Bob, I like to buy myself a bag of wooden golf tees and keep them with my screws and nails that way I dont have to look for any scraps. I usually get a bag of 50 or 100 which lasts a long time. I have used long and short tees which gives me a couple different sizes, they seem to fit nice and tight.
@euphepticguy Two holes, with two, 2 and 1/2 inch long screws in them. Placed as to draw door jamb into framing members around door, behind casing and wall finish material( Drywall or Plaster) +++ Bob
@euphepticguy Take the bottom hinge off on the wall side only. Drill two holes thru door jamb behind hinge but not lining up with existing hinge screw holes. Drive 2 1/2 screws into holes and flush to wood. Re-install bottom hinge over screws you just put in and see if it did'nt draw door down slightly allowing clearance on top side of door. Hope this was clear enough and helped you out +++Bob
I use toothpicks dipped in a bit of wood glue, gang stuffed into the hole and trimed with a utility knife. Once the screw is in and the glue dries, it ain't never comin' out.
Thanks for this video. It guided me straight to what needed to be fixed.
What I found was that on the bottom hinge the screws had come loose, and one of them was protruding outward and had become bent, preventing the door from closing.
thanks for the help on my door crisis! lol.. I shimmed the hinge side out just slightly more than I needed and presto! no more spring ( yes I need to cut the top jamb on a bit of an angle - small price to pay hehe ) ...I been hangin doors for a few years now and always look to the hinge it self to find the problem, turns out one more tap on the shim solves the problem .. no more suffering at work!....thanks Bob :)
@HomeRemodelWorkshop That is the same way we fix problems in Hypnosis. Giving a person many options in stead of the one they hate to fix a problem often leads to a feeling of freedom, in that feeling of freedom solutions appear on their own more often than not...Glad to see the theory working in carpentry. Nice Video = )
there seems to be pressure on the hinge(s) ( no door stop nailed on yet) how can I get the spring out? also the door fits perfect - just springs and puts a pull type pressure on the hinge(s)
@actorguy6 I generally call that condition being "hinge bound" there are alot of things that can cause this. Hinge being mortise too deep/shallow. Jamb not set square with framing. Hinges not being set at same depth front to back. Hinge screws not being set flush allowing them to hit each other prior to closing or any combination of all of these. If using existing hing mortise some hinges are thicker than others. Its all in the small details when it comes to hanging a door.Small adjustments Bob
Going to try fix our bathroom door now, which is sticking at the top edge and probably because the door has a hook carrying the weight of family bathroom robes.
This video was great, thanks Bob, I have a more complex door problem (the previous owner didnt install them properly but this video helped me not damage the door further.
next time try bore the hole a bit and use chemical metal for cars by plastic padding , when its hardned its so hard u can drill it and cut threads in it , but just press the screws in while its soft, worcs a treat..
Not always. Most the time I have noticed that just normal use will loosen hinges. Sometimes when humidity changes happen and change of season can cause a door and jamb to swell enough to cause sticking. If there is cracking from top corner of door to ceiling or adjacent wall that could be a sign of foundation movement. Hope this helped +++Bob
i didnt know the wood in the hole trick, though i run into this alot sometimes if the door is real offset, you need to shim the bottom hinge i usually use a smokepack doubled over
This was really helpful! After spending 5 minutes to watch the video I fixed the problem in 2 minutes. Without it, I would have undoubtedly made one of the mistakes you described (and spent a lot of time doing the wrong thing!). Thanks and keep up the good work.
today is my day off and first thing i'm going to do is to fix the door that has same problem. let's see may be the whole problem is just to tighten those screws...
