  • most likely the hippo mistakes the impala for a young hippo, and tries to save it

hippos are retarded after all ....

  • i am shocked!!!

  • This example of compassion in the animal kingdom is touching. It also destroys the theistic theory that God is the source of compassion in humans (unless theists are going to now claim that hippos, monkeys dolphins, and all other animals that demonstrate compassion now have souls as humans do.)

  • I saw this on TV as a teenager, the full clip! Uncut and much more detailed. It reminds me once again, why we should treat animals just as kindly and fairly as we treat people. Still makes me cry.

  • @bta1352 but we treat people like shit... how are we expected to treat animals better?

  • @GrimmjowProduction You are right, there is nothing quite as filthy and pathetic as human being.

  • other video has a hippo trying to eat zebra carcass

  • I think it was making sure it was dead it doesnt like anything thats not a hippo

  • Looks Like Hippos Steal Meat fro other animals, to eat it them selfes, search for Hippo vs Lions. Hippo defeats lions.

and Hippo vs Large Male Crocodile

    and watch.

  • How do they know that it was, specifically, trying to revive it?

  • Who the hell can dislike a notoriously dangerous animal trying to save another species' life?! That was touching stuff.

  • Doch Impara ist schon tot...

  • でも結局死んでワニの餌?

  • Well this isn't the Disney movie I'm looking for...

  • the hippo is more human than us

  • AAAAAWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

  • awwh.. amazing because these animals are so aggressive

  • And trust me, if you're going to do anything, don't get near a hippo's territory.

  • That impala has a powerful ally on its side. Now that the hippo's decided it's part of its territory, it's gonna do everything it can to defend it.

  • Croc: "Thank you hippo for that lovely performance. now move, bitch. "

  • Impala had a heart attack when hippo tried to revive her!

  • this is remarkable, but the croc isn't evil. They need to eat too. Those who dislike reptiles (snakes) feeding on other animals should look in the mirror and consider how many species WE kill for sustenance. You can find consolation in the fact that this croc wont need to eat for weeks after a meal like that.

  • Okay, that's about the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

  • animals are more caring than a lot of humans.

  • O well, he tried

  • The croc is like I'll just take this back... Lol

  • This hippo is badass

  • Never knew other mammals knew kiss of life other than us and our cousin primates.

  • omg. no words

  • the hippos breath stinked ...

    so the deer died.

  • If hippos didn't kill more humans in africa than any other animal I'd be impressed :o

  • @Newbeboy humans are worse than the crocs.

  • @jdfrsbrg4 - wow dude you're so cool and edgy.

  • hippos are fantastic aniamls, lol at the end the croc takes the impala and all the voltures are like "what the hell man we were just eating that!"

  • OMG that is awsome...i nearly cried watching that, absolutely amazing.

  • @nahed651010 I cried because that meanie hippo tried to make that poor croc go hungry. Meanie starving an animal like that. Good thing the croc ended up getting his meal anyway. :)

  • I am somewhat skeptical that this is truly what it appears to be. Hippos are known to occasionally feed on meat and that may have been the reasoning behind her actions. On the other hand I believe animals are more capable of "human" traits such as altruism then we recognize. On another note I feel like reptiles are "dragons" within the collective consciousness of mammals. I was struck by the romantic notion that this was a display of warm-blooded kinship against a primeval foe.

  • @MrAnubis89 I must say while i do not agree with you completely reptiles and insects are hated by almost all mammal for they have claimed more of us collectively then almost anything else.... who knows you might be right :P

  • the guy who recorded this should have won a pulitzer

  • Hippos are awesome animals

  • hippo always fuck crocodile everywhere

  • well, at least the impala died quickly. if the hippo saved it and guarded it, it could've bled out for hours. amazing video though.

  • My mouth fuckin drop when i saw this, I never thought that animals will have free will like humans.

  • @ednakazuya12

    1-. Hi :)!

