (and The Honeys) did the background parts, but this was a completely Glen Campbell solo tune that was written and produced by Brian Wilson.
BW wrote this for Dennis, & because Glen was playing for BW in concert, he produced the song for him; gorgeous vocals, & the best Glen ever did. Should have been a bigger hit ! Wolfsky9
I read somewhere (don't remember) that when Glen quit the Beach Boys to do a solo career...Brian told him it was kinda dumb of him to do so at that time because he was getting well known as a Beach Boy. Glen replied:
"Guess i'm dumb". LOL Then, Brian being Brian...went in and immediately wrote this song and made it a romantic one. I wonder if it's all true?
the beatles and beach boys thrived on each others talents,as did the motown label.thats why all their music just got better and better during the middle to late 60's..also the beach boys made some fantastic tracks without brian and dennis wilson is my big hero.
Glen Campbell used to play session guitar for the Beach Boys on some of their biggest hits and then he was asked to join them on live performances for a while.

Smiley Smile 1 > Let us be serious and let us consider the facts. «Cigs messed up his creativity» that's nonsense. Cigs may not be good for health, but how the heck should cigs influence one's creativity? That's just really silly.
Brian and VDP stated that Mike's stubborn resistance was the major reason for the decision to scrap Smile. AFTER this fatal blow, Brian's health deteriorated. Drugs may not have helped, but without Mike's silly comments, everything might have turned out fine.
lol are you serious? Who do we blame in todays society of smoking and taking drugs? We don't hold ourselves accountable, Are you blaming Mike for Brian smoking and taking drugs? All I am saying is SMOKING killed his voice. It is documented he smoked heavily for at least 2 years he was laying in his bed. That ruined his voice. The drugs effected his brain. The food and lack of exercise made him fat. Not washing and shaving his hair became lank and greasy. He turned into an unrecognisable slob :(
Smiley Smile 1 > I am serious. You said «cigs messed up his creativity», this is absurd. I don't think that Brian's voice got «killed». If you listen to «BW Presents Smile», you'll see that Brian still has a very beautiful voice.
I am blaming Mike for Brian losing confidence in his talent. Mike's comment (as cousin and lead singer) was very important for Brian. By saying «No» to Smile, Mike was the main culprit for the scrapping of Smile and for the deterioration of Brian's health.
lol the drugs messed up his 'creativity' lets face it. The cigs messed up his natural voice (falsetto) and he has NEVER recovered. 2 to 3 yrs he destroyed his vocals and his mind. Why blame Mike for having an opinion. We will never know the truth. However wasn't Brian under the 'influence' when creating Smile? Mike disapproved of drugs. The guy didn't even smoke. All I am saying is the cigs and drugs destroyed future potential of this great man and I am sad because of that :(
«He has never recovered» are you deaf? Brian still has a remarkable voice. I feel sorry for you if you stubbornly don't want to acknowledge the facts in order to maintain your ridiculous «drugs-killed-Brian» theory. Why blame Mike? Because it's easy to see that Brian's health deteriorated right from the moment when Mike complained about VDPs wonderful lyrics.
I have loved the BBYS since 14 back in 1981. Now lets not insult my intelligence please. Brians voice did improve overtime but has NEVER recovered from the abuse. If you hate ML like you say you do then you are not a true BB fan. ML isn't perfect but he was just expressing his opinions in his way ref the direction the way he wanted their music to go. "Don't f*ck with the formula" as he would say. Brian had foresight and vision Mike didn't understand. Nor initially did others in that era.
Yes I am a huge BBs fan since 1980. Obviously, the BBs consisted of Brian Wilson plus studio musicians plus relatives who acted as studio singers and live act. Mike's «don't f*** with the formula» was about the stupidest thing any musician ever said. By saying this, Mike ruined the reputation of the BBs. With Smile, the BBs would've been the coolest group. Thanks to Mike Love, the BBs were regarded as a bunch of fools, and thanks to Mike's rant, Brian got very ill. I hate Mike so much!
