@TheWhiteTrashNetwork I don't make a dime off of this. It's copy written material so I can't claim it's mine, and thus, I make no money on it. Youtube puts ads on the video once it reaches X number of views. Since I don't own all the rights to the video, I can't take the ads off either.
@Celdoir I have inserted my foot in my mouth and my own arse. I am sorry for jumping to conclusions. I saw the ad and just assumed. I hope you will accept my apology. :)
@Celdoir live with the ads. these days, its the only thing that keeps youtube alive. think about it. do you know how many videos get uploaded each second which never reach 50 views yet take up millions of gigabytes of storage? lots of them. i dont know how many videos there are on youtube, but its a huge number, and it grows daily. without ads, youtube has no way of generating income, and it would probably not exist anymore.
@BHLongboards May I say, I proudly call myself a nerd, and I love this song. So please, I ask of you, don't connect the fine nerd name with trolls such as camilocarena. It's insulting to the rest of us glasses-wearing, Doctor Who-loving, good music-appreciating nerds. ;)
@frithar Ah, for me it's a tie between 10 and 11. As much as I love fezs and bow ties, I can't give up my love for David's Doctor. They are both fantastic... no? :D
@TheFlameingBurito There's a doctor who discussion on a decemberists video and I'm not yet involved?
IMO Matt Smith fits the role of a more crazy - more eccentric - doctor, bowtie and all. While David also tried to play an eccentric doctor, he didn't fit the role as much as the young Matt Smtih. Thats why I prefer #11.
@jacobthelioneater Eh, that may be true but David was my first Doctor, so when I think Doctor Who, the first one I think of is ten. Then a little parade of suspenders and bowties come in and then I'm like "oh yeah! You're awesome too!"
Also, I screamed like a little fangirl when I saw David in Fright Night. Off topic, but I felt I needed to put that out there. :)
@TheFlameingBurito My first doctor was the 9th doctor. Not that he was a bad actor, but Rose was the worst companion ever because the only things she did was screw up. The writing back then was also really shoddy, and the episodes were often lame.
@jacobthelioneater Agreed, but you do have to give a little slack seeing as they were fumbling around trying to resurrect a legend. Understandbly, it would take them a bit to get into the groove of the series.
I've been thinking about it, and I think the whole point of this song is to rhyme notoriously hard to rhyme words. Daughter - water, aluminum - cinnamon, dirigible - untraceable (JUST FOR KICKS).
I love deftones, tool, radiohead, chevelle and so on. This song is just as impactful as a song with heavy distortion and deep vocals, because Colin is a soul tocuher. See- mariners revenge, and the rakes song. AWESOME!!!!
@camilocarena Just because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it's boring, it just means you don't like it. For example I think most (if not all) top 40s music is boring, drunk, mindless shit, but that doesn't mean it's not interesting and enjoyable for others. If you don't like it, why comment and insult others who see the brilliance in these carefully crafted masterpieces.
why do people sing songs about this? i don't get it, and i don't think i'm glossing over some well-veiled intellectual element to this music. you're all just insane.
Listen closely. The song is about people escaping their warstruck homeland to find a new place to live, but are doomed to fail because they have no Idea what they're doing. they're hopeful, but probably won't make it.
Build a house with aluminum and see how sturdy it is. fill your mouth with a spoonful of cinnamon and see how pleasant that experience is.
Either that, or its about escaping a bomb, and the song is being sung to cheer up survivors.
@swordsmaster101 Yes, I have filled my moth with cinnamon and it was a fairly nasty experience. I regretted that comment after I posted it, but I had a bet that I would find a decemberists song where it does not end badly for any characters. I think Billy Liar qualifies.
@swordsmaster101 I definitely didn't notice that before. Look up "the cinnamon challenge" on youtube and you'll see just how right you are about the cinnamon... but if you have a weak stomach don't watch the videos, some people seriously get sick.

id never heard of the decemberists until my drama group started playing it constantly. and i fell in love with them. i think this song is my favorite of them...its like beatles. but not. its better. :)
I always wrote the Decemberists off as emo or something like that. I was ignant. This band isn't a few teens complaining about how horrible their suburban lives are, it's so much more. I don't know what I was thinking. This really is an amazing band. And such a beautiful song. Such beautiful memories. Thank you for existing Decemberists.
I can't say I'm anywhere approaching an expert on the Decemberists, but I have clicked around a bit, and I'm fairly fond of some of the songs from Castaways and Cutouts--Leslie Anne Levine and The Legionnaire's Lament among them. Also, Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect, and July, July.

