  • hey! johanna sounds good wen she doesn't over do it

  • That dissonance with the notes a half-step apart at the end is incredible and the effect it produces is chilling. This is a beautiful and amazingly well-done scene.

  • the beggar woman is my favorite character angela lansbury did well to

  • the mans razor is like freakin butcher knife

  • I like when he doesn't kill the guy because his wife is their. He's like damn!

  • @GremlinBaron2 I think it was supposed to be that guys daughter, but yeah. It's quite a funny part.

  • i must get this on dvd

  • This is freaking awesome......

  • Does anyone know where I can get sheet music for this particular version?

  • I saw the original Broadway show with Lansbury and Len Cariou as well as the Bob Gunton version in the late 1980's. I haven't seen the movie and am not that anxious to because no one can do better than George Hearn. This is the one that has stayed with me and not only because it was the one they filmed. Hearn's voice is so magnificent I can still hear it after he is done with the song. Only Hearn can make you swoon as he sings while cutting peoples' throats, LOL!

  • You don't have a clue, do you? Rickman would have made a better Todd than Depp. But then I guess H.L. Mencken was right.

  • @DanishNerdess I like your taste in entertainment. This is one of my favorite shows. The music is brilliant. Check out Neil Patrick Harris doing this. It's on youtube.

  • "Wake up, Joanna. Another bright red day. We learn, Joanna, to say goodbye."

    So sad. Beautiful song.

  • 4:52 it always makes me laugh! <3 He's like "Crap, now i have to actually shave him -_-"

  • Can you imagine the show like this?

"Say, don't I know you sir?"

    "....Lucy?"

  • @DanishNerdess EXACTLY!!!!!!!!

  • extraordinary, wish I could be redone with this kind of singing talent again.

  • Privledged to see this original cast on Broadway in the mid-70s. Incredibly complex piece and so well done!

  • One of the best sequences in musical theater ever.

  • My favorite song of the entire play ^^

  • @ElectroMagneticWeak I love this one, Not While I'm Around, Epiphany, and A Little Priest.

  • @TrueDeath46 Search for Sweeney Todd Neil Patrick Harris. Great anniversary show. He does a fantastic job too.

  • @suckittomcat Why of course he does a fantastic job, it's Neil Patrick Harris~<3

  • I saw the movie first and that how I was introduced to Sweeney Todd. Then a friend was kind enough to direct me to this stage performance and I have to say, in my honest opinion, while I did enjoy the movie, there's really no comparison. I think George Hearn is better than Johnny. I love Johnny, he's one of my all time favorite actors but George Hearn has a passion to his Sweeney I felt Johnny's was missing and listening to the two back to back, it really shows.

  • @Torijenova I'm so glad you found the original version! Nobody can do it like Hearn. Just watch him do "My Friends". Fantastic! "you shall drip rubies, you'll soon drip precious rubies" OMG it gives me chills.

  • @Zeppolino100 yea i also really like the complexity of kiss me w/ ladies and their sensitivities :)

  • Why so much hate on Depp ? He did a good job too. I love George Hearn as Sweeney He has an amazing voice. At the same time i also love Johnny. He has a beautiful and he did a very good job. Plus he makes a real sexy sweeney ;) :P

  • @musiclovergurl24 nothing can compare to the complexity of the actual performance of this, though. I've done this show, and it's hard. if you mess up you can't just cut the scene and re-film it. Depp isn't half as talented as George, and he'll never be the true Sweeney Todd.

  • @AllowMeToExaggerate Johnny Depp is a very talented actor, he is not a singer and yet he managed to sing the songs and be convincing as Sweeney. Not George nor Johnny will ever be the true Sweeney Todd because he was not a real man and in any case, who would like to be just like a killer? They are both good, both of them play the part differently, both act according to the medium and they are both a delight to watch.

  • @AllowMeToExaggerate I agree that Depp can't compare to George Hearn. Check out Neil Patrick Harris doing this on youtube.

  • @suckittomcat oh my god i think NPH as Tobias is the best thing i've ever seen ever ;_;

  • god i love this musical! whoever doasnt should go get a shave.

  • *sighs* I love this...

    :)

  • the person who disliked this video has either no soul, no heart, no understanding of brilliance, or all of the above...

i absolutely love this play and i do not think that the movie did it justice....my lifelong goal is to play sweeney and portray it like George's not like johnny depp's (which seems to be the one people do a lot)

  • @pucas27 I want to play Mrs. Lovett someday. I'm sure you'll do a fantastic job if you're doing Hearn over Depp, thank God.

  • @youtubrgirl12345 well thank you im sure you make a great Lansbury Lovett :D

  • Gotta love it when he see's the little girl and pouts a bit

    XD

I can just hear his thoughts, "Damn it, he has a little girl." lol

And the mental woman aka his wife, cracks me up even more lol

    MISCHIEF!

  • i'm shocked that one person disliked this video. simply shocked.

  • still the film is much better singing

  • @DamePistols seriously?

  • @DamePistols well you gotta account for one being done live, the other in a modern studio

  • @DamePistols I'm going to do you a really big favor and pretend you didn't just say that >:( I mean, God knows I love Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, but neither one of them can hold a candle to George Hearn and Angela Lansbury.

