My daughters 8/9th grade hybrid math class in NYC uses the Singapore and the Saxon Math system. The Singapore system uses visual aides, it helps a lot with word problems which many students struggle with. Then when the switch to Saxon Math happens it is not such a shock because they can visualize the word problem first. I feel Singapore math helped tremendously to develop her abstract thinking. I like that both systems are used because all districts do not use the Singapore system.
They just started using this where I'm from and all it's doing with the kids is confusing them. I was taught basic math in school and I undersand it far better than this stuff. My parents and I can't help my younger brother's and sister's because even we don't understand it. My aunt graduated with a teaching degree and she can't help either. What the crap are we suppose to do when their grades drop?
This is complete bullshite, in PSLE , they cut down algebra to the basics and force down this stupid heuristics. So what can be solved by Algebra is not taught and kids are forced to use convoluted methods to solved what essentially could be solved by algebra. in their eureka moment, they decided to push this thru with disastrous effects.
Theintellectually dishonest math teachers community then supports this and spawns a huge industry from tuition to books and workshops. DEGENERATE.
@camperinCod43 Actually model drawing helped me visualise the no.s especially in word problems in primary school. Especially PSLE :) So... when algebra came around I was able to take it on much easier.
Wow... I didn't know Singapore method of teaching Mathematics is so well recognised in the US. I'm proud of Singapore but I hope MOE can reduce the workload of our teachers.
in singapore we do start learning math at an advance level from a young age but i think the success in doing well in math is by practicing ALOT. in singapore, a 15 yr old student does over 70 math sums a week and have hours of tuition (im one of them), i think this is the reason for the success of singapore math...
I use Singapore Math with my kids, and they are years ahead of their peers and actually have critical thinking skills. This is the best Math program out there, but since Singapore consistently and continually wins international Math competitions I shouldn't have to say too much - the proof is in the pudding. ;)
im not sure i would be good at singapore math, im pretty good at saxon math and my drawing is quite a bit less than optomal, so im glad i was taught the other way
I'm frm student frm singapore and trust me, it seems fun at the beginning but once you are forced to do it for every question, you will start hoping it doesn't exist. And btw, that diagram is called models in singapore
My children's school has used Singapore Math for several years. Every one of my children loves math and feels confident in problem solving. Check it out.
Wow...algebra by 3rd grade and the kids actually seem to enjoy what they are doing. Why are schools still saying it's not worth the switch to this BETTER math system?
There are a lot of youtube videos about Singapore Math showing up lately. Our country needs to take best practices from around the world to improve the education of our children. Singapore Math looks to be one of those best practices.
Singapore Math is finally catching on in the US. If we want our country's children to be able to compete for jobs globally, they MUST be better prepared in math. I encourage everyone to do some research on Singapore Math and, if it looks good, spread the word.
The newscasters involved in this video, unfortunately, admit that they were not good at math, and imply that math is not fun. It's time for our country to wake up and realize that science and math are crucial subjects and we need to teach our students in a way that prepares them for future employment. Joking about math being boring or too hard is no longer funny, as we fall further and further behind other countries in these important fields.
The jokes have a truth behind them, which is that our current methods of teaching DO NOT WORK. The jokes are not the thing to criticize, that's like telling someone not to have a stuffy nose if they're sick. You have to cure the sickness!

Studies show that the enthusiasm of the teacher dictates the success of his/her instruction. This teacher certainly demonstrates a lot of enthusiasm.