Most of Smile was created when Brian was under the influence of drugs. Even I will say some stuff was weird. He was experimenting. It was bound to have spooked Mike and others (which it did) it was a transitional period which NOBODY was used to. It took somebody like Brian who had a creative mind. Brian was actiing irrational which was down to the drugs. He was a sensitive soul. Put yourself in Mikes shoes. He didn't understand where Brian was going. Brian was ill through his own abuse.
Smile was not «weird». Smile was new. Smile was beautiful. Listen to Surf's Up, Wonderful, Heroes And Villains... It's obvious that those songs were the work of a Genius. With Smile, the BBs would have pulverized the Beatles.
But ML ruined it all. ML did not want to be part of something new. ML wanted to repeat simple, stupid songs ad nauseam. ML is not a musician. He wanted to be famous and scr*w girls. Brian should have sacked ML. Brian could sing all parts, he did not need ML!
If Brian hadn't abused his own health who knows what he could have achieved. The Beatles were overated anyway like 3 chord Oasis today. The 'hipper' the band the more popular they are in terms of people like to say there favourite band is..unlike the BBYS people didn't want to admit it. I agree on some songs ML put out were lame and not credible. Quality of quantity any day. But I love the BBYS. I have met Brian twice and saw hime 4 times. I love the guy. But I don't hate any of the BBYS.
You can't prove your «drugs-killed-Brian» theory. However, it's obvious that Mike's resistance was devastating for Brian's health. Brian was very dependent on the opinion of his mates. Put yourself in Brian's shoes: He worked very hard, and when his cousin walked in and said «your music is sh*t», Brian was very unhappy and he eventually fell ill. Thus, Mike Love is guilty for making Brian unhappy and eventually ill. I hate Mike Love! He should have put in prison for what he did to Brian!
lol don't be daft. There are to many 'yes' men out there. ML just told Brian what he thought at the time. Brian had so much on his shoulders by the record company, touring etc that he couldn't cope and retired to his bed. I think ML was a little jealous of Brian. But I think they all contributed in the band. Yes, Brian more than others with his compositions. Truthfully, without Brian they were cruising in the next decades with there back catalogue. So didn't progress after surfs up/sunflower.
You are a Liar. Mike's rant was not «just an opinion». By saying No to Smile, Mike Love killed a promising project, and he killed the reputation of the BBs as a major creative force. It's very hard to create something as beautiful as Smile. But it's quite easy to say No. What a moron ML is!
Brian was very busy until the day Mike came back. Just think how hard it was for Brian to scrap Smile everybody thought he was a Loser. This was fatal for his health, and it's clearly Mike's fault!
Once more you're wrong. Ever heard of The Beatles? Well all of them stopped touring after 1966. Nevertheless they reached the masses: Penny Lane Nr 1 in US charts, All You Need Is Love Nr 1, Hey Jude Nr 1 etc. The truth is: Mike Love's live apperances were (still are) totally superfluous! After 1966, the BBs were a lousy live act anyway. They could not perform songs such as Good Vibrations live on stage. The songs became too complicated to perform live. And Mike had such a thin live voice.
ever heard of the Spice Girls? lol They had lots of success but who was buying there records? Kids! The same as the Beatles. They were screaming so loud the Beatles themselves couldn't hear themselves. The kids weren't interested in the music. Same as boy bands these days. Without Brian and I mean the young Brian the band weren't as good. They needed his vocals thats for sure. Anyway you need to moooooooove on from hating Mike. Just enjoy the memories :)
The Beatles were the best and most influential rock group ever. By comparing the Beatles with the Spice Girls and boy bands, you show how little you know about music. The Beatles even influenced Brian Wilson: he compared himself with the Beatles, he wanted to be as good as them. He was, to be sure.