Colin Meloy is such an incredible lyricist. This entire album (The Crane Wife) is superbly well put together and a must have for any Decemberist enthusiast

Esse sentimento ao que parece só é possível ter não com a terra, nem com a mãe, por que nenhuma dela é o fim (com sentido inclusive de destino).
I LOVE The Hazards of Love. It's like an intricate, heartfelt puzzle-like story, and every time I listen to it, it's like another piece comes into place.
I was possessed by the end from singing "we'll build our walls aluminum, we'll fill our mouths with cinnamon" at the concert 300 times in a row!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have just discovered them as well, I like about 5 songs by them in an hour, so yeah they are really good, a hidden gem, that might become more popular ( they deserve to ).
One really good record from The Decemberists nobody ever seems to mention is Picaresqueties. It's just an EP, and it's only got four (five, sort of) songs, but it's incredibly, incredibly good. Try that.
Also, yeah, Hazards of Love kicks ass, as does its spiritual predecessor, The Tain.
Personally I like Picaresque and The Crane Wife. The random stories of Picaresque are great and the crane wife is amazing in how it has several arcing songs (crane wife 1-3). I prefer those to The Hazards of Love as I'm not so fond of an over arcing themed album, but it's still amazing. All their albums have something different and new to offer.
@Celdoir Definitely second both picaresque and the crane wife. My first introduction to the decemberists was the crane wife playing as an instore play at barnes and noble, i then bought every decemberists cd we had... :D... Colin Meloy...
@FrozenThorns I actually like Hazards of Love, but know that it is one gigantic song, mostly. You can listen to them individually, but whereas most albums can run on random, Hazards is meant to be played in order only. If you can find it, check out the EP that contains only one track, The Tain. It is a 5 part, 21-minute-long poem that is great.Other than that, Picaresque and Crane Wife albums are amazing. From the album Castaways and Cutouts, I recommend "July, July" and "A Cautionary Tale"
yeah...i know what you mean. i like it when musicians let the song speak in its own way for the individual listener. we can each interpret it in our own way, yet the way it was intended, if we want. does that make sense? haha
No, The Decemberists are from Portland, Oregon I believe. There is a chance I could be wrong but I know for sure they're from a northern U.S. port town.
I was in a variety show and one of the acts after my group did this song. They had an acoustic guitar, an acoustic bass guitar, an accordion, a fiddle, and a trumpet and it made for a really awesome sound. We in the audience got to sing the "hear all the bombs fade away" line, too, and some people did improvised harmony, it was chillingly good.
Saw Colin solo in his hometown of Helena, MT and he played this and he split the crowd of about a hundred people in half and we did a round of this song! I met him after the show and he's really nice!
DIRIGIBLE is now my favourite word :D

One really good record from The Decemberists nobody ever seems to mention is Picaresqueties. It's just an EP, and it's only got four (five, sort of) songs, but it's incredibly, incredibly good. Try that.
Also, yeah, Hazards of Love kicks ass, as does its spiritual predecessor, The Tain.

I'd suggest California One and Youth and Beauty Brigade from their Castaways and Cutouts album.
Another favorite of mine is The Gymnist, High Above the Ground from their Her Majesty album.
Also, listen to all of The Hazards of Love, from start to finish. It's a wonderful experience.

they're so good! i'm just starting to get into them. does anybody have any recommendation for any other of their songs/albums?

I like how it means something, yet somehow it doesn't.... What I mean is, it doesn't have to mean something though it does.
TheProjectMJ 1 year ago
yeah...i know what you mean. i like it when musicians let the song speak in its own way for the individual listener. we can each interpret it in our own way, yet the way it was intended, if we want. does that make sense? haha

Such a simple song, maybe it's a coincidence but the simplicity and the song being about sons and daughters, children simple and such.

are they Irish?
