The late Salty Parker (Former Giants & Astros coach) told me in the early 80s that what made Campaneris a valuable SS perhaps even more than his "good" defense was his hitting/ base-stealing. 70s middle infielders just couldn't hit-in general. Did Oakland have the pitching in those days or what!?
@vakkav Hey remember when Rollie Fingers struck out Johnny Bench...had an 0-2 count on him, Dick Williams called time out, went to the mound, had a conversation with R F and Gene Tennace, then R F threw 3 straight intentional balls, and on the 4th Tennace jumped back in and Fingers put it down the middle striking out Bench. I'll never forget that!!! And in the World Series at that !!!
@stewielips. The A's and Reds were better but in general, you had bad teams like the Rangers, Indians, Angels, and Brewers during that period. These teams would have a run here and there during the 70's but they were bad. The commish was responsible for the roid era, shortening the fences and "ask-don't tell" steroid policy toward players. It took away great athletes but it brought in money of enormous magnitude.
The better team won in '72. The A's proved themselves the team of the decade. Cincy fought hard with it's superior postion players, but Baseball is 66% pitching.
That's little Joe taking out Dick Green at second base. Pete liked doing that too.... Screw those long haired hippy bastards. Not that I harbor any resentment about the '72 series.
The A's of '72-'72 were better than the sum of thier parts; They won in the World Series against better teams in '72 and especially in '74 when they made it look easy!
At this world series Oakland was hit with a tropical storm. A F1 tornado hit and took out some factories. This was the first natural disaster before the earthquake in 1989.
If that slide was done today, there would be a bench clearing brawl. Back then men were men and it was part of the game. Dirty perhaps, but there wasn't much complaining done about shots like this. Anyhow, the A's won the Series.
It wasn't dirty, I'm an A's fan that was just hard nosed baseball. I think the 1972 World Series is one of the most underrated all time great world series to be played.
Morgan, Catfish Hunter, Dick Williams. Two great shortstops Campy Campaneris, Dave Concepcion of their time. Dude the best arguement was with Pete Rose was did he gamble as a player, not as a manager. He should be in the hall of fame as a player. Meanwhile Ty Cobb is in the hall of fame but he was a complete and utter total biggot. (Pardon my spelling)
@SFFOOL76 I'm a huge Reds fan and I would agree. Even though the Reds won more games and made more series appearances, the A's still won three world series in the 70's. They deserve to be remembered more than the roid sucking bash brothers and that crybaby Ricky Henderson. Funny how no one ever talks about their greatness outside the Bay. A's of the 70's were the shit.
@Ariamaluum Yes Hal was tough as nails, but a nice guy. He lived in my neighborhood in Bradenton, FL when he was with the Royals. I would see him at the Shell gas station on the corner of Manatee and 59th Street. He was always friendly, smiling and always said "hello" when I spoke to him.
@Fruth37 I know. Back then that slide was considered normal and routine. You were expected to try to take out the 2nd baseman. Today if you did that you'd probably get kicked out of the game. Also, you'd be branded a "goon"
@Ariamaluum I agree. Hal lived in my neighborhood in Bradenton, FL and I'd see him all the time at the store or at the Shell gas station on the corner of Manatee and 59th St. He was a nice guy, but I wouldn't mess with him. That was in the '70's.
@Fruth37. I wish those writers when he was managing the Royals would have left him alone. I saw it coming but those writers didn't know his history and it showed. I remember sweating when that writer asked that question. Wow.

that was McRae? I disagree, that was dirty. You'd probably a double play now, or even thrown out. He didn't even attempt to slide.

Baseball should go back to the stirrup sock. It's a much better look than today with the pants all the way down or at the knees, un-uniform.
