I have been a straighter than a board inside a church fan of Erasure since about 1985. Very powerful and very inspirational song. Vince Clarke and Andy Bell are just totally awesome and extremely talented artists and musicians. It was an honor to see these men preform live in 1988 and in the early 90's. Its good to see they are still together and making new music. MUCH MUCH MUCH RESPECT for this group
Inspirational, powerful and moving..said from a straight Erasure fan for the past 21 years. Andy and Vince know how to it's done . Got to see them live somehow soon.. Erasure for all....I'm mean ALL! Great job. Thanks for posting.
I absolutely L O V E this song! It almost mad me cry the first time I heard it! What a powerful song and line: Are you still proud of your little boy? =*)
This was my coming out tune back 21 years ago whenI was outed by someone I thought was my friend to my mother. Needless to say that didnt go well in the deep dark south. Well anyways this guy that I was dating was an Erasure fan, And played this for me. WOW It really had meaning for me.
re-release this song . we think we are getting it tough in 2010. just think what andy bell and other gay people had to hideaway then . andy bell i salute you
@allisonfair think off what not just about gender job life what ya wanna be this song as been in my head since i was 20 and i am straight but dont na me dad fits all things in this klittle life
Seriuosly... I grew up in a VERY small town in idaho in the 90'S. I think this song saved my life (for real). I contemplated suicide, and then , this group showed me I wasn't alone. Been a HUGE fan every since.
If you change the first sentence to :"One day the boy decided to let his parents know that he was gay", the rest of the song makes perfect sense. It does anyway, I know.
Did he mean for the falsetto "Learn to be brave" to sound just like "Learn to be gay"?
Sorry, I just like teasing Andy Bell sometimes. I do love Erasure, though.
I see this song differently i as a kid in the 80's my step father was a drunk and abused my mother a lot and i used to play this song often as a kind of private message to her to say i'm going away to the army and wanted to make her proud of me and love would mend her broken wing i would protect her and my mother did cry when i told her i wanted to join the army. things are a bit better these days 18 years on.
no matter what your situation, i am glad you found strenght in this song, we will all interpret it the way we need it. i hope you are in a better situation now and also your mom.
Its a great shame we live in such a sad world when we have a group as good as erasure. They have been, still are and will be my all time favourite group, long live there music. And his sexuality has no reflection to me and why should it,after all were all human.
20 years ago this song saved my life no, I do not want to be dramatic or raise pity. I was 17 years old in Puerto Rico and I thought that I had great family and friends but I felt alone and scared Erasure told me You are not alone, learn to be brave..... now my family embrace me but 20 years ago they were as afraid as me. I understood that we don't have to dance to the rhythm...
I'm 39 now and still love Erasure. Just hope they never stop recording and making new music. Some of the backing singers have been a bit ropey though - sorry.
@martin748916 I also like what they do. Or what they did? I've personally not heard anything about them for at least 15 years. Someone please help me to remember if they've made any new songs since then.
It only took one listen to understand what it's about! One of their best songs, and no, doubt, their best lyrics! I myself am straight as an arrow, but I can understand how it feels to be "rejected by the people that you care for".. Once again... Great song.. Great lyrics!
I like how they wrote this so that it could apply to anyone. I'm a strait man, and this song reminds me so much of problems I've had in my own family. Empathy is a blessing for those of us that have it! God I love erasure :)
very moving and emotional , very powerful . must be so hard for anyone to come to turms with their sexuality never mind the rejection from those who are suposed to love you . i love erasure and im straight .
Is that true about the rose ring? Are Andy and his parents still estranged? How is his health by the way, is he struggling with his HIV? Didn't he knowingly become infected from his long term partner a few years back?
i always thought it was his mother he was telling. i know he bought her a purple diamond rose ring and she threw it in the bin caus she couldn't accept his sexuality.
Was on there early album from 1985 and is a great song and one that will last the test of time just a shame they have not released anything great for the past 10 years
What a refreshing message to read and also a reassuring message that "straight" mentally mature people appreciate good music and lyrics for what they are and not the sexual nature of the artist. This is particularly a heartfelt sad song regarding sexuality and to read a promising message such as yours including your children is a triumph and a slap in the face for those that unfortunately still harbour homophobic ideas. You evidently have a strong, wonderful mature family.
remember this from 1987.....great track to relate too when your coming out.......The Circus & Wonderland albums were the best that Erasure made...... ;)
I have never heard this version either and yes it is amazing! I loved Erasure growing up as there was a song I could relate to for every stage of my coming out and then some! I was fortunate enough to meet Andy Bell nine years ago in LA at a bar called Felt. He was at the bar and could have been anyone!
I wrote to Andy Bell when I was 15..Mmmm 20 YEARS AGO! I asked if we could meet for a coffee..He never replied..I'm not bitter at all. Mute records I believe at the time. He is a truely talented STAR! I hope he is well.
I love this song but it upsets me so much as it takes me back to a bad time in my life. Erasure were in my opinion the best band to come out of the 80's, kings of techno, or queens as the case may be :)
having been gay since i was 15 and i am now 40..do not be afraid, no..its not a choice, i am a woman..and got treated much like the boy in the song did