  • brilliant!

  • This song is SPECTACULAR in every way!!! Probably the best peice in the entire play!!!!

  • Love this!!!!

  • George Hearn has the most beautiful voice.

  • the sailer guy is HOT ^_^

  • I love his face when he realizes he actually has to shave the guy. Classic!

  • I love how they didn't use a lot of blood in this. I mean, this movie isn't really meant to be a horror, in my opinion. It's not supposed to scare you. It's more like a drama/thriller or something of the lot. And this song is awesome :)

  • 197 people ate pies and 1 person got a shave from Sweeney.

  • George Hearn is really good as Sweeney Todd!

  • The juxtaposition of one of the most beautiful songs from the entire show with Sweeney dispatching one customer after another still sends chills up my spine.

  • And people wonder why I am OBSSESSED with this musical...

  • Why do so many people hate the woman cast as Lucy/The beggar woman in this version?

holy shit, she scares me! she is pretty perfect, in my opinion....

  • @AkanemaruNayuchi I totally agree, I think she nailed it. So far she's been my favourite portrayal of the Beggar Woman.

  • @AkanemaruNayuchi Spoilers much?

But I agree, she does a wonderful job!

  • I love this anthony and the one from the movie.........he was the only one i could stand in the film

  • I love how George Hearn says "Johanna...."

  • @darcimkire07 I melted...no, CREAMED when he sang that! lol

  • BEST SONG EVER! i NEED A CHAIR LIKE THAT.

  • @emorulzforever And what exactly do you need it for? ;)

  • @NearSupporter11226 no reason. (cough) kill my teacher. yep no reason

  • @emorulzforever I have a social studies teacher... *nudge nudge*

  • @NearSupporter11226 If he or she needs a haircut u know who to tell. :)

  • @emorulzforever Next Tuesday good?

  • I actually think that Johnny Depp's portrayal of Sweeney Todd is better

  • @MrEoghan1997 I respect your opinion but I think that Johnny Depp is not at all good for the role. He seems troubled, but he never really flips out like George Hearn does. In Epiphany, for example he just doesn't do a good job

  • @yellowstone169601845

I respect your opinion aswell but Johnny Depp seems more sad and he does flip out in Epiphany

  • love that this is sponsored by gillette

  • This song always makes me so emotional...particularly Sweeney's part.

  • I like Laura Michelle Kelly's portrayal of the begger woman and lucy barker better, she plays it crazier and she is also beautiful when she plays Lucy.

  • Best play ever compared to little shop of horrers

  • The one person who disliked this should be closed in Fogg's Asylum.

  • I wouldn't be able to stop applauding

  • why is it that only the crazy person actually knows what is going?

  • Geez, watching Anthony look for Johanna is like watching Blue's Clues. You know how whenever Steve is looking for a clue and you're like "turn around it's right behind you!"

  • @Karma21Girl lol XD

  • Ok, I just read that the women who played Johanna was actually married at the time of this production to the man who played Sweeney Todd, her father. Just found that a little odd.

  • @Karma21Girl It would be alot more odd if he was her father in real life, and they were a play where their charicters were married.

  • Love this song,I think the film to have too much blood!

  • I love Sweeney's disappointed look at 4:52 when he realises he has to actually shave the man xD

  • This is the song that convinced me to see the musical :)

  • who plays anthony i LOVE his voice

  • @JAMbannana cris groenendaal

  • This is my favorite song. Its just so complex. It give me the chill bumps every time i hear it/sing to it. And right @ 3:38 or so it looks like the red head in the chair is holding that long note! lol I JUST LOVE THIS MUSICAL SO MUCH!!!!

  • Eating people is fun when you sing and dance about it.

  • For some reason this is my favorite song out of the entire musical, and that's saying something. Mostly I'd go for songs like Kiss me or Epiphany, or the Worst Pies in London... But something about this just makes me continuously think about this song, even during school, and makes me sing it in private every chance I get. (I think I sound horrible. xp)

    Wonderful.~

  • I love how calmly Sweeny sings while he kills the man

  • rock on beggar woman 2:19

  • All pretty well, but I hate the beggars part...

  • Who disliked this? Are you a fucking plebe / serf / yokell / peasant?

  • @troiko Probably someone who's a loyal disciple to Johnny Depp and Tim Burton and thinks anything else is crap even though this is 5,000,000,000,000 times better and is the true way it's supposed to be

  • @quesoboy88 i actully like the movie AND the play personly, the play for me has some parts that i think are better then the movie, and the movie had parts that i liked better then the play, i'm a crazy tim burton/sweeney todd fan so i have to say that the movie and play are 50/50 for me :3

  • i know i sing when i kill people :D

  • This is probably my favorite song from the whole musical.

  • @brendonian me too, along with worst pies and a little priest

  • The complexity of this quartet is marvelous. Only 520 views? Only 2 likes? Please people, pay attention to this. This is real musical theater.

  • @Zeppolino100 When I posted this on my facebook everybody was like "are you crazy?" haha, they dont understand musical theaters or us, lovers of musicals xD

  • @Zeppolino100 Look how far this has come in 10 months :'3
