  • The late Salty Parker (Former Giants & Astros coach) told me in the early 80s that what made Campaneris a valuable SS perhaps even more than his "good" defense was his hitting/ base-stealing. 70s middle infielders just couldn't hit-in general. Did Oakland have the pitching in those days or what!?

  • Great World Series matchup in 1972

  • that was McRae? I disagree, that was dirty. You'd probably a double play now, or even thrown out. He didn't even attempt to slide.

  • Sal Bando nmbr 6 is my grndpa

  • @Mgpizzaman8 And a Great 3rd Baseman he was!! The A's was my team back then, but now I'm a DieHard Braves Fan !!!

  • anyone know where i can find full game videos of the a's 3 world series in the 70's and the '89 one?

  • @vakkav Hey remember when Rollie Fingers struck out Johnny Bench...had an 0-2 count on him, Dick Williams called time out, went to the mound, had a conversation with R F and Gene Tennace, then R F threw 3 straight intentional balls, and on the 4th Tennace jumped back in and Fingers put it down the middle striking out Bench. I'll never forget that!!! And in the World Series at that !!!

  • @vakkav and oh by the way....that was the '72 World Series A's vs Reds

  • that was awesome

  • Baseball was better then. It just was... maybe I'm partial to the pre-roid era

  • @stewielips. The A's and Reds were better but in general, you had bad teams like the Rangers, Indians, Angels, and Brewers during that period. These teams would have a run here and there during the 70's but they were bad. The commish was responsible for the roid era, shortening the fences and "ask-don't tell" steroid policy toward players. It took away great athletes but it brought in money of enormous magnitude.

  • The better team won in '72. The A's proved themselves the team of the decade. Cincy fought hard with it's superior postion players, but Baseball is 66% pitching.

  • @LarryRickenbacker Baseball is 90% half mental.

  • morgan is a god

  • Two great dynasties in the 70's (Mustache Gang, Big Red Machine)

  • Those were 3 Great Athletics Teams. 3 Straight World Series Championships has only been done once since.

  • Big Red Machine Baseball Players with a Football Mentality.

  • Baseball should go back to the stirrup sock. It's a much better look than today with the pants all the way down or at the knees, un-uniform.

  • Ahh... people knew how to brake up double plays once upon a time...

  • That's little Joe taking out Dick Green at second base. Pete liked doing that too.... Screw those long haired hippy bastards. Not that I harbor any resentment about the '72 series.

  • Is there a single vid of Bench throwing someone out at 2nd? There ought to be an entire DVD of them.

  • it is Hal McRae and he did the same thing to Willie Randolph in the 1977 ALCS when McRae was with the Royals

  • Oops! I meant to type "72-74". Finley's A's sure had the pitching!

  • The A's of '72-'72 were better than the sum of thier parts; They won in the World Series against better teams in '72 and especially in '74 when they made it look easy!

  • The 2 best teams of the era ,and two of the best of any eara.

  • that guy got nailed the 2nd time

  • Thank you Captain Obvious.......

  • But the Reds got even in 90 swept the A's and they havent been back since

  • No, they aren't even Baseball mattered more in 1973 than it did in 1990

  • Give more time and that wasn't Dick Green, that's Ted Kubiak at 2nd base.

  • No it's Dick Green. He wore #1 pretty much his entire career.

  • At this world series Oakland was hit with a tropical storm. A F1 tornado hit and took out some factories. This was the first natural disaster before the earthquake in 1989.

  • If that slide was done today, there would be a bench clearing brawl. Back then men were men and it was part of the game. Dirty perhaps, but there wasn't much complaining done about shots like this. Anyhow, the A's won the Series.

  • It wasn't dirty, I'm an A's fan that was just hard nosed baseball. I think the 1972 World Series is one of the most underrated all time great world series to be played.

  • agreed. Look at how many future HOF were on both clubs ie Reggie, Rollie, Bench Sparky and IMO should also be in named Mr. Rose.

  • Morgan, Catfish Hunter, Dick Williams. Two great shortstops Campy Campaneris, Dave Concepcion of their time. Dude the best arguement was with Pete Rose was did he gamble as a player, not as a manager. He should be in the hall of fame as a player. Meanwhile Ty Cobb is in the hall of fame but he was a complete and utter total biggot. (Pardon my spelling)

Im with you all the way.

  • I thought Joe Morgan was in 1972 with the Astros and joined the Reds as 'missing link' for the '75-76 championship teams?

I was born in 1973 so i dont know everything bro lol.

  • It's cool my man, he was traded to the reds before the 72' season for Lee May. Beers at a bar sometime, later.

  • Yes Joe Moragn played for the colts. I think rusty staub played with that team also.I could be wrong but i dont think so.

  • @SFFOOL76 I'm a huge Reds fan and I would agree. Even though the Reds won more games and made more series appearances, the A's still won three world series in the 70's. They deserve to be remembered more than the roid sucking bash brothers and that crybaby Ricky Henderson. Funny how no one ever talks about their greatness outside the Bay. A's of the 70's were the shit.

  • @mkultraviolent Yeah, because being remembered for that "crybaby" who is one of the top 20 (AT LEAST) baseball players of all time is so disgraceful.

  • I saw the highlights of the 72 world series and mention of a rainout, I didn't know it was that intense.

  • am a reds fan i love this world series i was 11 at the time at was a great world series wish i tape of all 7 game at was 1 of the best lenny

  • @Fruth37 . As the reporters found out, you don't mess with Hal McRae. The A's were smart unlike those reporters.

  • @Ariamaluum Yes Hal was tough as nails, but a nice guy. He lived in my neighborhood in Bradenton, FL when he was with the Royals. I would see him at the Shell gas station on the corner of Manatee and 59th Street. He was always friendly, smiling and always said "hello" when I spoke to him.

  • @Fruth37 I know. Back then that slide was considered normal and routine. You were expected to try to take out the 2nd baseman. Today if you did that you'd probably get kicked out of the game. Also, you'd be branded a "goon"

  • @Fruth37. I don't think nobody would mess with Hal McRae then or now. If they did, consequences would netail.

  • @Ariamaluum I agree. Hal lived in my neighborhood in Bradenton, FL and I'd see him all the time at the store or at the Shell gas station on the corner of Manatee and 59th St. He was a nice guy, but I wouldn't mess with him. That was in the '70's.

  • @Fruth37. I wish those writers when he was managing the Royals would have left him alone. I saw it coming but those writers didn't know his history and it showed. I remember sweating when that writer asked that question. Wow.

  • That is not Joe Morgan - It's Hal McRae

  • It's Hal Linden!

  • Go Joe MORGAN!!!

  • meet Mr. Dick(in the dirt)Green!

  • That's the dirtiest "slide" I've ever seen- should have been suspended for the series!

  • can you really do this with out getting ejected?

  • Reggie did not play in this series due to an injury suffered in the playoffs against Detroit!

  • I have one question...WHY ONLY 10 SECONDS?

  • how about posting the video that this comes from. I would love to watch some footage from this World Series.

  • how about posting the video that this comes from. I would love to watch some footage from this World Series.

  • I think that was Hal McCrae instead of Joe Morgan. I remember seeing that play and I thought the announcers saying it was McCrae.

  • nope..its morgan,.....check the uniform number...hal wore #11...morgan wore #8

    thats joe

  • Man now that is some old school baseball. Joe Morgan would be beat down if he did something like that today!

  • the way the game SHBOULD be played

  • Shortstops are now 6'5 like A-Rod. Please if that been Cal Ripken at short, Joe or Hal would have had a concussion and be taken off by the stretcher.
