Although I was only 13 When this was on, i quickly realized that having two leaders (generals) was the downfall of any structured organization (army).
@elliot18375 Pretty much, but this show was around before Rome Total War was released. The producers of the show paid the Creative Assembly to allow them to use a pre-released and modified version of RTW a year before it was released. BBC has laws against product advertisement in-shows (or at least, they did), so they couldn't just say that it was Rome Total War. But CA was in the credits. It was actually a pretty cool concept show.
there's a facebook group, BRING BACK TIME COMMANDERS, for all of us orphaned strategy enthusiasts who want this show back, join in and spread the word, lets bring this back to television
...They're making the novices be...the Carthaginians??? So Hannibal is regarded as one of the most eminent Generals in all time because of his genius at this battle...and they're asking the general public to re-create it??
If they brought back Time Commanders they could make so much money as total war would make some really good quality games, graphic and strategy whise.
@ThisNameWasntUs3d But it is state of the art technology, it was the best historical combat sim available. Was a there a better battle simulation? If not then it is state of the art, if there was it would also be a video game. :)
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but were people from the Iberian peninsula called Spanish at that time?"
The word "Spain" can be etymologically traced back to about 1000BC. Phoenician sailors called it the "isle of hyraxes" because they confused hares for hyraxes(which is a similar animal from North Africa.
The roots of the term "Iberian Peninsula" come from Greek writings only a couple decades after this battle.
I got out my book on Hannibal for this. Strange though, because it said "The Senate decided that the army should be raised to the unprecedented strength of eight legions to oppose Hannibal."
That would make the army roughly 36000 not the 86000 mentioned in the video?
@Kytuzian i know it's really confusing cos wherever you look it says eight legions and 85000 men like in that romes worst nightmare documentary. i can only assume that there were alot of auxilaries and that pre-marian legions were larger than the 4800 men that everyone means when they say legion
I remember this! Saw it when I was 10 or 11 years old and spent a few days that summer running down to the library to get books and VHS tapes about Carthage/Rome/Greece.
i personally think that annibal was bad commander lost 30000 and 200 elephants due to starvation and decease they didnt even had warm clothes it was disaster dont know how he won the war, i think it was mainly because of gaul mercenaries, elephants where so sick they could not even fight
is here all guys against a computer ki or two teams against each other cause. if that is the real game gfame with the advantages and disadvantages of every unit like in the game its totally not as in real were. like teutoburger forest. you can destroy with cavalry even in woods the germans skirmishers easy cause the territory have like no influence as it should have
What I most remember about this show is the absolute obsession with taking the high ground. Almost every week, the generals would do this - the one thing everyone picks up from war movies. And every week, the military experts looking on would facepalm, and say "OK, you've got the high ground...NOW WHAT?!! Why did you want it? What are you going to do with it?"
I miss this show, I wish it would come back. Surely one of the satellite channels would want it?
@tonydeafmessiah this show was made before Rome:total war was getting advertised they probably made this show to to advertise it more before it officially came out.
'Phalanxes at the flanks, throw the Gaelic infantry straight at the Romans' doesn't sound like that would be a good idea, at least from what I remember of RTW.
I think I've said this before, but Cannae isn't amongst the best simulations you can create for regular people if they do not know what really happened.
I loved this, it was one of the few tv programs I would make sure I'd watch. i liked how the modern military experts could adapt to ancient tactics when assessing the battle.
They should have expanded it, written their own software and included modern battles. Damn the BBC for cancelling the great shows they create.
I remember watching this, I absolutely loved it!:D
I'd love to see the BBC start it up again, they'd probably use Empire or Napoleon Total War at this point in time and choose appropriate historic battles:)

bloggsie619 8 months ago
@bloggsie619
You're partially correct: there were a lot of auxiliaries, but the premarian legion wasn't notably larger(4.8-6k)
8 legions worth of roman infantry + 5k cavalry(300x8=2.4k equites + barbarian auxiliaries) and 40k auxilia(italic tribes + the remaining loyal cisalpine gallic villages) = 85k