There are so many reasons for hating Mike Love. I will never stop hating that evil man.
Without Brian, the BBs would have been nothing.
Without Mike, the BBs would have been the coolest group.
The Beatles overrated? Don't be silly. No other group created so many immortal songs. No other group influenced so many other musicians. The Beatles were (still are) the pacemakers of the music scene... I could go on and on.
Brian was more gifted? That's just as silly. Come on, there's no need at all to find out who was «better». We're talking about music, not bloody sports! The Beatles made great music, so did Brian Wilson. Mike Love, however, has accomplished nothing at all. I hate him!
Brian and the Beach Boys touched places in me the Beatles could never do. If he didn't suffer from the abuse then he would have succeeded beyond everybody else. Again listen to Brians music.
The Beatles were another rock n roll band the Beach Boys were a harmony symphony. Good Vibrations and God Only Knows were better than anything the Beatles did. Might not be your opinion or many others but if you listen to the complexity of the songs when they were composed 40 yrs ago. I think the Beatles were dead jealous and could not admit that Brian was far more superior in his compositions.
You are uttering sheer nonsense. The Beatles were never jealous. It is well known that the Beatles did admire Brian Wilson's music. However, it's so stupid to say that Brian was «superior». In this big world of ours, there is ample room for both the Beatles and Brian Wilson. The Beatles made wonderful, complex songs. Brian Wilson made wonderful, complex songs. I admire the Beatles AND Brian Wilson. But I hate Mike Love. If Brian did not suffer from Mike Love, he'd have succeeded.
This song was recorded (and then apparently tossed out) by the Beach Boys in 1964. It was originally meant to be on their Today! album in early '65. Apparently, the backing vocals at the 00:55 second mark and the subsequent same backing vocals ("Guess I'm dumb!" at the 1:10 mark), etc. are Brian and Carl Wilson.
The Honey's sing backup at the 1:18 and 2:13 marks.
And yes, it is Brian at the 2:24 mark saying "awesome."
Actually, he says "Hey that was outtasight...come on up" telling Glen to come in to the booth and hear it back. It's clear to hear on the SEA OF TUNES bootleg sets.
One of the few records that brightened my dismal 80's. Drunk as a skunk with the curtains drawn one night, an old girlfriend stopped by after her afternoon's junk shop spree. When I saw this yellow and orange 45, I told her that I was stealing it from her and she would have to hack me to death to reclaim it (think I might have even offered the knife). "Oh I got that for you anyway, you dope," was her foolish response. After I'd played it, she looked both glum and dumb. Guess she was.
actaully not true, they played on all their albums, yes pet sounds too, but the wrecking crew helped them out! :) Otherwise the beach boys were of course, wonderful singers, but excellent musicians!
i didn't think the band was around for the backing sessions... for pet sounds they were on tour in japan for most of it. carl played guitar on the occasional session, too (eg, california girls intro). but as brian progressed as a producer he used the band less and less (including himself on bass). the band is completely absent on good vibrations too. but once brian 'gave up' for a while, the band played on the records again: wild honey, friends etc. it doesn't matter. session musicians are fine.
You said it. I consider myself well versed on Brian Wilson / BB history and can't believe I'm just discovering this. Props to Glen Campbell...this really sounds like it's right off of Pet Sounds. Was Tony Asher involved?
My dad used to see Glen Campbell back when he used to play the roadhouses and juke joints on old U.S. Highway 90 outside of Houston back in the late 1950s and early 60s.
i luv Glen Campbell, tho he was born in the US he's Scottish/Irish by descent!,seems like all great things originaly came from Scotland!..Elvis,Neil Young,Joni Mitchell etc all have Scots ancestry!,that makes me very proud!.x
Yes he was! However he WAS a cutie!

