I could do the splits about five years ago but got a cramp in the gluteal muscles of the backmost leg every time I did it. Needless to say, it wasn't very pleasant, so I quit doing it. Now I'm trying to gain enough flexibility to do it again - this time a bit more thoroughly.
@khetab420hasam I would urge you not to be discouraged. My theory is that my gluteal muscles just weren't warm and/or stretched enough - a problem I never sought to solve when I was training. This time, I'm giving my hips a real thorough stretch every time in order to avoid that problem.
Also, I might add, none of my friends had the same problem. Those statistics make it seem unlikely that you would encounter the same problem.

Cutenadiaxoxo, yes it does. I am a gymnast and I help train little kids at my gym all the time and the average legnth of time that it takes them to get their splits is 3-4 weeks. You may just be lucky and/or a quicker learner.(:

I can do a right front split fairly well, my left is not there... But it kills me trying to do the side splits because my weird... double jointed type hip things start to hurt...

do hamstring stretches sitting down and standing up, and sit in straddle then go lean to your left and then right and leftr again etc for a while but make you sure you have your knees stretched(:
there's not really a way you can teach someone how to do the splits, it's just a matter of time doing stretches or how genetically flexible you are to go all the way down into the splits.
I've got girls at my dance school who are naturally flexible but don't know it so they come to dance and in the stretch of class the teacher asks for you hands in fifth position and the go flat in splits naturally because all they had to be broken (as in push and they just fall into place)
yeah, i was naturally like that! But all you need to keep doing is stretching everyday to get then down, do lunges and stuff. The butterfly helps too! And youll get em!

you have to move you left hip forward.....what I do is put my hands on my hip bones and see if both of my hands are parallel. Also I see if I can see both of my hands. It looks like you could be doing the middle splits
you are right. if you are in your left split then the left but bone should be on the floor along with the right iliacus hip flexor area on the floor. and vice versa for the right split.

i taught myself to do it, just sit on a flat surface with ur legs straight infront of you and lean forward so u r touching your toes. This may hurt a little to begin with because you are stretching your tendons but if you keep at it your tendons will be come flimsy and u'll b able to do the splits. try not to push yourself too far because you can pull or even tear a muscle.

I know for a fact that the legs should not be turned out like you said. In a split the knees should be up and down. the front knee up to the ceiling and the back knee facing the ground.
Yeah, i have the same problem as you and hazelbell12, but its only my left leg, cuz i didnt even it out when i wuz young, so i can do my righ tleg, but not my left =D LOL...that sucks! I can do the splits,You need to take your time its not easy at first if you do it the first time you just get a shock because you think it hurts,It will only hurt the first couple of times until you get used to it after a while you can just drop into them.And they only will hurt because your not used to using the musscles in your legs.

i taught myself to do it, just sit on a flat surface with ur legs straight infront of you and lean forward so u r touching your toes. This may hurt a little to begin with because you are stretching your tendons but if you keep at it your tendons will be come flimsy and u'll b able to do the splits. try not to push yourself too far because you can pull or even tear a muscle.

you are wrong. you want to keep your hips straight (i mean the person who made the vid). turning your hips out wont do anything. and all the people who are showing this dont rlly have the body to dance. sorry.

there isn't a specific body you need to dance.
I know plenty of people who don't fit the dancer stereotype, and can dance a lot better than most of those who fit it.

I know for a fact that the legs should not be turned out like you said. In a split the knees should be up and down. the front knee up to the ceiling and the back knee facing the ground.

if you work on it sensibly once a day for 5-10 minutes it will gradually help to stretch and it will come easier with time.

That's not a good split. Your knee is rotated outside, but it's supposed to be lying on the ground.

Yeah, i have the same problem as you and hazelbell12, but its only my left leg, cuz i didnt even it out when i wuz young, so i can do my righ tleg, but not my left =D LOL...that sucks! But um...jus keep pracicing and keep ur hands on the floor and just try and keep ur knee up...? i think thats just cuz ur too lazy to hold it cuz u get tired. thats what happens to me on my left leg =D

It takes about 10 minutes, if you stretch out reallyyyyyyyy good.
I can only do a split on my left leg, but once you can get into a split its not that hard to stay down.
But otherwise, its pretty easy.

I can do the splits,You need to take your time its not easy at first if you do it the first time you just get a shock because you think it hurts,It will only hurt the first couple of times until you get used to it after a while you can just drop into them.And they only will hurt because your not used to using the musscles in your legs.

you dont really do any other stretches so people dont know how to stretch before they attmpt the splits,if anyone wants to see more stretches to increase the chances of doing the splits, then click on my name, i learned how to do thesplits easily by doing the stretches.