Yes, they have :). Im talkin from my own experience :). There're a lot of misinformations+disinformations about animals :(. So we all use 2 think that they've got ONLY an instinct, but when some1 amon us work next 2 them or have pets or search 4 information, then the truth about animals reveals: they got feelins, own will... 4 example cats only do what they want & see us like equals, they live with us but come 2 behave as follows: "U human & I are equals, I like 2 b

  • @ednakazuya12 2-. ...with U as U like 2 b with me ;)".

Have stuff about animal will if U want :).

    B blessed ;)!

  • @ednakazuya12 The hippo saves it to eat it itself, unfortunety animals are not like that saving others, the bit it opens its mouth and the injured animals head is released is reverse footage, it snapped its neck

  • The hippo gave the impala mouth to mouth!!!

  • The hippo gave the impala mouth to mouth!!!

  • Hippo power! I love her! She's so sweeeet! I'm so sorry hippo for your friend dying and to the poor impala. I think I'm going to cry. WAAAAHHH!

  • awwww oh mi gosh thats adorable

  • even though it did'nt live.... u gotta say thats pretty fckn wild. lol amazing

  • The hippo only did that cause he was on probation and he if he ate the gazelle he would have gone back to D-BLOCK

  • i dont think it was trying to save it, i think that it got territorial and in fact killed the impala. As much as i would like to think that it did try and save it the fact that it took the animals head into it's mouth twice and once after it was awake suggests that actually the hippo killed it, just not as graphic as crocs kill thier prey.

  • @buffytariq hmmm although i do believe that it was trying to save it, im pretty sure that if he really wanted to kill it first it would have been really brutal and over in a few seconds. however another idea that i got from you is that... it was trying to save it but then seeing that he sucks at giving cpr. he then decided to end the impala's misery by killing it. just a theory. i still believe that he wanted to save it and just failed.

  • I want to make love to that hippo

  • the hippo was like oops I thought you where someone else

  • tis the wondrous beauty if nature. <3

  • something unnatural. could be included as a buddha story. amazing ! thanks

    YTHelpDesk

  • go hippo

  • yes the head is gone, the hippo saved the baby then it realised the baby cannot be saved and the croc will come back. So he snapped off his head in a painless killing. THE END FUCKING AWESOME HIPPO.

    BTW U R ALL FAG.

    cept the guy below me.

  • Wow. I used to respect National Geographic....They really expect us to believe that a hippo understands the mechanics of resuscitation? Oh wait, judging from a lot of comments on here, most of you do believe it. Idiots.

  • big hippos remind me of shaq

  • Wow a golden hearth hippo !!

  • One of the best Vids I've seen in here , 5 stars for the Hippo !

  • That's amazing but just goes to show animals aren't stupid and have compassion for each other no matter the specie.

  • That hippo was using mouth to head resuscitation.

  • ohhhhhh they say animals dont have feelings super hippo!

  • @spongetmmovies Who said that? They scream every time I cut them.

  • that was just like egyption god........ the egyptions belived that on of there gods have hippo, half human was the gaurdians of babies and pregnant woman........i guess they also looked after baby animals

  • thats awesome to see compassion in nature

  • poor little impala... he tried tho

  • Hippo of Justice

"Hey, croc! Take on someone your own size!"

  • Hippos can weight nearly three tons and move quite fast. Let's not forget the thick skin and armor.

Imagine a Hummer with teeth and a brain.

  • hell yeah :)

    Super Hippo!

  • lol at 50 seconds just lol

  • LEEEEERRROOYYYYYYY JENNNNKANSS!

  • so appropriate !!!!

  • Thats so amazing, what a lovely hippo, I didn't think they had compassion like that. So sweet xx

  • lol the croc at 1:08 was like

    "You douchebag hippo"

  • at least it didnt die alone.. =/

  • damn right it was super hippo lol

  • That was Super Hippo!

  • More like the hippo was testing things using it's mouth, for whatever reason. Certainly the impala was already fatally wounded by the crocodile. The impala was flipped over the other way from where it was last being filmed with the hippo mouthing it when the crocodile went back for it. Editing can change things a great deal. Please watch again and reconsider what we are been shown. A hippo has no concept of saving other animals. Only if I saw the complete video would I reconsider my opinion.

