The Soviet Union collapsed because it didn't have free and open elections, freedom of speech, assembly and press, a real Constitution, or a functioning parliament.
I was in Leningrad and Moscow iin 1987...I saw how bad things were...but I thought it would somehow last another 50 years...instead of just another 4 years.
Russian people were very miserable under communism...no food in the stores...no clothes, no cars, no apartments, it was terrible...I felt bad for them while there.
Very miserable? The USSR was not Zimbabwe. I know the soviet economy was very inefficient, but the people did not starve to death. Sure they had to wait in lines for basic things, but that is because the soviet bureaucracy did not cared about consumer products. The bureaucracy failed to produce consumer products because the workers are not allowed to participate. The USSR was not communist, it was Stalinist, a bureaucracy that ruled over the people in the name of Marx and Lenin.
The collapse of USSR is one of the best things happened, finally freedom for many of those countries which were occupied of Russia. Tho still many people in Russia still living in the old days which is so sad and brainwashing !
