for around 16oz of dye i'll use 8 tablespoons of black dye. dharma trading recommends you use 4x the amount of black. dyes will last a while, they'll lose their brightness after a while and will sorta "pastel" out, so use it fairly quickly for best results. i mix either quarts or pints of dye in glass jars, depending on how much of a certain color i use.
When mixing the black dye, do you mix it to the same thinness as the other colors, or thicker or thinner? Also, how many oz of dye do you use per bottle, and how long does said bottle last?
Hello Bill, I myself am from Baton Rouge and I was wondering if you maybe had these for sale and if so prices? Maybe shoot me a message or something, Thanks for posting!
im really getting into tie dying and REALLY liked this video.....is there anyway you could send me the directions to follow for making a simular shirt?
love, love, love this shirt, the colouring & design is amazing! What a great tutorial, thankyou so much for sharing AND.......... G'day from the land down under!
What a fantastic video! Thank you so much. (Nice to hear Allman Bros in the background btw.) I just ordered a kit from Dharma Trading and started digging around for some folding tips. Your video has gotten me even more excited for my first dye. You had a lot of different little techniques (that seem like they'll work much better) than what I've found out so far. Thanks for the inspiration!
I have always tie dyed without black, and i wanna try this cos i love this effect! But i don't get one thing-how u didn't get any white(non-dyed) parts? I mean, always when i dye, i get white areas where i folded and tied shirt. How do u do this, that u get your shirt all dyed, and u know-u have applied black over other colours, how it didn't cover it all making shirt whole black?
@rostine1980 He sounds nothing like Jim Ross, only some of the words, this guy talks more like he's chilling and slower and takes time, Jim Ross is more hyped and a much fast talker with a high pitch accent.
I let the shirt sit with the black dye on it for somewhere between half an hour and an hour then applied the soda ash fixer. This time can vary as you see fit, longer more black interaction with the other colors, shorter and less black interaction.
pastel, most of the dye washes out, the design remains, that happened this summer, i immediately recognized the problem, added soda ash and actually got a nice couple pastel shirts by accident. learned another trick.
I like that, niceeeeeeeeeee!

I actually use Tulip brand dye's, from Walmart, or any craft store, like Michael's. The colors are bright, and hold pretty well.
