m I thought tha story was kind of different... this is what was taught to me in social studies class: When first Cristopher Columbus arrived America(THE CONTINENT) it wasn't recognized that he had dizcovered a newcontinent, but it was thouhghth that he only discovered a shorter way to get to the Indies. So this was thought for a long period of time. Until, in later voyages Amerigo Vespuci he measured the land and discovered that the measurements werent the same of the ones of the Indies. ;););)

America is 'not' a continent.
"The Americas" are simply the lands in the western hemisphere of the world.
It feels silly to mention this, but stating the obvious seems almost necessary - North and South America are two separate continents.
Referring to the United States of America as America is simply practical.

America was named after Johnny America. Just for laughs he told someone his name was Amerigo Vespucci, which is Italian for America Little Motorcycle. It got listed in a Who's Who of Global Explorers and never corrected. Christopher Columbus would later write the screenplay for Gremlins as an allegory of his first encounter with the New World.

Columbus was named after a country...,and a river: Columbia (also District of Columbia= Washington D.C.

Uhm, Colombus wasn't the first to discover America. It was a viking called Leif Erikson who went there first and he named it Wine land. Just a quick side note ;)
