That dissonance with the notes a half-step apart at the end is incredible and the effect it produces is chilling. This is a beautiful and amazingly well-done scene.
I saw the original Broadway show with Lansbury and Len Cariou as well as the Bob Gunton version in the late 1980's. I haven't seen the movie and am not that anxious to because no one can do better than George Hearn. This is the one that has stayed with me and not only because it was the one they filmed. Hearn's voice is so magnificent I can still hear it after he is done with the song. Only Hearn can make you swoon as he sings while cutting peoples' throats, LOL!
@DanishNerdess I like your taste in entertainment. This is one of my favorite shows. The music is brilliant. Check out Neil Patrick Harris doing this. It's on youtube.
I saw the movie first and that how I was introduced to Sweeney Todd. Then a friend was kind enough to direct me to this stage performance and I have to say, in my honest opinion, while I did enjoy the movie, there's really no comparison. I think George Hearn is better than Johnny. I love Johnny, he's one of my all time favorite actors but George Hearn has a passion to his Sweeney I felt Johnny's was missing and listening to the two back to back, it really shows.
@Torijenova I'm so glad you found the original version! Nobody can do it like Hearn. Just watch him do "My Friends". Fantastic! "you shall drip rubies, you'll soon drip precious rubies" OMG it gives me chills.
Why so much hate on Depp ? He did a good job too. I love George Hearn as Sweeney He has an amazing voice. At the same time i also love Johnny. He has a beautiful and he did a very good job. Plus he makes a real sexy sweeney ;) :P
@musiclovergurl24 nothing can compare to the complexity of the actual performance of this, though. I've done this show, and it's hard. if you mess up you can't just cut the scene and re-film it. Depp isn't half as talented as George, and he'll never be the true Sweeney Todd.
@AllowMeToExaggerate Johnny Depp is a very talented actor, he is not a singer and yet he managed to sing the songs and be convincing as Sweeney. Not George nor Johnny will ever be the true Sweeney Todd because he was not a real man and in any case, who would like to be just like a killer? They are both good, both of them play the part differently, both act according to the medium and they are both a delight to watch.
the person who disliked this video has either no soul, no heart, no understanding of brilliance, or all of the above...
i absolutely love this play and i do not think that the movie did it justice....my lifelong goal is to play sweeney and portray it like George's not like johnny depp's (which seems to be the one people do a lot)
@DamePistols I'm going to do you a really big favor and pretend you didn't just say that >:( I mean, God knows I love Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, but neither one of them can hold a candle to George Hearn and Angela Lansbury.
@DamePistols you're kidding right? Helena Bonham Carter was straining to hit the notes a lot of the time, and Depp's voice is serviceable but not great.
I love how they didn't use a lot of blood in this. I mean, this movie isn't really meant to be a horror, in my opinion. It's not supposed to scare you. It's more like a drama/thriller or something of the lot. And this song is awesome :)
The juxtaposition of one of the most beautiful songs from the entire show with Sweeney dispatching one customer after another still sends chills up my spine.
@MrEoghan1997 I respect your opinion but I think that Johnny Depp is not at all good for the role. He seems troubled, but he never really flips out like George Hearn does. In Epiphany, for example he just doesn't do a good job
I like Laura Michelle Kelly's portrayal of the begger woman and lucy barker better, she plays it crazier and she is also beautiful when she plays Lucy.
Geez, watching Anthony look for Johanna is like watching Blue's Clues. You know how whenever Steve is looking for a clue and you're like "turn around it's right behind you!"
Ok, I just read that the women who played Johanna was actually married at the time of this production to the man who played Sweeney Todd, her father. Just found that a little odd.
This is my favorite song. Its just so complex. It give me the chill bumps every time i hear it/sing to it. And right @ 3:38 or so it looks like the red head in the chair is holding that long note! lol I JUST LOVE THIS MUSICAL SO MUCH!!!!
For some reason this is my favorite song out of the entire musical, and that's saying something. Mostly I'd go for songs like Kiss me or Epiphany, or the Worst Pies in London... But something about this just makes me continuously think about this song, even during school, and makes me sing it in private every chance I get. (I think I sound horrible. xp)
@troiko Probably someone who's a loyal disciple to Johnny Depp and Tim Burton and thinks anything else is crap even though this is 5,000,000,000,000 times better and is the true way it's supposed to be
@quesoboy88 i actully like the movie AND the play personly, the play for me has some parts that i think are better then the movie, and the movie had parts that i liked better then the play, i'm a crazy tim burton/sweeney todd fan so i have to say that the movie and play are 50/50 for me :3