  • I saw this on television, and to me i did had emphasy on saving the impala.

Btw that not the only cases of emphasy you see between aniamal races, there many other examples that

  • there are a killerwhale example where he

saves a young seal beach safely back to shore.

    have seen more like that.

  • i was sawing that two! there was a croc and it did the hunt of impalas. it saddening me. when watched it saw a hippo and saving the baby. the croc skared ran. it had heroic to it. i liked a lot.

  • What, were you like.. a hippo in a past life or something?

  • Yes.

  • I know this is not addressing the concerns of your comment, but it made me sad to think that so many people are so unwilling to share their definition of sentience with other animals. How can anyone expect to find intelligent life on other planets if we aren't even willing to see it on our own? There's no reason why a hippo, who has a lot of time on its hands, shouldn't want to offer help, or feel sympathy. Whether it actually knows about CPR is debatable.

  • " A hippo has no concept of saving other animals."

How do you know? Are you an expert on hippos? I've seen a female lion once taking care of like a deer or something. Even if in this case the hippo actually wants to eat the impala, doesn't mean that a hippo could never somehow save another animal. I mean, if a dog can save a human, why can't a hippo save an impala?

  • Yeah, the female lion was in a sanctuary, I remember that. I believe they named it Kanun Yuk, African for blessed one.

  • Stupid hippo, you are not a doctor!

  • Hey, croc's have to eat, too!

  • Survival of the friendliest.

  • whats the sound when the hippo takes the impala´s head into hes mouth?

  • because if we ran into rivers after crocodiles

    we'd get eaten

just kidding- I know what you mean

  • if we ran after a crocodile like that would it run away? what if we made a lot of noise and stomped like hippo

  • our water displacement would be sadly lacking

the croc would know it and see us and eat us

    hippos are big

a hippo is like two water buffalo sewn together

how ever if we got a few zebra t o wear a hippo suit and stomp and make noise

    that might work

  • aww!

  • watch the impala carefully at like 2:00 you see its head when the croc lifts it up.

    Hippo haters

  • I hate crocs!

  • so beautiful !

  • I remember this video, it is flippin old. It was filmed by the South African Jamie Uys. The original is much longer and even more amazing. Brilliant stuff. Amazing.

  • wow i am speechless that hippo is 1 true hero

  • how cute!

  • also when the hippo charges the croc it isnt in the same frame and when the birds are eating the impala it seems to have a head but when the croc drags it away it dosnt seem to, all highly dubious. All in all a highly edited video of real events but from what i can see im guessing the hippo is the one that decapited the impala :)

  • "Amazing video of a hippo who spots a young impala being eaten by a croc., and then proceeds to scare the croc. away, in attempts to revive the impala."

from 1:10 onwards the hippo puts its mouth around the impalas head then the film is rewound back and forth a few times. I mean since when do hippos give mouth to mouth to other animals?...and the last shot the impalas being dragged away but i dont see a head there do you?

  • from that angle it's hard to tell if the impala has a head but u definitely have a point.

  • OMG cute in its own way.

  • it looked like the hippo wanted to bite the head off. are you guys sure it was "sympathetic"? just asking, the picture isnt that clear.

  • wow, that's amazing!! go hippo!

  • wow, that's amazing! I've never seen that before in nature.

  • omg. The story bout big heart hippo. it looked that this hippo has feelings, or i missunderstand sth right. But anyw this hippo rox!

  • Hippo save the souls!!1111oneoneone

  • I don't think the baby could survive that internal organ crunching from the croc.

I hope that it did recover before the croc attacked again.

  • Hippo!

  • sorry guys.. it seems that the hippo`s breath that knocked the impala out ... not kidding thats a scientific fact

  • Hippo's FTW!!!

  • look at the birds when they pick it up the head is gone u see ?

  • look at the croc when it grabs the body, the head is still on its place.

  • that is true!!! its weird, maybe hippo got his head off?!?! or the croc... cuz they dont show the whole image they show us cuts only!

  • he was hungry he ate its head...