So didn't progress after surfs up/sunflower.
smileysmile1 2 years ago
You are a Liar. Mike's rant was not «just an opinion». By saying No to Smile, Mike Love killed a promising project, and he killed the reputation of the BBs as a major creative force. It's very hard to create something as beautiful as Smile. But it's quite easy to say No. What a moron ML is!
Brian was very busy until the day Mike came back. Just think how hard it was for Brian to scrap Smile everybody thought he was a Loser. This was fatal for his health, and it's clearly Mike's fault!

You are mad! Brian stopped touring after 1964 and without the tours the music wouldn't have reached the masses. How can you slag him off?
smileysmile1 2 years ago
Once more you're wrong. Ever heard of The Beatles? Well all of them stopped touring after 1966. Nevertheless they reached the masses: Penny Lane Nr 1 in US charts, All You Need Is Love Nr 1, Hey Jude Nr 1 etc. The truth is: Mike Love's live apperances were (still are) totally superfluous! After 1966, the BBs were a lousy live act anyway. They could not perform songs such as Good Vibrations live on stage. The songs became too complicated to perform live. And Mike had such a thin live voice.
1ndi64 2 years ago
ever heard of the Spice Girls? lol They had lots of success but who was buying there records? Just enjoy the memories :)
smileysmile1 2 years ago

I hate him!
1ndi64 2 years ago 2
Brian and the Beach Boys touched places in me the Beatles could never do. If he didn't suffer from the abuse then he would have succeeded beyond everybody else. Again listen to Brians music.
smileysmile1 2 years ago
The Beatles were another rock n roll band the Beach Boys were a harmony symphony. Good Vibrations and God Only Knows were better than anything the Beatles did. Might not be your opinion or many others but if you listen to the complexity of the songs when they were composed 40 yrs ago. I think the Beatles were dead jealous and could not admit that Brian was far more superior in his compositions.
smileysmile1 2 years ago
You are uttering sheer nonsense. The Beatles were never jealous. It is well known that the Beatles did admire Brian Wilson's music. However, it's so stupid to say that Brian was «superior». In this big world of ours, there is ample room for both the Beatles and Brian Wilson. The Beatles made wonderful, complex songs. Brian Wilson made wonderful, complex songs. I admire the Beatles AND Brian Wilson. But I hate Mike Love. If Brian did not suffer from Mike Love, he'd have succeeded.

this is just brilliant. Brian was a madman to throw this out

I hear the big Burt Bacharach influence on Brian's composing in this song. Very pretty, and very well sung by Glen Campbell.
Those dancers, however...LOL.

This is a most beautiful song. Don't know why it was tossed out.
prettycountrygirl2 3 years ago 10
probably because Glen wasn't family....The Wilson's dad was the manager...
Dukabor 2 years ago

Other than that, you're spot on.

Too bad it didn't make the track list for Today! - Would have been a strong addtition to side 2.

What a great song. Would have been perfect for Pet Sounds. CHeck out my collection of super obscure wonderful pop video clips at

Glenn was the first Beach Boy to play on a Beach Boy LP. Yeah no kidding!!
rockerdude59 3 years ago
the beach boys are the only musicians on their first (pre-capitol) 45 and the first album 'surfin safari'.
john66 3 years ago
actaully not true, they played on all their albums, yes pet sounds too, but the wrecking crew helped them out! :) Otherwise the beach boys were of course, wonderful singers, but excellent musicians!
iwojima654 2 years ago
i didn't think the band was around for the backing sessions... for pet sounds they were on tour in japan for most of it. carl played guitar on the occasional session, too (eg, california girls intro). but as brian progressed as a producer he used the band less and less (including himself on bass). the band is completely absent on good vibrations too. but once brian 'gave up' for a while, the band played on the records again: wild honey, friends etc. it doesn't matter. session musicians are fine.
john66 2 years ago 2
uh, the wrecking crew plays all the music on Pet Sounds. The Beach Boys do all the singing. That's how it was recorded.
iferraro 2 years ago
@iferraro Carl and Brian also played on a few, but you're basically correct -- it's about 90% session players.

You said it. I consider myself well versed on Brian Wilson / BB history and can't believe I'm just discovering this. Props to Glen Campbell...this really sounds like it's right off of Pet Sounds. Was Tony Asher involved?

The living legend of Glen Travis Campbell...
The dancing girls in the background are as cheesy as it gets, but Glen is a top-notch pop vocalist who sings Brian Wilson better than Brian Wilson!
Like Ronnie Milsap, glen has always been so much more than just a country singer, and this song proves it.
BloozeDaddy76 3 years ago
You do realize he's lip-synching, right? Brian did the same yes, but he was just as good as Campbell live.
Adema1226 3 years ago
I believe Glen said Brian wrote this for him
when he decided to leave the Beach Boys to pursue a solo career. Brian told him he was dumb
to do so and Glen said I guess I am.
