Naw dude lol, turbo and the turbo manifold get red hot if pushed like this, its normal. When I run, I usually pop my hood, my friends huddle around and light cigs off of the manifold/turbo. Completely normal thing.
i replaced my stock manifold with a custom one i made in my garage but i welded cooling lines to prevent this and it gained me an extra 25 or 30 horses i think.
yea... they must put the big fan in front of it.. to keep the engine run in good condition... that's the best way to tune the engine... i do that all the time... maybe the garage don't have the big fan... hehehe... no place to put the big fan...
EASY I USED 2 motor cycle rads and a small condensor from a mitsubishi and welded lines all over the exaust system the 2 rads and small fans on them and the air conditioning system is also mixed in with that and it keeps it nice and cool keeps the engine temp down too. rednecks can do anything
the mani glowing means the timing is to retarded. when the exhaust valve is opening, the air/fuel charge is still combusting. pull a lil boost and add timing.
Not true. The walls on a tubular manifold are not thick by any means, and if you've ever owned one you know even a quick pull on the street at night after you pull over it's glowing. When metal gets hot it glows, it's not TOO hot, that's just what happens. Exhaust temperatures before the gas hits the turbine wheel are over 1400 degrees at cruise. It has nothing to do with improper timing.
This may be different, but rotary engines always run a little rich, that could cause it on a piston engine as well. But the tubular manifold also does it like you said.
That guy should really get a heat shield for the manifold and the turbo, it will increase spool. (more heat = more velosity. Hate to be that radiator.
yup. The same amount of exhaust gas will have a higher volume at a higher temp. This means more pressure. More pressure means a faster spinning turbine.
I can't believe there's a whole debate going on about why the manifold is red hot. It's hot because there several thousand explosions going on right next to it and there quite warm.
I had a standard Metro turbo and the manifold would glow after some hard use. My 323 Turbo manifold would also glow after some good use. Both of these had cast manifolds as well. My 180SX proper glows now after some use, this one has a s/s manifold and heats up a lot quicker.
agreed. i can get my manafold to glow if i boost my 180sx on the highway... its common to heat up a exhaust manafold on a turbo car. its accualy easyer to get a aftermarket headers on a chevy big block to glow. takes like 20 secconds of hard driving.
Dude, you have a serious backpressure problem. You prob will melt the valves after a few runs. You should increase the exhaust diameter by at least 50%
I agree. I threw a turbo on my B20 crvtec and with the old pipes same thing happened further down. Had to go to a 2.5" all the way (still want some backpressure)
DSM and EVO motors are never supposed to get egt's that high.. what are you talking about, idk about your chevy.. but I have a DSM and if my manifold was red I'd be sh**ting a brick..
Diamond-Star Motors (commonly abbreviated to DSM) was an automobile-manufacturing joint venture between the Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. Took that from Wikipedia. Chrysler had nothing to do with any of the EVOs.
i think the bucking is the AWD system shuttling power between the front and rear of the car. I've heard that Subarus do something similar on the dyno.
that was probably a 5 or 6th gear pull. thats the reason that manifold got so damn hot because the EGT's where rising from the motor being boost for so long.
Now quick!!! lick it!!!

i would have said that the mixture is too weak. not enough fuel, or an air leak on the inlet side

So you welded cooling lines into a exh manifold? How did you not boil the coolant on contact?

kithylin 4 years ago
If I didn't know any better, i would say he's got too much backpressure in the manifold before the turbo. Nowhere for the heat to go.

I agree. I threw a turbo on my B20 crvtec and with the old pipes same thing happened further down. Had to go to a 2.5" all the way (still want some backpressure)
ProductionDesignrMAX 4 years ago
Turbo engines do not need backpressure in the exhaust. The turbo provides far more than the engine needs.
