Well played overall. The opening is too forte for a nocturne, esp the accented base notes. But, she is performing in a hall, after all. Gabriela rushes the last section as many, if not most pianists do. A. Rubinstein is the only pianist I know who plays it perfectly. Go have a listen.
I just love how so many random noname youtube posters, that will never mean anything in the musical world, know how Chopin meant his nocturne. Apparently Montero has it all wrong. period.
For those estrict critics of her piano performances, I would like to hear your performances in youtube or elsewhere can you post it? oh, don't you have any? sorry...
This is not Chopin's Nocturne. It is obvious that Ms. Montero is very talented but she does not want to be a servant to the music. She wants to be above the music. For that, I don't like this performance. I think she would be better off to be a Jazz pianist. A lady Keith Jarrett perhaps.
I do not care what people say about "ZAL" element, "Sotto Voce" and the pianissimo way of playing it.
I was taking a look at some performances of this nocturne here at youtube and, for me, you have the best interpretation on the 3rd (and last) part.
So much pain from 5:20 and on...deep despair at 6:25 and death at 6:35..at this point the left hand reminded me of the Sonata 2, which I thing this Nocturne is part of.
This pianist was bronze medalist at the Chopin competition, a grueling test of depth, knowledge and endurance. At this level, the fascination is not why she is NOT Barenboim, of Rubinstein, any more that they are her. The fascination, rather, is in why she is Gabriela Montero. What is Gabriela Montero saying to us about this music? Those who want a reproduction of history ought simply to replay history. But a real artist has the courage and conviction to reveal him or herself. Bravo Gabriela!!
Generally, I think it is good. But if I have to be picky (she IS an international pianist), I find there is a lack of basic color and dynamics. I really admire her passion and her musical way of playing, but like in the middle section, I wish she would shape the octaves. However, her improvisations are delightful!
@ceciamable I don´t understand how a great pianist as Gabriela, can play this beauty Nocturne without any kind of ideas (old or new).Does she listen Brailowsky,Rubinstein,Barenboim,Wild or now,Valentina Lisitsa ?The last part is "martellato" ?.Take care Mrs. Montero.
One of my favorite pianists. I do not think anything will ever top Moravec's interpretation of this particular nocturne, for me. It just didn't chill me to the bone like his version does. That said, the doppio was stunningly beautiful, it made me cry.
i love her to death too. i didn't think the piano sounded harsh at all. it's a matter of taste i guess. some would like it a bit softer at the climax, i loved it the way she did it.
however, there isn't such a thing in piano called "perfect performence". some like red others prefer blue :) see what i mean?
Passionate, emotional, deep, full of reverse sentiments, there is something unspeakable pain in it. One of the best Chopin pieces and a wonderful performance. Bravo.
She starts a little bit slowly and she'doens't some "rubato" but her sound and tecnique are amazing.I especially prefer her performance from 4:00 to the end.

@Mike1614b Don't forget Ashkenazy's rendition, which IMHO is perfection.
Montero is certainly a very fine artist -- her improvisation of the rach 3 played in the mode of Bach (search Youtube) is brilliant.

The best version of this nocturne is Argerich's. Quite old, but superb.

The opening section dies with her lack of ability to make the line coherent at the slow tempo.

@gwatts12 i agree. The piano is very bright and a bit harsh for this song. It would sound great for a rachmaninoff or something.