  • man...who knew hippos could move that fast...

  • hippos r awesomeee!! yay hippos!!!

  • even the animal help each others...Not racist like Human...you HUMAN SHOULD FEEl ASHAMED...

  • Totally agreed and well said.

  • you humans? what are you, an alien?

  • don;t you get that he is trying to revive him with his breath and not to eat it...

  • "You wouldnt say so in NYC or Chicago" buuhuu. Show your black ass in Europe and we would eat you alive. If you would act like u do in Europe like u do in America, then you are screwed.

  • lol revive it?

It wanted to eat it, but he thought: ''damm this is gross''

  • That clip is so cut up, the hippo and the croc aren't even in the frame at the same time. I think the hippo was ust running over to see what was killed and if he wanted it. He doesn't like impala. Must be a Ford man.

  • i feel sad

  • wtf

  • Good for the hippo. The impala had been injured too badly by the croc. Hopefully the hippo killed the croc eventually.

  • because they can say whatever they want on here cause if it was in someones face they would smash their fuckin skull in

  • come on...are you serious? This was real, and you'd better believe it.

  • i know this is real, im just saying the commentor in the show was dramatizing what was happening

  • are you retarded ? then wouldnt you see the hippo kill it , not the croc ?

  • your reading comprehension sucks ...

  • youre just dumb man hahah

  • You're smart.

  • go away

  • AWESOME!!! O.O

  • this video always makes me teary.

  • thats a bad ass hippo!

  • no water

  • dude didn't know a hippo could run that that...! love this vid

  • This Hippo rocks

  • sympathetic hippo! he tries to eat the skinny animal look at 30 seconds. He rips a chunk out of the animals egi think

  • ouch my fcking ears!

  • "Even cows will eat meat if they're hungry enough."

People will eat other people if they're hungry enough.

"You might call it a form of compassion, but its more of a side effect of survival."

I don't even know how the hell that is supposed to come across as an intelligent statement. There's always some pompous person who has to refute any sign that nonhuman animals might have feelings...

  • *googles myotony*

  • its called myotony. It's when one species recognizes infantile traits in another species and reacts with parental behavior. It's why humans have pets, and why cuckoos and cowbirds can get other birds to raise their eggs. You might call it a form of compassion, but its more of a side effect of survival.

  • It's definitely not myotony, my friend. It's fairly simple to break down, even without any particular medical training; myotony is "muscular tension" (myo[s] = muscle, [Greek]). Like in the case of "myocardial", where it means cardiac muscle. It's called something else, although I can't tell you what that may be. However, it isn't myotony (or at least, it isn't any definition I am aware of, that isn't of muscular inference). ;-)

  • thanks, you're right. whatever it is, there should be a word for it. How about ENSCRUNDULATION? No pesky Greek/Germanic roots there to make me look stupid!

  • Hmmmm.... I couldn't break that one down, and my Google search didn't turn up anything for that word. I think you're on to something, here. Maybe you should copyright it??? Could make you rich, on the basis of royalties. I can just see it on Discovery Channel, "And now, our feature presentation: "Pious Predators: The ESCRUNDULATING animals of the Serengeti" ;-)

  • ...and the nobel peace prize go to this hippo.

  • lolol u crazy niggerkilledmydog lol nice video theres compassion in wild nature

  • The Crocodile.. Nature's Apathetic Mafia Members.

  • wow...

  • croc: "niggas gotta eat"

  • atleast the hippo tried, unlike the lazy camera crew who sat there and filmed it (only joking)

  • ='( why didn't the little impala survive... =(

  • Because it just got mauled by a crocodile.

  • when the hippo pit the head in its mouth i was just like uh-oh,,,,,,,

  • hippo cpr

  • haha..nice vid...bt the ending was rather sad though..the hippo should have juz eaten the damn impala..rather than donating it to the croc..poor hppo

  • Hippo's are vegetarians.

  • not true... they are known to eat meat from time to time.

  • Even cows will eat meat if they're hungry enough.

  • in youtube you can see hippo eating buffalo.

  • Hippos are known to eat meat mind you.
